John Reeder Sr.

b. 1618, d. before 9 March 1659/60
John Reeder was a Dutch-Englishman, his family having immigrated to Protestant England (Kent County) from Holland when it was invaded by Spain. The earliest Reeder wills in the Canterbury Courts show that the Reeder family first settled on the southern branch of the Thames River estuary at Sittingbourne, Kent County (which village was north of the Pilgrim's Path to Canterbury.) From Sittingbourne, the younger generations of Reeder gradually spread south and east to Canterbury, where Thomas Reeder was an Alderman, and finally down to Dover and Folkestone.1 John Reeder is a qualifying founder for the Founders of New Haven Colony.2 John Reeder Sr. was born in 1618 at Kent, England.1 He emigrated from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, England, leaving 8 April 1630; Departed England on Winthrop's flagship, the Arabella. In the passenger list he is referred to as "... Reeder."1 He immigrated to Salem/Boston, Massachusetts Bay Commonwealth, arriving 13 June 1630; He was a young passenger on the "Arbella", flagship of Governor Winthrop's 1630 fleet to Boston. He was a schoolboy and was addressed as "Reeder" by Winthrop's personal list of 76 passengers aboard the ship.1 He was taken, after the first dreadful winter in Massachusetts (Cambridge) during which so many of the passengers died, into the household of William Pynchon (another on the first five of Winthrop's 1630 fleet), who was sent by Winthrop to found Roxburg (today part of Boston) on the other side of the Charles River, in 1632.1 He accompanied Pynchon and his company, and moved to the Indian town Agawam on the Connecticut River, where the company founded "Springfield" across the river in 1636.1 He relocated to Massachusetts in 1636.3 He received his first grant of land from Massachusetts Bay Colony, being now eighteen years old, ten acres of land bounded by neighbor John Cabell, in 1636 at Springfield.1 He immigrated to Kent, England, arriving 1637; He sold his 10 acres and returned to England on Captain Henry Smith's ship (Smith was the son-in-law of William Pynchon). There he visited relatives in Kent County, but decided to return to America again.1 He emigrated from London, England, leaving circa April 1637; "In Nov. of 1633, [John] Davenport fled to Amsterdam to escape increasing disapproval of the Crown where the group organized their move to the New World. The group included: John and Elizabeth Davenport (left infant son in care of noble lady); Theophilus Eaton, Anne Eaton, dau. of George Lloyd, Bishop of Chester, and widow of Thomas Yale, the second wife of Theophilus Eaton; old Mrs. Eaton, his mother; Samuel and Nathaniel Eaton, his brothers; Mary Eaton, the dau. of his first wife; Samuel, Theophilus and Hannah, the children of his second wife; Anne, David and Thomas Yale, the children of Anne Eaton by her former marriage; Edward Hopkins, who on Sep. 5, 1631 had married Anne Yale at St. Antholin's in London; and Richard Malbon, a kinsman of Theophilus Eaton. The group chartered the "Hector" of London. On June 26, 1637, John Winthrop recorded the arrival of the group from London at Boston."4

He immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Commonwealth, arriving 26 June 1637; He returned to America aboard the "Hector", accompanied by William Tharp/Thorp and his daughter Hannah, who became his first wife. On June 26, 1637, John Winthrop recorded the arrival of the group from London at Boston. He settled then in Hartford.1,4 He married Hannah Thorpe, daughter of William Thorpe and Garthered Blithe, circa 1639 at New Haven, Connecticut; His 1st.5,1 John Reeder Sr. relocated to New Haven, Connecticut, before 4 June 1639; He and his father-in-law moved to Connecticut, because William Pynchon had moved there as the first magistrate, where Reeder opened and maintained an inn on the river (Reeder's lot was #10 in the village).1,2 He one of the free planters who assented to the Fundamental Agreement of the Colony on 4 June 1639 at New Haven Colony, Connecticut.2 He was not a Puritan, but a "Separatist" rather (much like the Plymouth Pilgrims).1 He lived in 1641 at New Haven, Connecticut; John Reeder is described as a resident of New Haven, but not within the "Nine Squares" of the town. His father-in-law, William Thorpe, is found within one the the nine.6 He lived between 1643 and 1650 at Connecticut.3 He witnessed the death of William Thorpe circa 1650 at New Haven, Connecticut; He died at his son-in-law, John Reeder's Inn and home.1 John Reeder Sr. witnessed the death of Hannah Thorpe between 1650 and 1652 at Stratford, Connecticut.1 John Reeder Sr. relocated to Stratford, Connecticut, circa 1651; After his father-in-law's death, he and his wife Hannah and their children moved to Stratford, Connecticut at the mouth of Housatonic River and Long Island Sound. (Stratford is now the river port of Bridgeport, Connecticut on Route #1.).1 He was operator of a trading post and inn in 1651 at Stratford, Connecticut.1 He relocated to Middleburgh (now Newton), Queens County, New York, in 1652.3 He left his children with friends at Stratford and moved across the Sound to Long Island, where Henry Feake of Massachusetts and his company of 12 men were building a new town named "Middleburgh" in 1652 at Long Island, New York.1 He married Margaret Isackes in 1652 at Middleborough, Long Island, Queens County, New York; His 2nd or a different John Reeder? One of Connecticut, another of New York? This too explains why mother is variously Hannah Thorpe, Margaret Thorpe, and also Margaret Isackes.7 John Reeder Sr. died before 9 March 1659/60 at Newton, Queens County, New York.

Isaac Morrill of Hatfield Broadoak1

b. 1588, d. 18 December 1661
Isaac Morrill of Hatfield Broadoak was born in 1588 at England.2 He immigrated to New England arriving 1632; He came to the New World aboard the Lyon.3 His English roots are still a matter of debate which Anderson deals with quite nicely: "Banks gives the origin of Isaac and Abraham Morrill as Hatfield Broadoak, Essex, without evidence. The presence of Isaac Morrill on the Lyon, and his settlement in Roxbury along with others of the Nazeing community, makes this a likely neighborhood, however."3 He served on the Suffolk grand jury on 19 September 1637.3 He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638 at Boston, Massachusetts.1 He was a Blacksmith. His inventory includes "two forges". His blacksmith tools were bequeathed to his "cousin" Isaac Morrell.3 He left a will; Isaac's will was dated 15 December 1661 and proved on 23 January 1661/2. In it, he bequeathed to "my dear & loving wife" the use of his entire estate during her life. After she died, £40 was to be distributed equally between "my four grandchildren to wit John Smith, Isaac Smith, Francis Smith and Abraham Smith". To "my grandchild Mary Smith ... my farm lying between Reading and Andover being more than two hundred acres". The residue was to go to "my two sons (to wit) John Smith & Daniell Brewer & to my grandchild Sarah Davis" (with some additional household goods for her). What I have given to "John Smith and his wife Katherine if she outlive him" was to be enjoyed by them during their lifetimes and then equally to their now children and any future children John Smith will have "by my daughter Katherine" to be carefully used so that the children are not "embesselled" or disappointed. If "my loving wife" as a result of sickness or poverty requires the sale of any property for her comfortable supply, it may be sold. He named his "loving sons Tobias Davis & Daniel Brewer" as executors; and "loving friends Thomas Weld & Edward Denison" overseers. Witnesses to the will were Samuel Danforth and Elisha Cooke.3 He died on 18 December 1661 at Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, at age 73 years. He died at age 74.1,4 Isaac Morrill of Hatfield Broadoak was buried in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. His epitaph read "Isaac Morell, an aged brother".3

