He was sometimes referred to in records "Jan the soldier".7,8 He emigrated from Zuid Holland, Netherlands, leaving 1648; emigrated.9 He witnessed the will of Jans Janszen Damen on 12 December 1649 at Manhatten Island, New Netherlands; "Will, written in Dutch of which the following is an abstract of the translation thereof: DAMEN, JAN JANSEN, of Manhatten Island, mentions: Wife ___? [not named]; son of deceased sister, Hendrickie Jans, now living with the testator and called Jan Cornelissen Buys alias Jan Damen; brothers [i.e. brothers of the testator] Cornelis Jansen Cuyper, Cornelis Jansen Damen, and Willem Jansen Damen; sister [i.e. sister of the testator] Neltie Jans Damen; the poor of Bunick in the Diocese of Utrecht."10,11,7,12 Jan Cornelise Buys married Ida Lubbertse, daughter of Lubbert Gysbertszen and Divertje Cornelis, circa 1651 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; His 1st.8 Jan Cornelise Buys granted a patent for 25 morgens of land across the North River, between Gemoenepoe and Kil van Kol (New Jersey), in 1654 at Bergen, New Jersey.13 He was granted the Small Burgher Right: "Jan Cornelissen Buys has asked for and received the Small Burgher Right, has taken the oath as Burgher, and has paid the fees to the Treasurer" on 14 April 1657 at New Amsterdam, Long Island, New Netherlands.14 He purchased a lot from Egbert Sanders, husband of Harmentje Harmens, in 1661 at Flatbush, Long Island, New Netherlands.15 He obtained a patent from Governor Stuyvesant for 28 morgens of land in Flatbush lying between the farm of Cors Jans Boomgart and that of Adriaen Hegeman, and also for plain-land and salt meadow, in 1662 at Flatbush, Long Island, New Netherlands.12,16 He married Phebe Sales, daughter of John Sales and Phillipe Soales, on 24 August 1663 at Middelwout, Kings County, New York; His 2nd (widower). "Jan Corneliszen Buys, widower of Ybe Lubberts was married to Femmetje Jans, widow of Teunis Nysse married at Middelwoud with letters from Breuckelen."17,18,7,19,20 Jan Cornelise Buys filed a declaration forgiving Cornelis Jansen [Vanderveer] for the accident in which he lost his son Lubbert on 29 November 1663 at Flatbush, Kings County, New York.1,21,7,22 He married Willemtje Thyssen between 13 December 1666 and 14 January 1674; His 3rd (widower). Her 2nd (widow).23,7,24 Jan Cornelise Buys declared, in the presence of the overseers - Adriaen Ryerse and Derick Jansen - that Femmetjen Jans, deceased, had the following surving children (obviously only those who were minors still) by Teunis Niessen, deceased: who are by name: Eelsyen Teunes, Femmetien, Jan, Denis, and Cornelis Teunesen, over whom were installed as guardians Adriaen Ryerse and Derck Janszen, and Jan then and there gave assurance that each of the named children's rights should be guaranteed to the satisfaction of the overseers named on 8 June 1667.23,7,25 He signed a deposition, age 38, regarding property on 27 August 1667 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
