     Also called John Rockett Often this name is Rockwood.5 John Rockwood of Mendon was born on 1 December 1641 at 10th mo., Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.2,6,7 He was the son of Richard Rockwood of Braintree and Agnes Lovell.1,2,3,4 John Rockwood of Mendon married Johanna Ford, daughter of William Ford of Marshfield and Anne Eames, on 15 July 1662 at 7th mo., Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts; Married by Peter Brackett.1,8 John Rockwood of Mendon was one of a committee of three to fix the bounds between Mendon and Dedham on 18 March 1669 at Massachusetts.9 He was one of a committee to settle Reverend Joseph Emerson as first minister of Mendon on 1 December 1669 at Massachusetts.9 He lost his son, John Jr., when the fomerly friendly Nipmuk Indians attacked on 14 July 1675 at Mendon, Massachusetts.10 He relocated to Medfield, Massachusetts, after 14 July 1675; left Mendon with his family and sought refuge eastwards.5 He was one of a committee "to view the streams and to pitch on a place for a corn mill" at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.11 He was one of a committee to build the third meeting house--thirty feet square and sixteen foot posts at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.11 He was one of twenty-five in favor of prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.11 He after returning to Mendon following King Philip's War he, as well as Robert Taft (ancestor of President Taft) and seventeen others petitioned the General Court for relief from taxation on account of heavy losses by the war.9 He was a constable, surveyor of highways, and fence viewer at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.9 He and Johanna Ford were the ancestor of U.S. President Garfield.12 John Rockwood of Mendon appears for the last time in the records with his name as drawing lots with twenty-four others in 1707 at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.11 He married Rebecca (?) before 1724; His 2nd.13 John Rockwood of Mendon was a witness where Isaac Thayer of Mendon bequeathed "one shilling because of legacy I gave to his children" by his father-in-law, John Rockwood, on 8 June 1724.14 John Rockwood of Mendon left a will on 8 June 1724; “To wife Rebekah 1/3. Balance to Grandchildren, viz: to children of son Joseph deceased, and Priscilla, daughter of John Corbit, and Hannah Brown daughter of John Darling and Mercy Thompson wife of David together with Mary Holbrook wife of Joseph and her sister Ann Cook my granddaughters. Son in law John Darling 1 shilling and no more because of legacy I gave to his daughter Hannah Brown. Son in law Nicholas Cook 1 shilling. Son in law Isaac Thayer one shilling because of legacy I gave to his children. Son in law Jonathan Heyward 1 shilling because I gave £10 to his children he had by his first wife. "From the foregoing, I infer that the list before the word "finis" was made by Josiah Chapin himself, from time to time. I seem to detect the marks of age in the form of the last few entries made by him. It is quite a curiosity to me. They shew to me that the old gentleman was a painstaking, sensible man." His 3rd wife's, Mehitable's, death was one of those last recorded entries.5

     Anthony Jansen Westerbrook lived at Beverwyck, New Netherlands; His house and lot was on the south side of State street east of Broadway.2 He was an innkeeper at Beverwyck, New Netherlands.2 Also called Anthony Jansen The name by which he is generally designated on the Flatbush records.1 He was born circa 1625 at Westbroek, Utrecht Province, Netherlands.3 He married Ursula Dyrcks in 1658 at Flatbush, Kings County, New York.3 Anthony Jansen Westerbrook bought, of Tielman Van Vleeck and Claes Gangeloff Villet, orphanmaster of New Amsterdam, in charge of the estate of Nicholas Volthuysen, a parcel of land in Flatbush on the East side of the road, cong. 18 morgens, with plain and meadow land abutting on Canarisie flats or plains, with 2 small house-plots, on 27 October 1661 at Flatbush, New Netherlands.4 He was court messenger of the colony in 1662 at Rensselaerswyck, New Netherlands.2 He conveyed his Flatbush land to Wil and Thomas Willets on 20 March 1670.1 He died in 1725 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York.3

Judith Jorise Rapalje married Pieter Pietersen Van Nest, son of Pieter Van Nest, in 1652 at Kings County, New York. Judith Jorise Rapalje accompanied Pieter Van Nest when Pieter relocated in 1683 and came to reside in Somerset County, New Jersey; The original patent to Peter Van Nest, (son of Pieter), the first of the family to settle in New Jersey, and indeed the first european settlers in the area, consisted of a large tract of land along the north branch of the Raritan River, in what was then East Jersey, situated between the villages of North Branch and Somerville. In time this estate was partitioned off among his heirs. The homestead was replaced some years ago by a building used at the present time as the Community Home for the Poor and Aged.1,2

In 1698, Judith Jorise Rapalje appeared on the census at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, Details provided: Appears as head-of-household.

She witnessed the baptism of Maryrieton Van Neste on 20 April 1704 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Raritan (Somerville), Somerset County, New Jersey; "Van Neste, Hironimus and wife--Maryrieton. Witness/es: Jacob Sebrege, Judit Van Neste (gmother)."3 Judith Jorise Rapalje died on 21 May 1726 at Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 90 years, 10 months and 16 days.

