     "The strongest contender for the Deacon now appears to be the son of John Wright Esq. and sub-clerk of the House of Commons (first appointed Nov. 17, 1612)."² "... the parentage of Deacon Samuel Wright has been the subject of debate for nearly one hundred years. I have recently proven that it was not Nathaniel and Lydia's eldest son, Samuel, who was the Deacon."² Deacon Samuel Wright of Springfield was nephew of Nathaniel and Lydia Wright.² He held various public offices; was on the committee of the town to petition the general court; measurer of land; one of the owners of the first mill; subscribed to the fund for Harvard College and was withal an active and useful citizen.³ He was tentatively placed as the son of John and Martha (Castell) Wright.² He was active in the settlement of Springfield and Northampton at Massachusetts, America.⁴ He was son of John Wright, was born, probably at Kelvedon.³ He was baptized on 30 June 1606 at parish church, South Weald, Essex, England.² He was the son of John Wright Esq. and Martha Castell.² Deacon Samuel Wright of Springfield probably attended Emmanuel College in 1624 at Cambridge University, Cambridge, England.² He married Margaret (?) in 1625/26 at Essex, England.^5,1,6 Deacon Samuel Wright of Springfield immigrated to America arriving 1638.⁴ He served on a jury on 12 December 1639 at Springfield, Massachusetts.³ He said to have arrived in January 1641/42 at Springfield, Massachusetts.⁷ He was employed to "dispense the word of God in this place" and his salary fixed at fifty shillings a month" after Reverend Moxon departed in 1652.^3,7 He was one of the first settlers of Northampton in 1656/57.³ He left a will on 10 November 1663; Bequeathed to wife Margaret; sons, James, Judah and Samuel; daughters, Mary, Margaret, Esther and Lydia.⁸ He died on 17 October 1665 at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, at age 59 years, 3 months and 17 days.      Anne von Habsburg was born in 1601.¹ She was the daughter of König von Spanien Philip III von Habsburg and Margaret von Habsburg.¹ Anne von Habsburg married roi de France Louis XIII "Le Juste" de Bourbon, son of Henri IV, roi de France and Marie de Médicis, in 1615.^2,1 Anne von Habsburg died in 1666 at age 65 years.¹

     Sarah, Goodwife Whipple was born circa 1624 at England.¹ She married Captain John Whipple before 1640 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.¹ Sarah, Goodwife Whipple was admitted, as "Goodwife Whipple", to the second Dorchester church on 29 October 1641.¹ She died in 1666 at Providence, Rhode Island.¹ Sarah, Goodwife Whipple was buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.¹

     Jan Hendrickszen Selyns was baptized on 12 April 1592 at the Reformed Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.¹ He was the son of Hendrick Janszen Selyns and Susanna Verclocken. Marriage banns for Jan Hendrickszen Selyns and Janneke de Marees were published on 13 December 1617 at the Reformed Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands; His 1st. "Jan Selijnsz, aged 25 years, having no parents, residing on the Rokin, and Janneke de Marez, aged 20 years, assisted by Janneke d'Hurter, her mother, residing at Oudenzijdsvoorburgwal."¹ Jan Hendrickszen Selyns was held office between 1624 and 1663 at the Reformed Church, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands. Phebe Sales was baptized on 1 May 1626 at Little Waldingfield, Devonshire, England.¹ She was the daughter of John Sales and Phillipe Soales.² Phebe Sales lived between 1630 and 1638 at Charlestown, Massachusettes. She accompanied the immigration of John Sales circa July 1630 to Salem, Massachusetts; He arrived with the Winthrop Fleet of 1630, sailing with his wife, and daughter Phoebe. Of Lavenham, Suffolk, settling in Charlestown.¹ Phebe Sales was bound to Mr. Cogshall for fourteen years after her father's conviction in 1633 at Charlestown, Massachusettes. She was bound for a time to John Levins between 1636 and 1640 at Roxbury, Massachusettes. She was released from service by Mr. Cogshall as "said girle hath proved over burthensome to him" in 1637 at Charlestown, Massachusettes.      Ann Sarah Booth was born circa 1598 at Wherewell, Hampshire, England.¹ She married John Osgood, son of Christopher Osgood and Elizabeth Brockwell, on 1 June 1627 at Wherewell, Hampshire, England.¹ Ann Sarah Booth emigrated from Southampton, England, leaving 24 April 1638; She sailed on the Confidence. Sarah Osgood, of Horrell [Wherwell] Hants, spinster, settled Newbury, accompanied by: Sarah Osgood, 9; John Osgood, 7; Mary Osgood, 5; Elizabeth Osgood, 3; William Osgood and William Jones, children under 1; servant: Margery Parke.² She died on 8 April 1667 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.¹

