Grand Prince of Kiev at Rus between 978 and 1015.7 Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev was a witness where Óláfr Tryggvason, King of Norway fled with his mother, Astrid, to the court of St. Vladimir, grand prince of Kiev and of all Russia, and was trained as a Viking warrior circa 979.8 Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev consolidated the Kievan realm from Ukraine to the Baltic Sea and solidified the frontiers against incursions of Bulgarian, Baltic, and Eastern nomads before 980.5 He succeeded his brother, Yaropolk, to Kiev in 980. He was a witness where Sigurðr Eiríksson of Oprustader a man of rank at the court of Valdimar, "king of Holmgard," (i.e. Vladimir, Grand Prince of Kiev in 980) after 980.9 Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev married N. N. of Bulgaria circa 988; His 6th. Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev lent support to Basil II of Byzantium during a revolt in 989. Vladimir sent a fleet to Constantinople with a force of 8,000 Varangians, Russianized Norseman who afterwards formed the emperor's bodyguard. (The Varangian guard continued in existence until late in the Byzantine period, when it was made up largely of mercenary soldiers from England.). He made the decision of whether Kiev would opt for the Western Catholic Church or the Eastern Orthodox Church in 990. Vladimir invited not only representatives from Rome and Byzantium to listen to their cases, but also spokesmen for Islam and Judaism. The spokesmen for Islam said their faith required circumcision, abstinence from port and wine, but the afterlife would cater more than enough to every carnal pleasure, to which Vladimir's ears perked up, for he was "fond of women and indulgence." However, the circumcision and refraining from drinking wouldn't do. "Drinking is the joy of the Russians," he said, "We cannot live without it." The spokesmen for Judaism repeated the errors of the Islamic spokesmen by discussing the circumcision and pork, though they were more flexible on wine. This still wasn't enough. The Catholics thought they were in. There was no worry about circumcision, or refraining from pork or wine. However, a certain amount of fasting would be required. To which, Vladimir replied "Depart hence!" The Byzantian's offered no restrictions, and a visit to Constantinople revealed a place like Heaven on Earth. This settled the matter for Vladimir, and in 990 he was baptised in Kherson, and subsequently the citizens of Kiev were baptised en masse and under compulsion. He was baptized in 990. He married Anna Porphyrogenita of Byzantium, daughter of Romanus II, basileus Rhomaiôn and Theophano of Constantinople, in 990; His 7th. The marriage to Anna cemented the ties between Byzantine and Kiev. (She was just one more of a number of wifes and a harem of hundreds of concubines. All these women were one pleasure he would not sacrifice in becoming christian. One chronicler said he was a "fornicator immensus et crudelis.") Her brother, Basil II, gave her hand in marriage to Vladimir for his support in fighting the revolt of John Tzimisces.10,11 Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev was the predecessor of Svyatopolk I Vladimirovich, Grand Prince of Kiev; Grand Prince of Kiev.12 Vladimir I Velikiy Svyatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev died on 15 July 1015 at Berestova, near Kiev, Rus.5