Rachel Vigne was baptized on 16 March 1623 at the Leiden Walloon Church, Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands; Translation from French: "Baptized 16 March 1623 [n.s.], Rachel daughter of Guillain Vigne'. Witnesses Henri Lambert, Pierre de Fuche, and Marguerite Vigne'."1 She was the daughter of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville. Rachel Vigne accompanied the immigration of Ghislain Vigne in April 1624 to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; The Vignes are believed to have sailed from Holland in April of 1624 on the "Nieuw Nederlandt". Some of the other colonists, including Joris Janszen Rapaelje, were also from Valenciennes. The Vignes had three daughters, Christine, Maria and Rachel, when they sailed to America. Most of the 30 families must have had children, as the total number of new colonists was about 120. Upon reaching the Hudson River in mid-May, they found a French ship that was trying to claim the territory for the king of France. With the help of a smaller Dutch ship that arrived from the West Indies, they politely aimed their cannons and escorted the French ship out to sea. Cornelis May, captain of the "Nieuw Nederlandt," became the first Director of the New Netherlands colony.1 Rachel Vigne witnessed the marriage of Jans Janszen Damen and Adrienne Cuville in 1632 at New York.2,3,4 Her married name was Van Tienhoven. Rachel Vigne married Cornelis Van Tienhoven in 1639 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York. Rachel Vigne died in 1663 at age 39 years.

Jane Russhe was Notes for Jane Russhe: In her will, Jane's last name is spelled 'Russhe,' as is her father Thomas in his will.
The following narrative is taken from A.R. Rush's 'Benjamin Rush, M.D. 1745-1813: His Origins and Ancestors,' p.27. The entire text was sent to me from Craig Scott, Maidenhead, England on January 23, 1998:
'However, it was the discovery of the two wills - one by 'Jane Russhe, ' sister to John and Thomas of Boreham, and the other by 'Hugh Massey, ' the stepfather of Thomas and John - that positive proof could be claimed and established...concerning whether or not John Rush was identical with Captain John Rush who was thought to have been the 2nd son of Thomas Rush and Thomasine of Boreham...'
'John's sister Jane could hardly have seen much of her younger brother from the time when he joined the Parliament Army, separated as they were by a distance which would have been deemed considerable in those times. The fact too that John, who had been baptized into the Established (Episcopal) Church of England, had changed his religion to that of Quaker may very well have given rise to family friction. Evidently Jane felt something more than a passing regard for her nephews James and Thomas. Being unmarried herself and having no children of her own, it would be natural for a maiden aunt to think of her brother's children who, whatever may have been the case in respect of their father, were innocent of any religious stigma themselves. Obviously the blood tie proved strong. Thomas, her elder brother, inherited the residue of her estate, and so Jane's dispositions seem fair enough; if because of family or other pressures she felt inhibited from leaving a legacy to her younger brother John, there was no good reason why her nephews should not be remembered in her will.'
The following information came from Craig Scott, Maidenhead, England in an e-mail message sent to me on February 12, 1998 and explains possible holes in A.R. Rush's research:
'...The flaw concerns Jane Rush's will referred to by both (A.R.) Rush and (Rev.) Smith. It is dated April 20, 1664; she was buried on the 26th and the will proved on the 28th. But - if James, son of John Rush of Hornton is indeed her beloved nephew, it would be a strange bequest indeed: he was born some three months later on July 21.'
(Editor's note: It is entirely possible, and highly probable, that the nephew James was alive and that his birthdate was incorrectly recorded in the parish registers that existed at the time. Luther Olson from Lyndhurst, Ohio, has pointed out to me that the Church of England could have been using only 'baptism dates' that had served as official birthdates as the Quakers at that time in England did not have baptisms. Michelle Hayes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania correctly states that since infant mortality was high in that era, it was possible that caution was used and baptisms were sometimes deferred a few months after birth. And lastly, in the original will record, there were two female witnesses present during the drafting of Jane Rush's will. It can be speculated that this kind of oversight concerning a nephew 'who didn't exist' who was to receive a five pound inheritence could never have happened in a legal document with accountable witnesses present.)
More About Jane Russhe: Fact 1: 1664, Mentions two of her nephews in her will. Fact 2: October 04, 1621, Was baptised at the 'Old Rectory' parish in Boreham, England. Fact 3: Died unmarried.. She was born before 4 October 1621 at Boreham, Essex, England. She was christened on 4 October 1621 at Boreham, Essex, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Rush and Thomasine Stansted. Jane Russhe died in 1664 at Boreham, Essex, England.

