Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover1,2

Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover was born circa 1822 at Ohio.3,4,5 He appeared on the tax list in 1847 at Wapello County, Iowa.1

In 1847, Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover appeared on the census at Wapello County, Iowa, Details provided: Tax list.1

He married Eliza E. Fenner on 5 January 1847 at Green Township, Wapello County, Iowa.6

In 1852, Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover appeared on the census at Dahalonega Township, Wapello County, Iowa, Details provided: appeared in the State Census.7

On 2 August 1860, Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover was Head of Household on the census at Green Township, Wapello County, Iowa, Details provided: Henry Hoover, age 38, farmer, born in Ohio.. Enumerated with him were Eliza E. Fenner, James K. P. Hoover, Mary Jane Hoover and Joseph G. Hoover.8

Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover enlisted in Company "D" of the Fifteenth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry (Union) at the age of 39 on 15 October 1861 at Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.2 He mustered on 1 November 1861 at Keokuk, Iowa.2 "On the morning of April 1, 1862, the regiment marched to St. Louis, where it embarked, with orders to report to General Grant at Savannah, Tenn. Arriving, the night before the commencement of the battle of Shiloh."9 "The brigade now returned to Corinth, where, on the 3d and 4th of October, 1862, it took part in the hard fought battles in and around that place. the Fifteenth Iowa occupied and advanced position and suffered heavy loss."9 "Near the close of the year 186[3], in response to the call of the Government, Three-fourths of the men of the Fifteenth Iowa had re-enlisted for three years, or during the war, to date from the expiration of their original term of service."9 He re-enlisted and re-mustered on 6 December 1863.2 "On the 3d of February, 1864, the regiment, with its brigade and division, again took up the line of march and became part of the army, under command of Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman, which penetrated far into the interior of the State of Mississippi."9 "After a brief respite, the regiment went into battle on July 28, 1864, and again gloriously sustained the honor of the flag. The combined losses of the regiment in these three days of battle were 190 men and officers out of 428 engaged, making an aggregate loss of forty-five per cent. No regiment that participated in the great Atlanta campaign made a better record."9 He was promoted Sixth Corporal on 1 May 1865.2 He mustered out and was noted for Distinguished Service on 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Before disbanding, Lieut. Col. George Pomutz issued a farewell order, in which, after recounting the experience of the regiment amid the trials, dangers and hardships of war, he concludes as follows: Soldiers of the Fifteenth Iowa;--Your record is a noble one. For three and a half years you have borne the banner of the stars and stripes, the emblem of the power and unity of or Government; at the same time as the exponent of your own determination to assist in upholding that Government nd its laws, you have carried and defended that banner through a distance marched, and traveled, of seven thousand eight hundred ninety-eight miles, since March, 1862. Out of the aggregate number of 1, 763 men who have been members of the regiment since its organization, 1, 051 are out, a fearful proportion of whom comprises those killed, the deceased and those crippled and disabled for life. Proof enough of the devotion of the members of the regiment to our Government and its laws. Then let our actions and deeds show, when we return to our firesides, that we are the foremost in obeying the laws of the country we have been fighting to uphold, that we are determined to let our future conduct ever be that of peaceful citizens in time of peace, as it has been that of true warriors in time of war.2 He died before 30 June 1870.10
