Because he did not have any surname from his ancestors, he took the name of his birth place, Paphlagonia.2 Basileus Rhomaiôn Michael IV Paphlagon was born circa 1000. He was the son of N. N. the Paphlagonian.3 Basileus Rhomaiôn Michael IV Paphlagon was co-ruler with Zoë, basilissa Rhomaiôn; Empress.4 Co-Emperor at Byzantine Empire between 1034 and 1041.2 Basileus Rhomaiôn Michael IV Paphlagon owed his elevation to his brother John the Orphanotrophus, an influential and capable eunuch, who brought him to court where the old Macedonian empress Zoe fell in love with him and married him on the death of her husband, Romanus III, in April 1034.5 He married Zoë, basilissa Rhomaiôn, daughter of Constantine VIII Porphyrogenitos, basileus Rhomaiôn and Helena of Constantinople, on 12 April 1034 at the Great Palace, Constantinople, Byzantium; Her 2nd. Neglected by her husband, Romanus, she became enamoured of Michael, her young Paphlagonian chamberlain. They were married before the body of Zoë's previous husband had been removed from the area of the pool in which he'd drowned. Killed, some say, by the very couple themselves.3 Basileus Rhomaiôn Michael IV Paphlagon was good and moral, as with all his heart he loved and afraid the God.2 He suffered from a secret illness, where many times he fell down without any voice and appeared as dead for one and a half hour each time and then he was raised again and he was coming back in his previous natural condition, and for that reason he placed himself in the hands of the God and his main interest was not to leave any church or monastery in Constantinople without gift or in the whole Roman Empire.2 He signed a 30 years' peace with the Fatimid Caliphate, thus ending a period of hostilities, circa 1037.5 He captured Messina in 1037 at Sicily.5 He captured Syracuse in 1040 at Sicily.5 He failed to subdue the ruler of Zeta, but did quell a rebellion in the Bulgarian provinces between 1040 and 1041.5 He died on 10 December 1041 at Constantinople, Byzantine Empire. He was mortally ill, from a continuously worsening epilepsy condition, and on his return from the Balkans he retired to the monastery of SS. Cosmas and Damian, where he died.5
Basileus Rhomaiôn Michael IV Paphlagon was buried in the Monastary of Saints Cosmas and Damian, Constantinople, Byzantium.

Sklerina associated with Konstantin IX Euergetes Monomachus, basileus Rhomaiôn, son of Theodosius Monomachus, before 1025; Mistress. Described by Psellus thusly: "In appearance Sclerena was not specially remarkable. On the other hand, she was certainly no easy target for insult or raillery. As for her character and intellectual ability, she could charm a heart of stone, and she was extraordinarily adept in her interpretation of any matter whatever. Her speech was wonderful. It had a delicate beauty of expression, the rhythmic perfection of a scholar. There was in her conversation an unaffected sweetness of diction, an inexpressible grace in her manner of telling a story. She bewitched me, at any rate, when, as often happened, she would ply me with questions about the Greek myths and add a point here and there herself which she had learnt from some expert on the subject. No woman ever had a more sensitive ear, although I imagine this was not a natural accomplishment, but acquired because she knew that everyone was talking about her. She could hear a soft whisper quite clearly, and a word muttered under the breath was readily understood by her."1 (?) Sklerina and Konstantin IX Euergetes Monomachus, basileus Rhomaiôn caused a revolt in Constantinople with their continued affair on 9 March 1044. Zoë, Constantine's wife, was in fact very accepting of this affair. The citizens were not. Only on the appeal of Zoë and her sister Theodora did the revolt die down. Constantine punished many of those who partook in the revolt.1 (?) Sklerina died after April 1044. Constantine was grief stricken. (?) Sklerina was buried in the Church of Saint George of the Mangana, Constantinople, Byzantium.

Also called Duke Gothelon of Upper Lorraine.1 Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen was the younger son of Graf Gottfried der Gefangene von Verdun and Mathilde Billung von Sachsen, daughter of Herzog Hermann.1 Also called Gonzelon. Also called Duke of Lothier Gothelon "le Grand" de Verdun.2,3 He was born circa 970.2,1 He was the son of Gottfried I "der Gefangene", Graf von Verdun and Mechtild Billung. Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen married Ita von Ortenau, daughter of Konrad III, Graf von Ortenau and Beatrix von Bar; Her 1st.1 Markgraf of Antwerp at Belgium between 1005 and 1044.1 Count of Verdun at Upper Lorraine, Holy Roman Empire, between 1005 and 1044.1 All of Gozelo’s children derived their names from the paternal ancestry, with the exception of the daughter named Reginlint, a name likely to trace to the tenth-century Swabian duchess Reginlint, particularly in view of its rarity.4 4th Duke of Lothier at Lower Lorraine, Holy Roman Empire, between 11 August 1023 and 1044.5,1,6 Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen witnessed the death of Louis I, comte de Chiny on 28 September 1025; Slain in battle by Duke Gonzelon of Verdun. Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen was the successor of Friedrich III von Ober-Lothringen; Duke of Upper Lorraine.5,7 Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen was must have augmented his claim to Upper Lorraine through the right of his wife, whose name and affiliation are undocumented, as military politics hardly suffice to explain Gozelo’s installment as duke of Upper Lorraine in 1033.4 He was given the Duchy of Upper Lorraine as it is customarily assumed that Gozelo’s military abilities were badly required by Emperor Konrad II in order to fend off Count Odo of Champagne, a French pretender to the recently vacated Burgundian throne, in 1033.4 Could succeed to Upper Lorraine primarily through the inherited right of his ‘former’ wife, despite their marriage being annulled, for as long as there were children, he could represent their rights, while assuming the office himself on the strength of his own more distant relationship with the house of Bar.8 Duke of Upper Lorraine at Holy Roman Empire between 1033 and 1044.1,5 He associated his son Godfrey the Bearded in the ducal government some years before his death.4 He was a witness where Louis II, comte de Chiny defeated Duke Gonzelon and avenged his father, Louis I's, death on 19 April 1044. Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen died on 19 April 1044. Slain in revenge by the son of Louis of Verdun, who he had slain in battle.2,1 He was the predecessor of Gottfried II "der Bärtige", Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen; Duke of Upper Lorraine.9,1,5 Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen was the predecessor of Gothelon II "l' Indolent", duc de Lothier; 5th Duke of Lothier.6,5 Gozelo I, Herzog von Nieder- und Ober-Lothringen was buried in Abbey Church, Bilsen, Belgium.1
