Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was the son of Romanus II and Theophano.4 He was an abrupt speaker, scorning rhetoric yet capable of wit, and described as mean, austere, and irascible, spending most of his time as though he were a soldier on guard.4 He dressed plainly and even when wearing the purple chose only a dark hue.4 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn also went by the name of Basil II "Bulgar Slayer" Bulgaroctonos = Bulgar Slayer. He was so described: pictured, both in near-contemporary history and in manuscript illustrations, as a short, well-proportioned figure, with brilliant light-blue eyes, a round face, and full, bushy whiskers, which he would twirl in his fingers when angry or while giving an audience.4 He was so described: blue eyes, height less than average.3 He was the uncle of Maria Argyre, dogaressa di Venezia; the niece of the two joint Emperors, Basil II Bulgarslayer and Constantine VIII.5 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was born before 15 March 957 at (age 6 at the time of father's death in 963).6 He was the son of Romanus II, basileus Rhomaiôn and Theophano of Constantinople.2,3 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn and Constantine VIII Porphyrogenitos, basileus Rhomaiôn were crowned co-emperor in 960.4 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn witnessed the death of Romanus II, basileus Rhomaiôn on 15 March 963; Poisoned by his wife Theophano.7,8,9,10 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was the successor of John I Tzimisces Kourkouas, basileus Rhomaiôn; Emperor.11,12 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was described by Psellus as such: "As for his personal appearance, it betrayed the natural nobility of the man, for his eyes were light-blue and fiery, the eye-brows not overhanging nor sullen, nor yet extended in one straight line, like a woman's, but well-arched and indicative of his pride. The eyes were neither deep-set (a sign of knavishness and cunning) nor yet too prominent (a sign of frivolity), but they shone with a brilliance that was manly.".3 He was co-ruler with Constantine VIII Porphyrogenitos, basileus Rhomaiôn; Co-Emperor.11 Co-Emperor at Byzantine Empire between 10 January 976 and 1025.13 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn succeeded John Tzimisces, his aunt's husband (and mother's lover), to the imperial title, co-ruling with his brother, Constantine VII, he age eighteen, his brother sixteen, on 11 January 976.3 He put down the revolt of Bardas Sclerus in 979. The marriage to Anna cemented the ties between Byzantine and Kiev. (She was just one more of a number of wifes and a harem of hundreds of concubines. All these women were one pleasure he would not sacrifice in becoming christian. One chronicler said he was a "fornicator immensus et crudelis.") Her brother, Basil II, gave her hand in marriage to Vladimir for his support in fighting the revolt of John Tzimisces.2,14 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn journeyed into Armenia, where honored the forces of Tayk', and meeting the king of Apxazia (Georgia) and his father Gurgen, greatly glorified them, giving Bagrat the honor of Curopalate and to his father that of Magister, and dismissed them in peace, in 1001.15 He was a witness where Bagrat III, King of the Abkhazians, Kartvels, Hers and Kakhs met the Emperor Basil II on his passing through Armenia, and was bestowed with the honor of Curopalate in 1001.15 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was a witness where Gurgen II, King of K'art'li met the Emperor Basil II on his passing through Armenia, and was bestowed with the honor of Magister in 1001.15 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn escaped the slaughter by the Bulgarians under Samuel in 986, and vowed revenge, spending a quarter of a century battling the Bulgars. He was finally defeated the Bulgarians (though Samuel was to escape) and some 15,000 Bulgars were captured in 1014 at Balathista in the Struma Valley. Basil blinded every man, save for one in a hundred, who lost one eye only. these men were to then lead their countrymen home. The Bulgars continued the fight, however, for another four years. Thereafter Basil was known as Bulgaroctonus, the Bulgar-Slayer.16 He witnessed the death of Samuil, Tsar of Bulgaria on 6 October 1014 at Prilep, Macedonia; Basil II of Byzanitum had been a long-time rival. At long last, the tides of war had turned in favor of Basil, and he sent a defeated Bulgarian army of 15,000 men back to Samuel, blind. When Samuel saw the long line of mutilated soldiers return home, it is said he died on the spot of shock.6 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was a witness where Giorgi I, King of the Ap'xaz and of the K'art'velians commanded by the Emperor Basil II to return to the territories given his father out of the Curopalates portion as gift in 1015.15 Basil II Bulgaroctonos, basileus Rhomaiôn was campaigned in north-western Asia, annexing Georgia and the Armenian kingdom of Ani in 1021.