     Hendrick Jansen Koch was baptized on 21 November 1604 at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands.¹ He was the son of Jan Henricks Koch and Urselken Van Hersberghe. Hendrick Jansen Koch witnessed the baptism of Sara Webber on 23 October 1640 at the Nieuw Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands; "Parents, Wolfert Webber, de jonge, Anna Walles; witnesses, Henrick Jansz. Kock."² Hendrick Jansen Koch died on 7 May 1667 at age 62 years, 5 months and 16 days.

     Shem Chapin was born on 11 May 1667 at Braintree, Massachusetts.² He was the son of Josiah Chapin Sr. and Mary King.¹ Shem Chapin died on 6 June 1667 at 4th month, Braintree, Massachusetts, at age 26 days.^1,3

     Albrecht, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbach was born on 16 September 1620 at Ansbach.¹ He was the son of Joachim Ernst, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbac.¹ Albrecht, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbach died on 22 October 1667 at Ansbach at age 47 years, 1 month and 6 days.¹

     Hendrick Janse Buys was baptized on 15 March 1654 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; "Son of Jan Cornelis Buys. Sponsers: Jan Gerritszen, Gysbert Lubbertszen, Marritie _?_."^1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Jan Cornelise Buys and Ida Lubbertse. Hendrick Janse Buys died before 24 April 1668. No mention is made of Hendrick in the declaration of his father on this date. He may also the child for whose grave his father Jan Cornelis Buys paid for in 1699.⁶

     Henry Chapin was born circa 1645 at Springfield, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of Deacon Samuel Chapin of Springfield and Cecily Penny.¹ Henry Chapin died on 29 April 1668.¹ He died on 15 August 1718.²

     Deborah Chapin 1st was born on 16 June 1664 at 4th month, Braintree, Massachusetts.^2,3 She was the daughter of Josiah Chapin Sr. and Mary King.¹ Deborah Chapin 1st died on 17 August 1668 at 6th month, Braintree, Massachusetts, at age 4 years, 2 months and 1 day.^4,5

