Thomas Harris was the father of Anna Harris; daughter of Thomas Harris.2 Thomas Harris was at Hatherup, or vicinity, Gloucestershire, England.2 Also called Thomas William In some early records, Thomas uses the double name "Williams alias Harris" or simply the surname "Williams." The reason for this is not known, and his descendants used only Harris, the ancestral surname.2 He was born circa 1590 at Hatherup, or vicinity, Gloucestershire, England.2 He was the son of William Harris and Agnes Mason.2 Thomas Harris married Elizabeth (?) circa 1613 at England; Her 1st.1,2 Thomas Harris emigrated from Bristol, England, leaving 1630; It is suggested that Harris came on the "Lyon," which sailed from Bristol and not from London.3 He immigrated to New England arriving 1630.2 He lived after 1630 at Winnissimet (now Chelsea), Massachusetts; His 1st residence in America.2 He was on the Coroner's jury on the body of William Bateman (as "Thomas Williams") on 18 September 1630 at Massachusetts.2,4 He requested Freemanship as "Thomas Will[ia]ms alias Harris" in October 1630 at Massachusetts.5,2 He died before 1631.1 He was a Ferryman in 1631 at Massachusetts.2 "Tho[mas] Will[ia]ms hath undertaken to set up a ferry betwixt Winnettsem[e]t & Charlton, for which he is to have after 3d. a person, & from Winnettsem[e]t to Boston 4d. a person" on 18 May 1631.2,6 He was admitted as a Freeman on 18 May 1631 at Massachusetts.5,2 He died before 1634. He died prior to 1634, when Stitson took over the ferry between Boston and Winnissimmet.2 Thomas Harris died before land records were maintained, and left no will. He does not appear in the lists of early Charlestown residents, or in Boston records, so it is likely that he supported himself solely by his ferrying operations. Examination of the land records of William Stitson might show that some land was earlier held by Thomas Harris.2 He was related to Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States; the 5th cousin, 7x removed (via Thomas Harris, 1590-1631), of the compiler.

Ghislain Vigne1

b. circa 1586, d. before 1632
Ghislain Vigne was a Walloon. Also called Willem Vinje In the mouths of his Dutch neighbors, this was how his name was pronounced. Also called Guillaume Vigne.2 He was born circa 1586 at Valenciennes, Countship of Hainaut, Kingdom of Holland.2 He married Adrienne Cuville before 1610 at Valenciennes, Countship of Hainaut, Kingdom of Holland.2 The Walloons were French-speaking Protestants from the southern Netherlands region that is now Belgium and northern France. In the 1500's and 1600's it was subjected to protracted wars involving Holland, France and Spain. A 12-year truce beginning in 1609 provided some respite, but the truce was not renewed when it expired in 1621. Another unsettling factor in that region was the desire of the Catholic French monarchy to convert or kill the Protestant population living within and along its borders. Many non-Catholics fled after having their property confiscated. It was then they decided to flee for Holland. Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville immigrated to Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands, arriving before 1623; Fleeing religious persecution in their homeland, they left for the city of Leiden, which was a protective and tolerant haven from war and prejudice. After they began living among the Dutch, the Vigne name was changed to Vienje. Guillaume became known as Willem Vienje and Adrienne as Ariantje Vienje. Ghislain Vigne and Adrienne Cuville were were one of 30 Walloon families selected by the Dutch West India Company to establish a permanent settlement in New Netherlands [New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut] in 1624 at Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands. The original Company plan was to send only five or six men to set up a fur trading post on Manhattan Island. The addition of the Walloon families may have been a late change to the plans. Perhaps the families volunteered when they heard of the colonization plans. After all, the Walloons were a displaced people who had become refugees in crowded little Holland. There was no land available to them - the Dutch had run out of land and had just started to reclaim land from the sea. Ghislain Vigne immigrated to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York, arriving April 1624; The Vignes are believed to have sailed from Holland in April of 1624 on the "Nieuw Nederlandt". Some of the other colonists, including Joris Janszen Rapaelje, were also from Valenciennes. The Vignes had three daughters, Christine, Maria and Rachel, when they sailed to America. Most of the 30 families must have had children, as the total number of new colonists was about 120. Upon reaching the Hudson River in mid-May, they found a French ship that was trying to claim the territory for the king of France. With the help of a smaller Dutch ship that arrived from the West Indies, they politely aimed their cannons and escorted the French ship out to sea. Cornelis May, captain of the "Nieuw Nederlandt," became the first Director of the New Netherlands colony.3 He died before 1632 at New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.2 He was related to Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States; an 8th cousin, 3x removed (via Guillaume Vigne, 1586-1632), of the compiler. Ghislain Vigne was related to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States; the 7th cousin, 3x removed (via Samuel Marshfield, 1625-1692) and 9th cousin, 2x removed (via Guillaume Vigne, 1586-1632), of the compiler.

Thomas Rush was buried in Cranford, Suffolk, England. He died at Cranford, Suffolk, England. Notes for Thomas RussheIII: The following narrative is taken from A.R. Rush's 'Benjamin Rush, M.D. 1745-1813: His Origins and Ancestry,' pp.23-24, 28. The entire text of A.R. Rush was sent to me from Craig Scott, Maidenhead, England on January 23, 1998:
'This Thomas is a vital link connecting the English forebears of Dr. Benjamin with their American descendants, for it was John Rush, the second son of this Thomas, who married at Banbury in 1648 and arrived at Philadelphia as an immigrant in 1683.'
'In the 'Visitation of Essex' made in 1634 and already mentioned elsewhere, Thomas Rush, gentleman, was then alive and resident at Boreham, having married Thomasine (or Thomazin), the daughter of John Stansted of Springfield, Essex. From the complex and interesting 'Last Will and Testament' which he left, it is evident that he had deep affection for his wife. A transcription of this document will be found in Appendix 1.'
'From the parish registers of St. Andrew's Church, Boreham, and from their father's will it has been possible to identify the children of Thomas and Thomasine; they were six in number: Thomas, Thomasine, Jane, Frances, John, and Mary.'
'A strange feature of this Rush family is seen in the entire absence of letters or correspondence of any kind. The context of the various wills herein quoted discloses no evidence of illiteracy in the family. The Thomas Rush will of 1635 allocated sums of money for the 'better maintenance of his sons during childhood and youth. Presumably these moneys were intended for their education, although this is not specifically mentioned; otherwise, one wonders what object the testator could have had in mind at the time.'
'It would have been natural for parents and children to exchange news, more particularly during the anxious times of the [English] Civil War, when both sons were in the fighting. One might also have expected that in a house of the size and importance of the 'Parsonage,' where the financial conditions were easy, a book of household accounts, cooking recipes, or some such items of country life might have survived to furnish intimate family details.'
