FatherDoctor Benjamin Rush b. 24 December 1745, d. 19 April 1813
MotherJulia Stockton b. circa 1759
Lieutenant John B. Rush was the father of Elizabeth Rush; the only child of John and Julia Ann Rush; John Rush was a nephew of Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.1 Said to be a nephew of Benjamin Rush, signer, in the Farwell Family genealogy, for whom children of Lydia and John Dennis Farwell would be descendants from. Benjamin, however, had no nephews. His one brother with children had five daughters, all you died young and unmarried. The thought that Elizabeth's father was a nephew, and not a son of Benjamin Rush, comes, perhaps?, from useage of the term "Grandniece." This was not used precisely as we use it today. Niece and nephew more endearing term for closer relations than what they represent today. If his name was John, then there is no reason to discount Lt. John Rush as father, the man who went insane following troubled war years. And having such limited time to produce a family, only managed one child, Elizabeth, and mother and daughter walking out of, or excluded from, the Rush family forevermore. Too, my greatuncles on the Hollinshead side looked very similar to Bejamin Rush with regards to their balding pattern. Other Hollinshead cousins exhibit similar balding (from the same descent).2,3 Lieutenant John B. Rush was born on 17 July 1777 at Mt. Welcome, Maryland.4 He was the son of Doctor Benjamin Rush and Julia Stockton. Lieutenant John B. Rush attended Princeton University, but did not take a degree, before 1794 at New Jersey.5 He enrolled as a medical apprentice to his father in September 1794.6 He defended his father during the Yellow Fever quarrels, and when one of his father's detractors called him an "impudent puppy" he caned him on 6 October 1797.5 He was appointed surgeon in the United States Navy on 11 May 1798.6 He was promoted to lieutenant on 5 March 1799.6 He served on the USS Ganges and Adams during the quasi-war with France between 5 March 1799 and 29 June 1802.5 Lieutenant, U.S. Navy between 5 March 1799 and 29 June 1802. He resigned his commission and returned home on 29 June 1802.5 He was educated on 11 December 1802 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; resumed the study of medicine. He returned home evidently under some sort of emotional reaction against navy life, according to his father's journal entry on 11 December 1802.6 He was elected a member of the staff of the Philadelphia General Hospital at the time of his graduation, but for some reason declined to serve in 1804.6 He took his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1804.6 He set off for South Carolina with Major Butler on 16 October 1804.6 He married Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. before 1805. Lieutenant John B. Rush commanded a gunboat between 1805 and 1806 at Boston, Massachusetts.6 He reentered the navy as a sailing master in September 1805.6 He commander of various gunboats between 1807 and 1808 at New Orleans, Louisiana.6 He fought a duel with Lt. Benjamin Taylor, a friend, and commanding officer of Gunboat No. 15, New Orleans Station, and killed him on 1 October 1807 at New Orleans, Louisiana.6 He was relieved of duty in consequence of mental derangement in September 1808.6 He was ill with a mental condition between 1810 and 1837 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He returned home "in a state of deep melancholy brought on by his killing a brother officer ... in a duel" and placed in a Pennsylvania Hospital on 3 February 1810.6,7 He was recognized in the will of Doctor Benjamin Rush on 18 January 1812; Leaves to his wife Julia Rush, his farm called Lydenham near Philadelphia, to receive income, etcetera, for support of herself, her minor sons and daughter Julia Rush, at her death to his children. Son John's share in trust while in his present insane state. Great great grandfather, John Rush formerly an officer in Oliver Cromwell's Army. Sons: Dr. James Rush, Richard Rush, Benjamin Rush, Samuel Rush and William Rush. Legacy to servant William Bowen.

Executors: Said wife Julia Rush and sons Dr. James Rush and Benjamin Rush.

