Sir Thomas Rush

b. circa 1490, d. 1560
Sir Thomas Rush was Notes for Sir Thomas Russhe: The following information was from an e-mail message sent to me on January 11, 1998 from Craig Scott of Maidenhead, England:
'....The trail led back to Ipswich, Sir Thomas Russhe's home. He was apparently a local politician who had served Henry VII as well as his son Henry VIII. He was a friend of Cardinal Wolsey (Henry VIII's first Lord Chancellor) , survived the fallout from Wolsey's downfall, and attached himself to Wolsey's successor Thomas Cromwell. He was one of the King's sergeants-at-arms, the forerunners of the Yeomen of the Guard ('Beefeaters'); Debrett's Knightage says that he was one of those made a 'Knight of the Bath' as part of the coronation ceremonies of Anne Boleyn. His house in Ipswich survived into this century.'
The following narrative is taken from A.R. Rush's 'Benjamin Rush, M.D. 1745-1813: His Origins and Ancestry,' pp.19, 23. The entire text from A.R. Rush was sent to me from Craig Scott, Maidenhead, England on January 23, 1998:
'Sir Thomas Russhe, Serjeant-At-Arms to King Henry VIII - Although its importance has greatly diminished in more recent times, the office of Serjeant-at-Arms, in personal attendance upon the monarch, was a major one in Tudor days and usually carried lands and honours with it. An early mention shows that one George ffastolf sold the Manor of Kirkley - also known as Kirkley Hall (in Essex) - to one 'Thomas Russhes' in 1510, the sale being effected by a fine levied in Michaelmas Term (2 Henry VIII, Copinger, ed.). In 1533 Thomas was made a knight for his services to the king, according to Metcalfe's 'Knights' and also to the letters and papers of Henry VIII (Gairdner, ed.), as qouted by the Dictionary of National Biography.'
'Sir Thomas does not seem to have spent much time at the Manor, for in Baker's 'Northamptonshire' he is described as being 'of Clapham,' while in Morant's 'Essex' he was said to be 'of Sudborne' (in Suffolk). Further, in Davy's 'Suffolk Collections,' he was described as of 'Chapmans' in Sudborne but living at Ipswich in 1514. Evidently the 'Chapmans' property was retained, for his eldest son Arthur Rush inherited it.'
'Sir Thomas married twice, his first wife being Anne, daughter and heiress of John Rivers of Ipswich. There were six children by this marriage: Arthur, Thomas, Leonard, Anthony, John, and a daughter who married Thomas Aylward of Ipswich. Of these children two, Leonard and John, died without issue, presumably in infancy.'
'The second wife, as stated by Copinger, was 'Christian' (name not known), who later married Thomas Baldry, a gentleman of Ipswich who was bailiff of that town in 1518, 1522, and 1541 (32 Henry VIII). Davy, however, describes Sir Thomas' second wife as 'Christine, relict of Thomas Baldry,' and it is uncertain which of these two conflicting accounts is correct. The fact that Davy also gives the date of Christine's death as 1540 makes further confusion, seeing that Sir Thomas' will was dated twenty years later in 1560. No children of this marriage have been traced.'
'Sir Thomas was made sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1534 (25 Henry VIII) and died at Ipswich in 1560; his remains rest in St. Stephen's Church in that town. He left a will which is recorded at Somerset House and dated 1560 (Sentence 9, Loftus).'. He was born circa 1490 at Sudborne, Suffolk, England. He was knighted for services to the King in 1533. He married Anne Rivers, daughter of John Rivers of Ipswich, before 1537. Sir Thomas Rush died in 1560 at Ipswich, England. Sir Thomas Rush was buried in St. Stephens Church, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
