      Thomas Stokes of Lower Shadwell was a Quaker.⁶ He was born in 1640 at Lower Shadwel, Stepney Parish, London, Middlesex, England.⁷ He was born in 1643.⁸ He was the son of Henry Stokes of Stepney and Elizabeth (?).⁵ Thomas Stokes of Lower Shadwell was seized because of his adherence to Quaker doctrines and cast into Newgate Prison in 1665 at London, England.³ He was placed on a barge once more, he and his fellow-prisoners sailed down the Thames with an escort of troops from the Tower of London to exile in Holland on 4 August 1665.⁹ He was transferred from the barge to the Black Spread-Eagle which sailed from Plymouth on 23 February 1665/66.¹⁰ He was captured by a Dutch man-of-war, then at war with England, and taken to Hoorn in North Holland, where the convicts of England were held by their national foes to be exchanged as prisoners of war.³ He was provided with a passport by the Dutch and returned home to England.³ He was admitted a member "upon sight of his father's copy" of the Bakers Company on 3 July 1667.¹¹ He and Mary Barnard of Stepney were Quaker.¹² Thomas Stokes of Lower Shadwell married Mary Barnard of Stepney, daughter of John Barnard and Frances Munt, on 30 December 1668 at Devonshire House, Westbury Street Friends' Meeting, Bishops Gate street, Stepney Parish, London, Middlesex, England.^{13,7,12,14,15,16} Thomas Stokes of Lower Shadwell was a witness to John Stokes as he received land in the New World... "THOMAS HOOTEN of the Parish of St. Ann, Black Friars, and John Stokes of Wentworth street, in the Parish of Stepney, both of which places are in London, in the county of Middlesex, England, became the owners, as tenants in common, of a certain amount of proprietory rights in West New Jersey. Thomas was a tallow chandler, and John a baker; by these avocations they respectively maintained their families, and gained some extra means to make a venture in the enterprise so much talked of among Friends at that time. The deed conveying this interest was made from William Penn and the other trustees of Edward Bylynge to Thomas Hooten in the year 1676, who immediately conveyed the undivided half-part thereof to John Stokes. It is possible that they were creditors of Edward Bylynge, whose failure in business a short time before involved so many of his creditors in loss, and led to much trouble concerning his estate. Thomas Hooten and John Stokes were relatives; perhaps their wives were sisters; both were members of the religious denomination of Friends, and were seeking some new place of abode, where their notions of right might be more freely indulged in, with some hope of promulgating their doctrines in peace. " With John Stokes. Thomas Stokes of Lower Shadwell immigrated to New Castle, Delaware, arriving August 1677; "Thomas and his family sailed for America in the ship "Kent" in order to avoid persecution, and also with the object of seeking new fields of labor, and arrived at New Castle, 6th month, 1677, and proceeded to Burlington, West New Jersey, and settled on a tract of land containing one hundred and sixty-two and a half acres. The deed for the same was from his brother, John Stokes, of Wentworth street, London, England."^12,4 He was party to the making of "the concessions and agreements of the proprietors, freeholders and inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey, in America," in September 1677.⁷ He lived between September 1677 and June 1678 at Burlington, New Jersey; He perhaps remained here until the next year (upon arriving), with the others, for mutual defence, and to view the country before he made selection of a place for settlement. This was, however, done in due time, and was chosen from among many on Northampton river, or, as it is now generally known, Rancocas creek. He relocated to Rancocas Creek, New Jersey, circa 1678. He was located three hundred acres of land fronting on the northerly side of the Northampton river, and a portion of the tract remains in the family, having passed down from father to son by will. Thomas named the location Stockingham. "He was a man of influence, and took a very active part in the affairs of the colony. He served on the first grand jury held in Burlington county, and was one of the signers of the laws and concessions of West New Jersey.". He relocated to live with his son following the death of his wife after 1699 at Waterford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.¹²

