Dirck Volckertszen1,2

b. circa 1610
Also called Dirck Holgersen This was probably his original name. How it became Volckertszen, when the Dutch had an H in their vocabulary is unclear. Dirck Volckertszen was born circa 1610 at Norway. He married Christina Vigne, daughter of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville, in 1630/31. Dirck Volckertszen was obtained a patent for 25 morgens on the East River and Mespath Kil on 3 April 1645 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York. Mespath Kil thereafter became known as Noorman's Kil - "HAY or HAYS, JACOB, bought Sept. 9, 1653, of Dirck Volkertse his patent of 25 morgens on the East River and Noorman's Kil in Buk."1 He was sold to Jacob Hay the property he'd purchased in 1645 on 9 September 1653 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York. This per p. 278 of Cal. of Dutch Man., and which was patented May 1, 1679, to David Jochems, who m. Christina Cappeoens wid. of said Hay, as per p. 321 of Vol. II. of Stiles's Brn.1 He was sued, along with his sister-in-law Maria Vigne, by Claes Van Elstandt, elder of the Dutch Reformed Church, for not paying for the grave of Adrienne Cuvelier, and claimed to have given the money to Cornelis Van Tienhoven who disappeared, on 8 March 1658.3 He was a witness where Maria Vigne sued, along with her brother-in-law, Dirck Volckertszen, by Claes Van Elstandt, elder of the Dutch Reformed Church, for not paying for the grave of Adrienne Cuvelier, and claimed to have given the money to Cornelis Van Tienhoven who disappeared, on 8 March 1658.3 Dirck Volckertszen was purchased two other peices of property before 1670 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York. One peice was sold to his son, Volkert, in 1670, and the other was sold to Peter Praa in 1718/19. From the Abstract of NY Wills, Vol III, we see "Page 431.--In the name of God, Amen. I, PETER PRAA, of Bushwick, in Kings County, "being in pretty good health." ... I leave to my daughter, Elizabeth Meseroll, all that tract of land and meadow which I purchased of Dirck Volkertse, adjoining the land I now live on, upon the west side, and east by the land of John Meseroll, and to run north, as the fence stands, and on the south, east, and west by ditches to the river." This will was dated August 6, 1739 and proved, September 5, 1740.4,5,1 He was a witness where Pieter Schamp received as a wedding gift from his father-in-law some 18 acres of land on 7 October 1674 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York.

In 1675, Dirck Volckertszen appeared on the census at Bushwick, Kings County, New York, Details provided: On the assessment roll of the town.

He was a witness where Pieter Schamp received a conveyence from Dirck Volkerse in which Dirck officially signed over his earlier gift of some 20 acres of land on the north side of Volkert Dirckse on 24 April 1677 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York.6 Dirck Volckertszen was gave to his son-in-law, Pieter Schamp, morgans of land on 24 April 1677 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York.

Christina Vigne was born between 1610 and 1613 at Valenciennes, Countship of Hainaut, Kingdom of Holland.2 She was the daughter of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville.1 Christina Vigne accompanied the immigration of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville before 1623 to Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands; Fleeing religious persecution in their homeland, they left for the city of Leiden, which was a protective and tolerant haven from war and prejudice. After they began living among the Dutch, the Vigne name was changed to Vienje. Guillaume became known as Willem Vienje and Adrienne as Ariantje Vienje. Christina Vigne accompanied the immigration of Ghislain Vigne in April 1624 to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; The Vignes are believed to have sailed from Holland in April of 1624 on the "Nieuw Nederlandt". Some of the other colonists, including Joris Janszen Rapaelje, were also from Valenciennes. The Vignes had three daughters, Christine, Maria and Rachel, when they sailed to America. Most of the 30 families must have had children, as the total number of new colonists was about 120. Upon reaching the Hudson River in mid-May, they found a French ship that was trying to claim the territory for the king of France. With the help of a smaller Dutch ship that arrived from the West Indies, they politely aimed their cannons and escorted the French ship out to sea. Cornelis May, captain of the "Nieuw Nederlandt," became the first Director of the New Netherlands colony.2 Christina Vigne married Dirck Volckertszen in 1630/31. Her married name was Volckertszen. Christina Vigne witnessed the marriage of Jans Janszen Damen and Adrienne Cuville in 1632 at New York.3,4,5

Jan Vinje was born circa 1624/25 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York. He was the first white male born in New Netherlands. The first European child born in New York was Sara Rapaelje, daughter of Joris Janszen Rapaelje and Catalina Trico, in June 1625.2 He was the son of Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville.1 Jan Vinje witnessed the marriage of Jans Janszen Damen and Adrienne Cuville in 1632 at New York.3,4,5 Jan Vinje was granted the Great Burgher Right. "We, Burgomasters of the City of Amsterdam in New Netherland, hereby certify and declare, that Lourens Cornelisen van Wel has asked for and received from us the Great Burgher Right and the benefits thereof, has taken the Burghers oath and paid the fees to the Treasurer." This meant he was a citizen of the highest standing on 14 April 1657 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.6 He was witnessed the baptism of "Ida, daughter of Hendrick Rycke and Ide Jacobszen" on 6 April 1678 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.7 He was resided in 1679 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York. "This information is from the Journal of the Labadist missionaries, Danker and Sluyter, who visited New York in 1679. While in town they lodged with Jacob Hellekers, the site of whose house is now occupied by the building nr. 255, Pearl Street, near Fulton Street. They were therefore near neighbors to Jan Vinje, with whom they soon became acquainted. He was then, they tell us, about sixty-five years of age, a prominant man, well known to all the citizens, many of whom had themselves resided in town and had been intimately acquainted with him for from thirty to fourty years. It was the common understanding that he was the first person born in the colony, and the date of his birth would therefore go back to the year 1614." He lived in 1686 at Smit Straet, ["Smith Street."] (William Street, below Wall Street.), New York City, Kings County, New York.8