     It is not known [yet] whether he is descended from Valentine de Pettit of co. Kent, or from Sir Otes Pettit, or from some other old English line, or whether he was descended from one of the several families named Pettit who, among many Huguenot refugees, were forced to flee france under the terrible persecution of the Protestants, as on St. Bartholemew's Day in 1572, when the slaughter continued for a month and 30,000 persons were murdered.⁴ Sergeant Thomas Pettit was born in 1609 at Saffron, Walden, Essex, England.³ He was the son of Henri Pettit.^2,3 Sergeant Thomas Pettit was baptized on 17 April 1614 at Widford?, Essex?, England.² He "served his brother-in-law Oliver Mellowes more than three and a half years" to pay for money advanced for he and his wife to gain passage on the "Talbot" between September 1627 and March 1630 at England.² He married Christian Mellowes, daughter of Abraham Mellowes and Martha Bulkeley, in November 1629 at Essex, England.^2,4,3 Sergeant Thomas Pettit and Christian Mellowes emigrated from England leaving March 1629/30; They sailed on the "Talbot."^2,5 Sergeant Thomas Pettit immigrated to Charlestown (Cambridge), Massachusetts Bay Colony, arriving 2 July 1630; He sailed on the "Talbot", arriving 20 days after the flagship "Arabella" landed at Salem.^2,4,5 He served Oliver Mellows in Boston 3 1/2 years after 1634 at Boston.¹ He was consistently a non-conformist in religious life, siding with Anne Hutchinson and her brother-in-law, Rev. John Wheelwright, in their controversy with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637.^2,4 He was ordered whipped for suspicion of slander, idleness and stubbornness in 1636/37.¹ He was granted a house plot in Boston, on which the State House now stands on 8 January 1637/38 at Massachusetts Bay Colony.^2,6 He was arrested on suspicion of slander, insubordination and inciting to riot, during the trial of Anne Hutchinson on 7 March 1638.^2,6 He was convicted and sentenced to receive thirty lashes and to be held in jail at Massachusetts Bay Colony.² He was released when he agreed to leave Massachusetts Bay Colony, moving to the Falls of the Piscataqua in New Hampshire with Rev. John Wheelwright and with others founded the town of Exeter and established the Congregational Church at (then New Hampshire).² He received six acres and thirty poles as his share of Exeter upland in 1638.⁴ He was named as among the many who signed The Exeter Combination, an agreement of all original settlers of Exeter, Mass., to obey the laws of England, and although half of the 35 signers made their mark, the signature of Thomas Pettit is seen in excellent handwriting, on 4 July 1639 at Exeter, (then New Hampshire).^2,4 He was chief military man and Inspector of Staves in 1647 at Exeter, (then New Hampshire).⁴ He was noted for having a wife named Christian in 1647.¹ Selectman at Exeter, (then New Hampshire), between 1652 and 1655.⁴ He was in Exeter when it became economically necessary for the Town to become part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and unwilling to again come under the jurisdiction of the Colony, he sold his lands and relocated to Dutch controlled Long Island, establishing there Newtown (now Elmhurst) in 1655.² He was elected Town Marshal on 8 May 1657 at Newton, Long Island, New York.⁴ He was named on the list of freeholders on 4 December 1666 at Newton, Long Island, New York.⁴ He died before October 1668 at Newton, Long Island, New York.^2,3

     Mary Sweetser was born in 1637 at Tring, Hertfordshire, England.³ She was the daughter of Seth Sweetser of Charleston and Bethia Cooke.^2,1 Mary Sweetser married Samuel Blanchard of Charleston, son of Thomas Blanchard and Elizabeth (?), on 3 January 1654/55 at Charleston, Massachusetts; His 1st.² Mary Sweetser witnessed the will of Seth Sweetser of Charleston on 24 May 1662; Bequests to wife Elizabeth, daughter Sarah, son Samuel Blancher and his wife Mary, daughter Hannah Fitch and to his wife's three children. Son Benjamin and Edward Drinker executors. Mr. Richard Russell and my brother Thomas Gold overseers.¹ Mary Sweetser died on 20 February 1669 at age 32 years.¹

     Grace Chetwood was born in 1614? At England. She married Reverend Peter Bulkeley, son of Reverend Doctor Edward Bulkeley of Odell and Olive Irby, circa 1634 at Bedfordshire, England; His 2nd.^1,2 Grace Chetwood emigrated leaving 8 May 1635; Mrs. Bulkeley traveled to the new world on the ship "Elizabeth & Ann". Accompanying her were several of Rev. Bulkeley's children by his first wife.² She died on 21 April 1669 at New London, New London County, Connecticut, at age 55 years.¹

     Henrietta Maria de Bourbon was born on 25 November 1609 at Le Louvre, Paris, France.¹ She was the daughter of Henri IV, roi de France and Marie de Médicis.¹ Henrietta Maria de Bourbon married Charles I, King of England, Scotland and Ireland, son of James I, King of England and Scotland and Queen Consort of England Anne of Denmark, on 11 May 1625 at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent, England.¹ Henrietta Maria de Bourbon died on 10 September 1669 at Chateau de Colombe at age 59 years, 9 months and 16 days.¹ Henrietta Maria de Bourbon was buried in St. Denis, Paris, France.¹