     Joseph Rockwood was born on 27 May 1671 at Mendon, Worcestor County, Massachusetts.^1,2 He was the son of John Rockwood of Mendon and Johanna Ford.¹ Joseph Rockwood begins to appear in various town offices about this time in 1708 at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.³ He died on 22 January 1722/23 at Mendon, Worcestor County, Massachusetts, at age 51 years, 7 months and 26 days. He is noted as deceased, having had children, in the will of his father dated 8 Jun 1724.^4,5 He witnessed the will of John Rockwood of Mendon on 8 June 1724; “To wife Rebekah 1/3. Balance to Grandchildren, viz: to children of son Joseph deceased, and Priscilla, daughter of John Corbit, and Hannah Brown daughter of John Darling and Mercy Thompson wife of David together with Mary Holbrook wife of Joseph and her sister Ann Cook my granddaughters. Son in law John Darling 1 shilling and no more because of legacy I gave to his daughter Hannah Brown. Son in law Nicholas Cook 1 shilling. Son in law Isaac Thayer one shilling because of legacy I gave to his children. Son in law Jonathan Heyward 1 shilling because I gave £10 to his children he had by his first wife. Grandson John Corbit sole executor.”.⁶ His children shared in the division of their grandfather, John Rockwood's, estate. On 8 June 1724.⁴

     Richard Clemence of Providence was born in 1655 at Providence, Rhode Island.¹ He was the son of Thomas Clemence and Elizabeth (?).³ Richard Clemence of Providence married Sarah Smith, daughter of John Smith of Providence and Sarah Whipple, in 1686 at Providence, Rhode Island.³ Richard Clemence of Providence left a will on 2 January 1720/21 at Providence, Rhode Island; Clemence, Richard of Providence, yeoman, being now grown in years. Mentions: my ancient [unnamed] mother living. Wife Sarah Clemence. Sons Thomas Clemence and Richard Clemence. Daughtera Ann Applebey, Sarah Angel, and Abigail Thornton. My two grandchildren James Applebey under 21 and Ann Applebey under 18 and unmarried. Witnesses: William Hopkins, Joseph Smith, James Olney.² He died on 11 October 1723 at Providence, Rhode Island, at age 68 years.^2,3 His estate was probated on 9 December 1723.²

     Sarah Abbott was born on 6 September 1660 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.¹ She was the daughter of George Abbot, tailor and Sarah Farnum.¹ Sarah Abbott married John Faulkner on 19 October 1681 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.¹ Sarah Abbott died on 6 November 1723 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 63 years and 2 months.¹

     Johanna Ford was the daughter of William Ford and Anne Eames who settled in Marshfield, Mass.^1,3 She was born circa 1636 at Braintree, Massachusetts, New England.⁴ She was the daughter of William Ford of Marshfield and Anne Eames.^2,1 Johanna Ford married John Rockwood of Mendon, son of Richard Rockwood of Braintree and Agnes Lovell, on 15 July 1662 at 7th mo., Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts; Married by Peter Brackett.^4,5 Johanna Ford and John Rockwood of Mendon were the ancestor of U.S. President Garfield.⁶ Johanna Ford died in 1724 at Mendon, Worcestor County, Massachusetts, America.⁴

     Mary Neale was born in 1664.¹ She married John Thayer Sr., son of Thomas Jr. Tayer of Braintree and Hannah Tayer, Mrs., before 1686.¹ Mary Neale died in 1724 at age 60 years.¹

     Hannah Belcher was born on 2 August 1664 at Massachusetts.¹ She was the daughter of John Belcher of Braintree and Sarah (?).¹ Hannah Belcher married Ebenezer Owen, son of William Owen and Elizabeth Davies, before 1690 at Massachusetts; Her 1st.² Hannah Belcher married Josiah Owen Sr., son of William Owen and Elizabeth Davies, in 1691 at Massachusetts; Her2nd (widow).¹ Hannah Belcher died on 7 January 1724 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, at age 59 years, 5 months and 5 days.¹

     Ann Lovejoy was born on 21 December 1659 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.^1,2 She was the daughter of John Lovejoy of Andover and Mary Osgood.^1,2 Ann Lovejoy married Jonathan Blanchard, son of Samuel Blanchard of Charleston and Mary Sweetser, on 26 May 1685 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.^3,4 Ann Lovejoy died on 29 February 1724 at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 64 years, 2 months and 8 days.¹ Ann Lovejoy was buried in South Parish Cemetery, Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.¹