Joris Jansen Rapalje of Valenciennes1

b. 28 April 1604, d. 1665
Based upon a report by a French researcher in 1960 (Hugh Law), it seems apparent that Joris was baptised as Georges Raparellet on April 28, 1604 in the Church of St. Nicholas at Valciennes as the natural son of Jean Rapareillet. The mother's name is not listed. Baptism of a Protestant child in a Catholic Church was not unusual at that time.2 Joris Jansen Rapalje of Valenciennes was son of Abram Janssen.3 He was a descendant of Gaspard Colet de Rapella, of the "celebrated" Coligny
family of France.4 Researchers emphasize that earlier accounts of the Rapalje ancestry are unreliable. It should also be noted that the form "de Rapalje" which appears in a few New York records is not found in any European documents of the family.5 He was baptized on 28 April 1604 at the St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Valenciennes, Hainault, Walslant, Spanish Netherlands.2 He immigrated to Albany, New York, arriving 1623; fled persecution in France, leaving from Rochelle on the Unity and arriving in the New World and settling in Albany, New Netherlands.6 He and Catalyntje Jeronomus Trico of Pry were the only names of the Walloon or French colonists brought over by New Netherlands that have been known hitherto in 1623.7 The marriage-intention registry reads, with abbreviations and deletions, in both Dutch and English: "Joris Raparlie van Valenchie..../boratwercker out 19 jaeren woon...op't Waele/padt and Catharina triko van [word parijs crossed out] pris in/[word Vranckrijck crossed out] Walslant geasst...met mary FlaThe marriage-intention registry reads, with abbreviations and deletions, in both Dutch and English: "Joris Raparlie van Valenchie..../boratwercker out 19 jaeren woon...op't Waele/padt and Catharina triko van [word parijs crossed out] pris in/[word Vranckrijck crossed out] Walslant geasst...met mary Fla[m]egh/haar suster woon...in de Vles out 18 yae.... "George de Rapalie bought the farm that long remained in the possession of his descendants, on a bay opposite to Corlear's Hook, which became known as the Waal-bocht, or Wallabout."8 He was was one of twelve men who represented the Dutch interests on 29 August 1641 at New Netherlands.6 He and Catalyntje Jeronomus Trico of Pry were witnessed a baptism on 20 January 1647 at the Dutch Reformed Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.9 Joris Jansen Rapalje of Valenciennes lived between 13 May 1647 and 1654 at Nos. 17 & 19 Pearl Street, New Amsterdam, New Netherlands; According to records of the Burgomeisters of New Amsterdam, Joris and Catalina resided in a house on Pearl Street (in NYC) which was confirmed to him by deed on 13 May 1647. He and Catalina lived in the house and operated a tavern there untiul 1654.2 He was elected magistrate between 1655 and 1657 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.6 He was again elected magistrate in 1660 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.6 He was again elected, his 5th time, as magistrate in 1662 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.6 He died on 21 February 1663 at age 58 years, 9 months and 24 days.2 He died in 1665 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, at age 60 years.6

A progenitor of a numerous offspring, by some said to be a distinct race from Richard, but it is not positively known as to the facts. Both families settled in the same town (Braintree, Mass.) about the same time, as the records show that the marriages of their children were recorded very near together; and as many intermarriages have taken place, it would make them relatives.5 Thomas Tayer of Braintree may have been the brother of Richard Thayer who settled in Braintree, MA about 1640.6 He was the progenitor of the largest of the three branches of the Thayer Family at America.7 He was born at Thornbury, England.1 He was baptized on 16 August 1596 at St. Mary's, Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England; Godfathers: Thomas Gibbs, William Dimery.3,4,8 He was the son of Richard Tayer of Thornbury and Ursula Dimery.3,4 Thomas Tayer of Braintree married Margery Wheeler, daughter of Abel Wheeler and Jane Shepherd, on 13 April 1618 at St. Mary's, Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England.3,4,1,9,10,11,12,13 Thomas Tayer of Braintree witnessed the will of Jane Shepherd on 30 March 1629 at Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England; "To son Giles Wheller various goods that are in his possession.
