Aged Woman Of Sly Community Passes
Mrs. Martha Ellen Roten Sapp, age 87, of Sly community, died on March 15 and funeral services were conducted on Thursday by Revs. D.O. Miller, W.O. Sapp, D.L. Shepherd and R.H. Stone, officiating.
Her husband, Alfred Sapp, died some time ago. She is survived by one son, J.S. Sapp, of Sly one brother, Saunders Roten, of Fig; one sister, Miss Ada Roten, of Thaxton, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was a highly respected and esteemed citizen and will be missed in her community. Parents: Jacob ROTEN and Nancy B. LATHAM.

Interview of Wylene Roten Graybeal conducted by Chris Schultheis, August 1997:
- David Farmer was the father of Rufus Fulton Roten even though they never married and he married Maude Price. Family tradition has it that a form of negotions were held between the Farmer and Roten families. This was to settle this child out of wedlock matter. This was the custom in those days. Being the 1890s, indoor cookstoves were a new item and the Farmer family owned one and the Roten family did not. For the matter to be settled the Farmer cookstove was given to the Roten family. In exchange the matter was settled and never brought up again. Rufus Fulton Roten grew up and lived in the Roten household. Parents: Jacob ROTEN and Nancy B. LATHAM.
Spouse: David Crockett FARMER. Children were: Rufus Fulton ROTEN.