     Gysberts Lubberts was born circa 1620 at "de Beemster", Noord Holland, the Netherlands. "Beemster" is an area about 5 miles north of the city of Purmerend which is iteself some 10 miles n-ne of Amsterdam. He married Elizabeth Thomas on 24 February 1655 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.¹ Gysberts Lubberts died before 1670.

     Maria Vigne was born circa 1613 at Valenciennes, Countship of Hainaut, Kingdom of Holland.¹ She was the daughter of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville. Maria Vigne accompanied the immigration of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville before 1623 to Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands; Fleeing religious persecution in their homeland, they left for the city of Leiden, which was a protective and tolerant haven from war and prejudice. After they began living among the Dutch, the Vigne name was changed to Vienje. Guillaume became known as Willem Vienje and Adrienne as Ariantje Vienje. Maria Vigne accompanied the immigration of Ghislain Vigne in April 1624 to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; The Vignes are believed to have sailed from Holland in April of 1624 on the "Nieuw Nederlandt". Some of the other colonists, including Joris Janszen Rapaelje, were also from Valenciennes. The Vignes had three daughters, Christine, Maria and Rachel, when they sailed to America. Most of the 30 families must have had children, as the total number of new colonists was about 120. Upon reaching the Hudson River in mid-May, they found a French ship that was trying to claim the territory for the king of France. With the help of a smaller Dutch ship that arrived from the West Indies, they politely aimed their cannons and escorted the French ship out to sea. Cornelis May, captain of the "Nieuw Nederlandt," became the first Director of the New Netherlands colony.¹ Maria Vigne married Jan Roos circa 1631; Her 1st.¹ Maria Vigne witnessed the marriage of Jans Janszen Damen and Adrienne Cuville in 1632 at New York.^2,3,4 Maria Vigne married Abraham Isaacson Ver Planck, son of Isaac Ver Planck, in 1634; Her 2nd. Maria Vigne was a witness where Dirck Volckertszen sued, along with his sister-in-law Maria Vigne, by Claes Van Elstandt, elder of the Dutch Reformed Church, for not paying for the grave of Adrienne Cuvelier, and claimed to have given the money to Cornelis Van Tienhoven who disappeared, on 8 March 1658.¹ Maria Vigne was sued, along with her brother-in-law, Dirck Volckertszen, by Claes Van Elstandt, elder of the Dutch Reformed Church, for not paying for the grave of Adrienne Cuvelier, and claimed to have given the money to Cornelis Van Tienhoven who disappeared, on 8 March 1658.¹ She died in 1670.

     Apollonia Selyns was born on 15 April 1625. She was the daughter of Willem Jansen Selyns and Susanna Ryckert. As of before 1652,her married name was Loten. Apollonia Selyns married Jan Loten before 1652. Apollonia Selyns died on 1 February 1670 at age 44 years, 9 months and 17 days.

     Frederick III, King of Denmark and Norway was born on 18 March 1609 at Haderslev, Denmark.² He was the son of Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway and Anne von Brandenburg.^2,3 Frederick III, King of Denmark and Norway married Sofie Amalie von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, daughter of Georg, Herzog von Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Anna Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt, in 1643 at Schloß Glücksburg.^3,4 Frederick III, King of Denmark and Norway died on 9 February 1670 at Copenhagen, Denmark, at age 60 years, 10 months and 22 days.²

     Elizabeth (?) was born circa 1587 at Gloucestershire?, England. She married Thomas Harris, son of William Harris and Agnes Mason, circa 1613 at England; Her 1st.^1,2 Elizabeth (?) married Deacon William Stitson between May 1631 and September 1634; Her 2nd.^2,1,3 Elizabeth (?) died on 16 February 1669/70 at Massachusetts. She is said to have died age 93, but more likely a decade younger.^2,4

