Obituary from The Skyland Post, Ashe County, North Carolina, dated January 9, 1936:
Mrs. Vance Miller Buried Thursday
On Christmas Eve night Mrs. Vance Miller, of Apple Grove, succumbed to a lingering case of tuberculosis. She had been sick for a number of months-a part of the time being spent in a hospital. On Thursday the funeral service was conducted in the Gillespie Presbyterian Church, of which she was a charter member, by her pastor, Rev. R.H. Stone, and Rev. G.O. Miller. Internment was in a cemetery overlooking the valley of Little Horse Creek.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Miller was Miss Flossie Roten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Roten, of the Rich Hill section. Mrs. Miller was thirty-six years of age. She is survived by her parents, three sisters, one brother, her husband-the postmaster at Apple Grove, and two children-Helen and James Miller. She is the neice of Dr. U.G. Jones, of Johnson City, Tenn.
Fine tributes of her sterling qualities and fine Christian character were made at the funeral service. Until her declining health forbade it she was a Sunday School teacher. She was one of the most beloved women in that section of the county. Despite the snow and bitter cold a good congregation attended the service. Parents: Henry Lee ROTEN and Hattie JONES.

G. W. Roten, 62, Buried on Wed.
G. W. Roten, well know Ashe county man, of Smethport, died at his home last Wednesday, at the age of 62.
Funeral service was held at the Rich Hill cemetery on Friday.
The deceased is survived by his wife and eight children, Mrs. Ed Mock, and Mrs. Ned McCoy of Hemlock, Mrs. W.F. Brown, Clifton, Mrs. A.L. Roland, Nottingham, Pa., Mrs. C.F. Osborne, North Wilkesboro, and Bruce, June and Roland, of Smethport.

George W. Roten
George W. Roten was born February 3, 1881, died March 31, 1943, age 62 years, 1 month, 27 days. He was married to Artie Jones, December 24, 1902.
Unto this union were born 10 children; Mrs. Ella Mock, Hemlock, N.C., Mrs. Maggie Brown, Clifton, N.C., Mrs. Dorothy Rowland, Nottingham, Pa., Mrs. Lockis Osborne, North Wilksboro, N.C., Mrs. Lottie McCoy, Hemlock, N.C., Bruce, June and Raymond Roten, Smethport, N.C., two children being deceased.
He was converted about 13 years ago. During his illness, he told relatives and many friends he was ready to go, and would soon be at home with Jesus.
He leaves two brothers, Lillard Roten, Forest Mill, Md., and Smith Roten, Charlestown, Md.; nineteen grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Our is his eternal gain.

Grace Evelyn Noblett, 77, was remembered at funeral services held May 20 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Reeves Jones and Rev. Dana Hines officiated. Burial followed in the Richardson Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Noblett was born in Ashe County to Millard Roten and Verlie Osborne Roten. She was an electrical company assembler. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Willie B. Noblett.
She is survived by seven sons, Connie D. Roten and Bobby D. Noblett, both of Statesville, Billy Joe Noblett, Kernersville, Keith A. Noblett and Roger Noblett, both of Laurel Springs and Johnny M. Noblett and Jackie W. Noblett, both of West Jefferson; three daughters, Betty N. Parsons, Advance, Madeline R. Lambert and Anne Medley Johnson, both of West Jefferson; a brother, Ernest Roten, Statesville; three sisters, Dot Miller, Statesville, Gladys Miller, Laurel Springs and Lee Robertson, Galax, Va.; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