Witnesses: Philip Syng, Physick, and John S. Dorsey. Letters granted to Benjamin

"I gather you are reasonable familiar with the Rebellion of 1837 (the Patriots' War). It is the main reason you are an American and not a Canadian. Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews were two of William Lyon Mackenzie's senior lieutenants. When the rebellion went in the ditch, WLM split for the US. Many of his supporters were rounded up and jailed. Some were shipped back to prison in England; others kept in Toronto. The decision was taken to hang Samuel and Peter to send a message that armed insurrection was not going to be taken lightly, in view of recent history south of the border. Despite a petition pleading for clemency, the two were hanged April 12, 1838." - e-mail from my cousin Brian in Canada, 19 Oct 98.1,2 Samuel Lount was buried in the Toronto Necropolis Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It was told he had charge of a considerable amount of armament and ammunition and frustrated the efforts of the British to capture it.
It is an interesting but seldom recalled fact that a small colony of settlers in Clyde Township were participants of the rebellion in Canada. Soon after the failure of their cause, they came to the township within a short period of time --- all in 1839.
They included John Hollinshead, John Wilson, Donald Blue, Samuel Currie, Richard Beswick, Zachariah Dent, and William Wilson. The last named was captured by the British and served a term in jail.
The so-called Patriot's War or McKenzie Rebellion was of brief duration. William Lyons McKenzie, a journalist, led the struggle for liberalization in government. His followers fought against the so-called Family Compact. They allegedly numbered 800-900. On Nov. 25, 1837, he proclaimed a provisional government for Upper Canada. After defeat, he fled to Navy Island in the Niagara River. It was United States property and he made forays from there. He was eventually captured by the United States government and put in prison for 11 months for violating neutrality laws..

Also called Sarah Abbott 2nd.2,3 I make this connection, that the Sally Abbott who married Nathan Thayer in Richmond, NH, was the daughter of Obed Abbott, of Franklin County for several reasons: 1) She has a sister of the right name and age to have married Nathan's nephew, Levi, who followed Nathan to Waitsfield, Vermont. 2) The children of Sarah/Sally and Nathan Thayer are named after the Abbott clan with names like Aaron and Obed. 3) Hannah and Sarah's brother, Eli, preceeded them all to Waitsfield, Vermont.4 Sally Abbott was born on 3 April 1762 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2,3 She was the daughter of Corporal Obed Abbott and Elizabeth Edmunds.2 Sally Abbott was born on 4 September 1765.5,1 She lived from 5 April 1777 to 9 January 1779 at Shutesbury (near New Salem), Franklin County, Massachusetts; She lived just 14 miles south of Richmond, New Hampshire.6 She lived with Corporal Obed Abbott from 5 April 1777 to 9 January 1779 at Shutesbury (west of New Salem), Franklin County, Massachusetts.6 Sally Abbott married Nathan Thayer Sr., son of Jeremiah Thayer Sr. and Alice Holbrook, in 1793.1 Sally Abbott died on 9 November 1838 at age 76 years, 7 months and 6 days.1

b. 1788, d. 25 September 1842
Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. was the mother of Elizabeth Rush; the only child of John and Julia Ann Rush; John Rush was a nephew of Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.3 Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. was born in 1788 at Pennsylvania. She married Lieutenant John B. Rush, son of Doctor Benjamin Rush and Julia Stockton, before 1805. By this time Lt. John Rush, the possible father of her daughter Elizabeth, was already committed into the asylum. In 1812. Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. a stout patriot in her early days, and frequently donned male attire and performed picket duty whenever she got the opportunity, at her home in Philadelphia in 1812?.1

In 1840, Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. was enumerated with John Hollinshead on the census at unidentified township, Whiteside County, Illinois, Details provided: Female, age 70-80. A typo since we know she was there.4

Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. died on 25 September 1842 at Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois, at age 54 years.5 Julia Ann Rush, Mrs. was buried in the Hollinshead Family Cemetery, Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois. History recorded the first adult death in Ustick Township as that of being Mrs. Julia Ann Rush's.1 She was "The husband of Mrs. Rush was the brother of Richard Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence." - History of Whiteside County, 1877. I think because Richard D. was also an important personage, he was considered as good as Dr. Benjamin Rush with regards to signing. In fact, Richard Rush signed an important treaty with England following the War of 1812. The DAR report on order will hopefully settle this matter on who Julia Ann was married to, and perhaps some of her background as well. - RBS No, DAR report has nothing. In 1877.6