     Also called Mary.² Mary Baldwin was born in 1612 at England. She married Thomas Richardson of Woburn, son of Thomas Richardson of Standon and Katherine Duxford of West mill, on 4 March 1635 at Charleston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Mary Baldwin joined the church on 21 February 1635/36 at Charleston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.³ She died on 19 May 1670 at Woburn, Massachusetts, at age 58 years.⁴

Wolfert Webber Jr. was baptized on 18 January 1604 at the Reformed Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands; "Parents, Wolfert Webbertz., wijn copper, and Annetgen Kocks; witnesses, Heijnrik Selyns."¹ He was the son of Wolfert Webber Sr. and Annetgen Kock.¹ Marriage banns for Wolfert Webber Jr. and Anna Jansz Wallis were published on 2 January 1630 at the Reformed Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands; "Wolfert Webber, de Jonge, born in Amsterdam, aged 26 years, assisted by Wolfert Webber, his father, residing on Heergracht, and Anna Wallis, born in Amsterdam, age 19 years, assisted by Saara Walis, her mother, residing at Oestermacht."² Wolfert Webber Jr. married Anna Jansz Wallis, daughter of Jan Wallis and Sara du Pire, on 22 January 1630 at the Nieuw Kerk, Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands.^2,3 As of 24 December 1634, also called Wolfert Webber de oude In the old country, Wolfert was the younger, his father the older. In the new world, when he became a father, he became "Wolfert de oude," the older, and his own son was referred to as "de jonge." Wolfert Webber Jr. was received a grant of land on 2 April 1650 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York. He was brought a suit against Albert Albertsen (Terhune) for services of his son hired by Albert for 2 years on 16 February 1654.⁴ He was later, in a similar case, endeavored to oblige Claes Pieterszen Cos to employ his son on Manhattan instead of at Pavonia. There, Webber stated, "much danger is to be expected as well by water as from the Indians, of which he has had a sample." Webber continued, "if any misfortune happen to his son, either in passing over, or from the Indians or otherwise, he has done his duty, and shall avenge himself on him," Cos. (See Records of New Amsterdam, Vol. II, page 363). So dangerous was the situation with the indians that on March 28, 1656, when Nicholas Verleth had presented a petition to the Council for a convoy of six or eight soldiers to remove the frame of a house at Hoboken, sold by Verleth to Michael Jansen Vreeland for two hundred and thirty guilders, the request had to be refused owing to the danger of Indian opposition which was the more to be feared because "the savages still held in captivity about twenty of our children." (Per Records of New Amsterdam, Vol. II, page 271.) This after the Indians had assured Peter Cock on October 13, 1655, that the prisoners were all to be set free in two days. Webber's court action was heard on 22 January 1657 at the City Court, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.⁵ He and Anna Jansz Wallis were were gratefully received as members on 12 October 1664 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York. This after the withdrawal of Henricus Selyns
from preaching at the General's Bowery.⁶ Wolfert Webber Jr. died on 3 September 1670 at age 66 years, 7 months and 16 days. His wife, Anne, is listed as a widow in the Domine Selyn's Church Member List of 1686.⁷

     Walraven Klaerhout was born circa 1642 at Harlem, Noord Holland, the Netherlands. He married Cniertje Hendricks, daughter of Hendrick? (?), on 10 June 1668 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; Her 1st.¹ Walraven Klaerhout died before 1671.

     Sofie Eleonore of Saxe-Zeitz was born on 23 November 1609 at Dresden, Germany. She was the daughter of Johann Georg I, Kurfürst von Sachsen.¹ Sofie Eleonore of Saxe-Zeitz married Georg II, Landgraf von Hesse-Darmstadt, son of Ludwig V, Landgraf von Hesse-Darmstadt and Magdalene von Brandenburg, in 1627 at Schloß Torgau.¹ Sofie Eleonore of Saxe-Zeitz died on 2 June 1671 at Darmstadt, Germany, at age 61 years, 6 months and 10 days.

