- Eli Sanderson Robinson was separated from Ada Jane Roten before their child Roby was born. Family tradition has it that Ada Jane and Eli were opposites and therefore did not stay together. On the day Roby was born, Jacob Roten went to town and had Roby "bound" to him. This was the same as adoption. Roby used the surname Roten throughout his life.

J. W. Roten Dies At Home On Sat.

The funeral service for James Roby Roten, 75, of West Jefferson, who died at his home on Thursday was held Saturday afternoon at the Church of Christ in Christian Union with Rev. J.W. Billings officiating. Burial followed in the Brown cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Roten, four daughters, Mrs. Carrie Campbell, of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Marie Ashley, Woodbine, Md., Mrs. Ira Calhoun, West Jefferson; three sons, Joe, Raleigh and Warner Roten all of West Jefferson.

- Separated from Ada Jane Roten before child Roby was born. Family tradition has it that Ada Jane and Eli were opposites and therefore did not stay together. On the day Roby was born, Jacob Roten went to town and had Roby "bound" to him. This was the same as adoption. Roby used the surname Roten throughout his life. Parents: Eli Sanderson ROBINSON and Ada Jane ROTEN.
