He "under went" says Dugdale, "a very hard fate, through the perfidiousness and cruelty of Walter, brother to Milo, Earl of Hereford, his seeming friend, and kinsman by consanguinity, being treacherously seized on, stripped naked, exposed to scorn, put into fetters, and thrice drawn by a rope about his neck, on a gallows, at his own castle gates, with threats that if he would not deliver his castle to the earl, he should suffer a miserable death; and when he was, by the barbarous usage, almost dead, carried to prison, there to endure further tortures." Circa 1141.1

     According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" "The Hugh who held land on so large a scale in 1086, and yet transmitted to his descendants neither a Norman surname nor a name derived from his English aquisitions, but merely a nickname of the rough Norman type [i.e. 'bad transit'], was (it is submitted) most probably a Norman of no distinguished family, but of distinguished service at the Conquest, and rewarded in accordance therewith."1 Hugh Maltravers was born circa 1040 at Normandy. He was joined William the Conqueror in the conquest of England in 1066.1 He held land on a large scale in 1086.1