     George Knight was born at England. It is generally believed that he had been born in England & came here at a very early age. He was This George Knight is the oldest known progenitor of our Knight Family in America. Nothing is known for certain of his background. It has not been established that He was related to the Knights of the Boston area. It was his Great Grandson Captain Thomas Knight who left Scarbrough, Maine & settled in the area of, then Hancock, (now Waldo) County, Maine. He settled in Ducktrap Plantation, which is now Northport or Lincolnville.
This line of descent has been more than established to my satisfaction & I have no doubts as to the validity of the evidence. UPDATE: 25 Aug 1994-As of this date facts are pouring daily from our KNIGHT Family, still residing in Maine. In the near future, many more, names, dates & facts will arrive. This day I recieved 2 packets from Francis Knight Marsh of Gorham, Maine. As a rough guess, I have calculated she is about a 6th cousin to Philip Thorne, the compiler of this genealogy. Francis also included a photo of 'The Knight Rose'. This Rose is said to have had it's roots brought to America by our earliest Ancestors. It still blooms today!
The numerous descendants of George & Eleanor Knight, still abound in the State of Maine, where they have been raised with an intimate knowledge of their Knight Ancestory. They were involved in the Indian Wars in Maine plus the Revolutionary War.
At this point, it is worth noting, that in the History of Whiteside County, Illinois, a Knight Family story is retold regarding the origins of the Family. According to this book, our earliest Knight ancestor came here with 2/3 brothers from England. Professional genealogist always scoff at these THREE BROTHER TALES! They say this tale of 3 immigrant brothers is very common in family lore. True or not, it was a tale told by our Knight ancestors to the authors of that history book & it bears repeating here. I only make this an issue as, if some day, this does turn out to be accurate, there may OTHER Knight familes in America who can unlock the entire mystery for us. Only time will tell. I feel that the brother story will one day lead us back to the Knight Brothers of Massachusetts.

She married Sergeant Thomas Pettit, son of Henri Pettit, in November 1629 at Essex, England.^1,3,4 Christian Mellowes and Sergeant Thomas Pettit emigrated from England leaving March 1629/30; They sailed on the "Talbot."^1,5 Christian Mellowes accompanied the immigration of Abraham Mellowes and Martha Bulkeley after 1633 to Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.⁶ Christian Mellowes died on 2 September 1665 at Newton, NY. She died after 1673 at New York.¹

     Margery Wheeler was born on 25 April 1600 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England.^2,3 She was the daughter of Abel Wheeler and Jane Shepherd.¹ Margery Wheeler was mentioned in the will of her father, Abel Wheeler, in 1614 at Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England.⁴ She witnessed the will of Abel Wheeler on 26 February 1613/14 at Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England; Mentioned in his will as of Thornbury, a tiller; children William, Elizabeth, Margery, and Giles; wife Jane is the executrix; overseers are Thomas Barton and John Champneys; witnessed by Thomas Hauborn.^4,5 Margery Wheeler married Thomas Tayer of Braintree, son of Richard Tayer of Thornbury and Ursula Dimery, on 13 April 1618 at St. Mary's, Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England.^{1,2,6,7,8,9,10,11} Margery Wheeler witnessed the will of Jane Shepherd on 30 March 1629 at Thornbury Parish, Gloucestershire, England; "To son Giles Wheller various goods that are in his possession. (Consistory of Gloucester)."⁵ Margery Wheeler accompanied the immigration of Thomas Tayer of Braintree on 8 April 1637 to New England; He and his family arrived in America on the "Blessing" captained by John Devine, which evidently brought them to Boston Harbor.^2,12,9,13 Margery Wheeler witnessed the will of Thomas Tayer of Braintree on 21 June 1664 at Braintree, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Colony, New England; "I, Thomas Thayer, of Braintree, in the County of Suffolk, in the Massachusetts Colony, of New England, shoe maker, being in perfect health and memory, praised be to God, this 21 of June, A. D. 1664, doe make this last Will and Testament..." To his wife Margery "... all my lands, goods and estate, whatsoever, situate, lying and being in Braintree." To his son Thomas "... all that my ground lying and being over the Monotoquott River, within the limits of the said town of Braintree." To his son Ferdinanda "... my house and orchard thereunto belonging, lying, and being in Braintree." To his son Shadrach "... a parcel of ground in Braintree."^6,14 Margery Wheeler witnessed (or was recognized by) the probate of the estate of Thomas Tayer of Braintree on 13 September 1665 at Braintree, Massachusetts; Beq. to wife and sons.^6,15 Margery Wheeler died on 11 February 1672/73 at 12th month, Braintree, Massachusetts, at age 72 years, 9 months and 17 days.^{1,2,16,17,18,19}

