John Wesley Stewart was a logger between 1887 and 1915. John was a lumberman in Michigan. From the journal of Lake City resident, Martin Reeder, comes the following description of a local lumberman: "The old time lumberjack was a prince of a fellow, tough, hard, cheerful. But when they were drunk they were the hardest, toughest, (?) most dangerous men on earth. With cork shoes, I mean spiked, they enjoyed walking their man and most all of them had calk marks on their faces for life. They never knew when to quit. No one gave in and all fought as long as they could stand. But when it was over they were generally good friends. In the spring they came out for their drunks and for an outfit for the drive to the mills. Cork shoes, heavy woolens and caps. When the drive tied up at the mills they went back home. Walked. No roads. No money left."7 He lived on 29 April 1891 at Norwich, Michigan; Per his marriage certificate. He married Lydia Almedia Philp, daughter of William H. Philp and Sarah Ann Reader, on 29 April 1891 at Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan; Married by Walter J. Cole, Clergyman. Is this the same Walter Cole who married John's sister, Cassie? Two other Philp's were in attendance. Brother and sister of Lydia? Perhaps.8,9,10 John Wesley Stewart was a Farm Laborer in June 1900 at Reeder Township, Missaukee County, Michigan.3

Charles Crooker Knight was We have 3 fotos of Chas C & 1 of Wife Julia Ann. He was 90 years 10 months & 12 days old at death. INTERESTING POINT: On 6 September 1879, in Whiteside Co., IL., a Charles C. Knight took out a wedding permit to marry Elizabeth Flora Babcock. This is 4/5 years prior to the death of Julia Ann Hollinshead. Was there a divorice?? There were other C. Knights in this time period in Whiteside Co., IL. C.C. Knight was a true american pioneer. He was one of the first settlers in Whiteside county, Illinois. As a teenager he bought his first little plot of land, broke it with an oxen pulled plow & planted wheat. At harvest time, this young stalwart pioneer took his load of wheat & hauled it in a horse drawn wagon, all the way to the Chicago marketplace, where he hoped to get top dollar for it. This trip took him 2 weeks, with young Charles sleeping on the ground, under his wagon at night. He had a short stint as a Pony Express mail carrier, lasting only 2 weeks due to his age (15). He didn't like being gone that long from his home. After he married Julia Ann Hollinshead, He bought a 1 room cabin from a neighbor who was calling it quits & rolled it 2/3 miles to his place for his Bride. As a rough living pioneer in his youth he literally lived off the land, as game was very bountiful in those early years. A friend of CC Knight is quoted as having said he had shot over 700 hundred deer in his life! Crooker was his middle name & it was a family name in the Northport area. At this point it is unknown if there is a familial tie with the Crookers. From GED file (and research of) Philip V. Thorne. He was born on 6 April 1825 at about 1815. Near the mouth of the Penobscot River. He was the son of George W. Knight Sr. and Lydia Abigail Duncan. Charles Crooker Knight married Julia Ann Hollinshead, daughter of John Hollinshead and Elizabeth Rush, on 11 October 1847 at Whiteside County, Illinois.1,2 Charles Crooker Knight died on 18 February 1916 at Clinton County, Iowa, at age 90 years, 10 months and 12 days. He died 18 Feb 1916 at 5:30 PM in the home of his dtr Elizabeth Knight-Heckerman-Flanders. He died as a result of a fall sustained 3 wks prior to his death (senile). The house address was 435 2nd St. Clinton, IA. He was 90 yrs 10 mos 12 days of age. Charles Crooker Knight was buried in Ustick Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.
