Obituary from The Skyland Post, Ashe County, North Carolina, dated November 9, 1972:
In Memory
Funeral services were conducted for Rufus Fulton Roten, 76, of Warrensville, who died suddenly at Ashe Memorial Hospital, Tuesday. The services, under the direction of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, was led by Reverends Bill Kerr, D.H. Lutz and Dwight Ludwig. Full military honors were performed by the Beaver Creek High School R.O.T.C.. Other honors were granted by the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Veterans of Foreign wars.
Mr. Roten, a native of Ashe County, was a veteran of World War I, having served as a member of the famous American Expeditionary Force in France under the leadership of General Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing.
He was a charter member of the James-Ashley-Roten Veterans of Foreign Wars, a long-standing member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and a member of the Warrensville United Methodist Church where he served as charge treasurer for four years.
Mr. Roten was a life-long merchant who possessed a keen sense of humor. He was also a rare judge of character, always willing to help those who needed help but freeloaders did not find him an easy mark. Many of his customers who were hard pressed to pay their bill saw him finance their groceries from his own pocket.
His friendship was evident as the Warrensville Methodist Church overflowed with those who came to pay a final tribute to a truly great man.
Mr. Roten is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hatie Eller Roten, two daughters, Mrs Wylene Graybeal of Warrensville adn Mrs Juanita Wilcox of Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

- David Farmer was the father of Rufus Fulton Roten even though they never married and he married Maude Price. Family tradition has it that a form of negotions were held between the Farmer and Roten families. This was to settle this child out of wedlock matter. This was the custom in those days. Being the 1890s, indoor cookstoves were a new item and the Farmer family owned one and the Roten family did not. For the matter to be settled the Farmer cookstove was given to the Roten family. In exchange the matter was settled and never brought up again. Rufus Fulton Roten grew up and lived in the Roten household. Parents: David Crockett FARMER and Mary "Polly" ROTEN.