     Thomas Marshfield was born on 6 August 1654 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of Samuel Marshfield of Springfield and Hester Wright.¹ Thomas Marshfield died on 21 June 1673 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age 18 years, 10 months and 15 days.¹

     Also called Claes Cornelise Mentelaer.² Also called Claes Cornelise Van Schouw Probably from the island of "Schouwen" in Zeeland.³ Also called Claes Meutalaer "It might be well here to say something about the surname. The original form as first found in any records is Wijkhof. But Claes Corneliszen (1) never used it. Wherever he has another name it is either Van Schouw or Meutelaer. Van Schouw, of course, means from the Island of Schouw (off the coast of Zeeland). Meutelaer is a local or dialect word having different meanings. Generally it means "grumbler" or "mutterer," or one who teases. But an educated Hollander living in Iowa told me that, three hundred years ago, it was used in localities to mean the Beggars of the Sea. (See Motley's "Rise of Dutch Republic.") And none of Claes Corneliszen's children used the surname except Pietertje, his daughter, who was the mother of all the Van Arsdales in this country." (They don't know about Tryntje, I guess - rbs.).⁴ Claes Corneliszen was born in 1597 at the Island of Schouw, Zeeland, Netherlands.¹ He immigrated to Albany, Kings County, New York, arriving 7 April 1637; There is no record of his arrival in this country, but it is probable he came in the yacht "Rensselaerwyck," with his son Peter Claesen, reaching New Amsterdam March 4, 1637, and Albany April 7, 1637. This vessel sailed from Amsterdam October 1, 1636. He was does not appear in the Albany records. He had a daughter, Pietertje, baptized in New Amsterdam in 1640. Whether he had other children is uncertain, but probably he had several. He was sometimes called Van Schouw and sometimes Meutelaer. He appears several times in the Court records of New Amsterdam, and received a grant of land from the Government in 1642, covering what is now called Brooklyn Heights, in the City of Brooklyn. Later he sold this tract and resided in Flatlands, Kings county. Flatlands (now 32nd Ward of Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York) was then called New Amersfoort. He obtained a patent for 16 morgens, located between the ferry and the lands of Andries Hudde, on 14 November 1642 at Brooklyn, New York.³ He married Catalyntie Janse before 1671.⁵ Claes Corneliszen died after 1674.¹

     Ursula Dyrcks was probably from Rotterdam.¹ Also called Orseltie Dirkse.¹ She was born in 1620 at Holstein(?), Holland, the Netherlands.² She married Anthony Jansen Westerbrook in 1658 at Flatbush, Kings County, New York.² Ursula Dyrcks died after 1674 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York.² She witnessed the baptism of Maria Demott on 22 December 1678 at Hurley, Ulster County, New York.³

     Samuel Marshfield Jr. was born on 25 March 1659 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of Samuel Marshfield of Springfield and Hester Wright.¹ Samuel Marshfield Jr. died on 1 March 1674 at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, at age 14 years, 11 months and 4 days.¹