I, John Thompson, Sr. of the town of Mendon. being sensible of my own bodily weakness and infirmities, the manifest alarms of my hastening and approaching dissolution, acknowledge with all the humble thankfullness divine goodness, affording such an opportunity whilst blest with disposing mind to set my house in order before my Earthly Tabernacle is dissolved, do make and constitute this my last last Will and Testament.

Josiah Chapin Sr. was was Representative in 1689 at Mendon, Massachusetts.4 He was a grantee of land by the indians, John & Amos Awasamog, heirs of John Awasamog on 19 February 1691/92 at Mendon, Massachusetts.22 He married Mehitable Metcalf of Dedham on 22 June 1713; His 3rd. s.p.7,12,10,15 Josiah Chapin Sr. witnessed the death of Mehitable Metcalf of Dedham on 2 December 1724; "From the foregoing, I infer that the list before the word "finis" was made by Josiah Chapin himself, from time to time. I seem to detect the marks of age in the form of the last few entries made by him. It is quite a curiosity to me. They shew to me that the old gentleman was a painstaking, sensible man." His 3rd wife's, Mehitable's, death was one of those last recorded entries.23 Josiah Chapin Sr. resided in Weymouth, Braintree, and Mendon before 1726.2 He died on 10 September 1726 at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, at age 88 years, 10 months and 12 days. He served in the New York militia, as a lieutenant of the foot company of New Utrecht in 1700.6,3 He witnessed (or was recognized by) the probate of the estate of Guert Coerton after 17 August 1701 at Bergen, New Jersey; Guertje Harmens, wife of Hendrick Matthyse Smock, is mentioned as "his brothers daughter" and Matthyse Hendricksen Smack as the oldest son of Guertje Harmens.4 Matthias Hendrickse Smock married Elizabeth Stevens Coninck, daughter of Jan Stevenszen Coninck and Elizabeth Lucas, on 12 September 1701 at the Dutch Church, New York City, New York County, New York; Her 2nd (widow).7,3 Matthias Hendrickse Smock witnessed the baptism of Elizabeth Smock on 26 March 1704 at the Dutch Reformed Church, New York City, New York.8 Matthias Hendrickse Smock sold his New Utrecht farm of 48 acres and removed to Piscataway in 1718 at Middlesex County, New Jersey.3 He and Elizabeth Stevens Coninck relocated to Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, in 1718. Matthias Hendrickse Smock lived after 1721 at Piscataway, Somerset County, New Jersey; His house on River Road in Piscataway, built prior to 1721, was still occupied as late as 1936.3 He left a will on 2 October 1721; His will mentions sons Hendrick, John, Lucas, Matthias, and Jacobus, and daughters Elizabeth, Gertrude, and Mary. His wife, Elizabeth, is named as the sole executrix. Witnesses to the will were Samuel Conners, Leedert "Smack" and John Cholwell.3 He died in March 1727 at Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.9 His estate was probated on 30 May 1727 at Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.10,3

Thomas Eves was a signer of the Concessions and Agreements of West New Jersey on 3 March 1676. He emigrated from London, England, leaving circa July 1677; Departed for the New World aboard the "Kent". He may have come with a sister, Dorothy, who then married William Heulings.4,5 He immigrated to New Jersey arriving September 1677.6,7 He married Anna (?) circa 1678 at Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey; His 1st.1 Thomas Eves was among the signers of the first marriage certificate on 8 August 1678 at Burlington Monthly Meeting, Burlington County, New Jersey.8 He lived circa 1685 at east of Marlton, Vale of Evesham, New Jersey.9 He was a witness where John Hollinshead Jr. killed a turkey and a deer, providing valuable food for two families circa 1686.10 Thomas Eves and Mary Roberts obtained a marriage license on 4 December 1699 at Burlington Monthly Meeting, Burlington County, New Jersey; Given certificate to marry. Pieter Van Nest relocated to Somerset County, New Jersey, in 1683; The original patent to Peter Van Nest, (son of Pieter), the first of the family to settle in New Jersey, and indeed the first european settlers in the area, consisted of a large tract of land along the north branch of the Raritan River, in what was then East Jersey, situated between the villages of North Branch and Somerville. In time this estate was partitioned off among his heirs. The homestead was replaced some years ago by a building used at the present time as the Community Home for the Poor and Aged.1,2 He married Margaret Croisson on 13 April 1684. Pieter Van Nest married Tryntje Janse before 1701. Pieter Van Nest witnessed the baptism of Judith Van Neste on 1 August 1711 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Raritan (Somerville), Somerset County, New Jersey; "Van Neste, Joris and wife--Judith. Witness/es: Piter Van Neste (uncle); Jacob Jan Middagh."3 Pieter Van Nest died in 1728 at Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 74 years.
