He set out with a great fleet to subjugate the Slav Pirates, the Uscoks, that operated from the shelter of the Dalmatian Coast, and on defeating them took the title of Duke of Dalmatia on 9 May 1000. He associated his older son to the ducal throne circa 1002.14 He relieved the Saracen siege of the Byzantine city of Bari, the largest and most important greek community on the peninsula, by blockading the Saracen fleet, bringing provisions to the starving city, and after a three day battle outside the harbor, putting the aggresors to flight on 6 September 1002.15 He associated his younger son, Otto, with the ducal throne circa 1006.14 He left a will in 1006; He left the bulk of his possessions to the Church and poor.14 He died in 1008 at Venice. He withdrew to a remote wing of the palace, seperating himself even from his wife. He died two years later.14 He was the predecessor of Ottone, doge di Venezia; 27th Doge of Venice.9,10

Her 1st. Mechtild Billung married Boudewijn III, Graaf van Vlaanderen, son of Arnulf I "de Grote", Graaf van Vlaanderen and Alix de Vermandois, in 961; Her 1st.2 "Qui Balduinus ex Mathilde filium genuit Arnolfum minorem, et immatura morte praeventus morbo variolorum periit."4 Mechtild Billung married Gottfried I "der Gefangene", Graf von Verdun, son of Gozelo, Graf im Ardennengau, Graf im Bidgau and Uda vom Metzgau; Her 2nd (widow).2 Mechtild Billung died on 25 May 1008 at age 68 years.2

Ludgershall, Wilts.), to Godwine the Driveller."3 He left a will, which is dated 1114 (proven this date?), including bequests of land to King Æthelred, his brother Edmund, in 1014.4

     Patricius Romanorum John II Crescentius was born circa 975. He was the son of Crescentius II "the Younger", Patricius Romanorum.1 Patricius Romanorum John II Crescentius was a witness where Otto III "das Wunder der Welt", imperator augustus was forced to flee Rome, which had become his permanent residence, in face of a rebellion led by John Crescentius in 1001.1 Patricius Romanorum John II Crescentius was probably the prime mover of the rebellion which compelled the emperor, Otto III, and Pope Silvester II (999-1003), the first pope of French nationality, to flee in 1001.1 He assumed supreme authority in Rome, and after the death of the Emperor Otto III took the title of Patricius Romanorum on 24 January 1002.1 He died in 1012 at springtime. With his death the Crescentii disappeared from the history of Rome.1,2

He was the son of al-Hakam II al-Mustansir ibn 'Abd al-Rahmân, khalifa al-Qurtubi and Aurora (?).1,2 Hishâm II al-Mu'ayyad ibn al-Hakam, khalifa al-Qurtubi succeeded his father to the Caliphate at age twelve in 976.3 3rd Umayyad Caliph at Córdoba, al-Andalusia, Spain, between 976 and 1008.4 He was deposed by the hâjib (chamberlain), Muhammad ibn Abî 'Amir, known as al-Mansûr (the terror-inspiring Almanzor of the Christian chronicles), who succeeded in eliminating all temporal power of the caliph and acquired totalitarian power for himself in 1009.2,5 3rd Umayyad Caliph, restored at Córdoba, al-Andalusia, Spain, between 1010 and 1012.4 He died in 1013.1
