Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru was the ancestor of William de Braose, 6th Baron of Brecknock; a descendant of Griffith, Prince of Wales.4 Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru was an ancestor of "Black William" de Braose.4 He was born in 1011.5 He was the son of Llywelyn ap Seisyll, King of Gwynedd and Deheubarth and Angharad verch Maredudd o Deheubarth.3 Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru married Guerta of Deheubarth circa 1030; His 1st.6 Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru drove Hywel ap Edwin in flight from the kingdom in 1039 at Deheubarth, Wales.7 He already probably established in Powys, and when Iago ap Idwal of Gwynedd was murdered by his own men, perhaps with Gruffydd as an accomplice, he emerged as the claimant for the northern kingdom in 1039.7 He succeeded Hywell II to the throne of Deheubarth in 1039. He was the first (and only) native king of all of Wales in 1039.8 Prince of Gwynedd at Wales between 1039 and 1063. He fought a hard struggle to make himself ruler of the southern kingdom of Wales, but he was thwarted by two determined kings for fifteen years between 1040 and 1055.7 King of Deheubarth at Wales between 1044 and 1063. He deposed from the Deheubarth kingship in 1046. He married Ealdgyth of Mercia, daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia and Ælfgifu of the Seven Boroughs; His 2nd. Her 1st.3,9,10,11 Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru was restored to the Deheubarth kingship following Griffith II in 1055. He was totally ruthless, his hands stained with the blood of rivals and opponents, but in retrospect his reign was seen as a period of outstanding achievement.7 Chronicle of Ystrad Fflur 1063: "In this year Gruffudd ap Llywelyn was slain, after innumerable victories, through the treachery of his own men. He had been head and shield and protector to the Britons."12 He was a witness where Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Brenin Gwynedd a Powys succeeded as Prince of Gwynedd in 1063. Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru died on 5 August 1063 at age 52 years. Slain in battle while fighting an invading army of Saxons under Earl Harold (later Harold I). He was the last "High King of Wales" when he was killed by the Saxons.5,8 He witnessed the death of Cynan ab Iago, Prince of Gwynedd on 5 August 1063 at Wales; was killed in battle fighting the invading Saxons, led by Earl Harold (later Harold II).

There are lots of uncertainties about these lines, since many records have not survived. Source materials for most things in the medieval Balkans are ususally not from contemporary writers, and the few contemporary sources existing are usually from Byzantine writers, not writers from the various states themselves. The tables I'm about to present are based on Europaeische Stammtafeln, but modified by some recent scholarship by John V. A.
