     Thomas Holbrooke of Weymouth was suggested to be a descendant of Richard Holbrook (d. 1546) of Somersetshire, England. There appear to be two Thomas Holbrooke immigrants to Weymouth, ten years apart in age.3 He was born in 1589 at Glastonbury?, Somerset?, England.4,5 He was the son of William Holbrooke of Edgerley.2 Thomas Holbrooke of Weymouth lived in 1616 at Glastonbury, Somerset, England.6 He married Jane Powyes, daughter of William Powyes and Elizabeth (?), on 12 September 1616 at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Glastonbury, Somerset, England.7,1 Thomas Holbrooke of Weymouth lived after February 1630/31 at Broadway, Somerset, England.6 He emigrated from Weymouth, England, leaving 20 March 1635; Left England aboard the "Marygold" with wife and family, as part of Reverand Hull's Company. On the list of those bound for New England he is identified as "#66 Thomas Holbrooke of Broadway, aged 34 years."8 The group of Reverend Joseph Hull embarks for America. On 20 March 1634/35 at Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, England.9,8 He immigrated to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England, arriving 7 June 1635.10 He lived on 8 July 1635 at Weymouth, Massachusetts; He and his family were among the group allowed to settle in Wessagusset (which became Weymouth in September 1635).10 He was granted 10 acres of land in the First Division in August 1635 at Weymouth, Massachusetts.11 He was witness to the original deed of the Indians of land to the English on 26 April 1642 at "26th 2nd Mo. 1642", Weymouth, Massachusetts.12 He was made townsman (selectman) five times between 1645 and 1654 at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.3,11 He was made a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in May 1645.3,11 He appeared on a list of property owners on 2 February 1651/52 at Weymouth, Massachusetts.13 He was granted 30 acres of land in the Second Division on 14 December 1663 at Weymouth, Massachusetts.11 He made a deposition in which his age was noted as 77 years in November 1666.1 He left a will on 31 December 1668 at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts; "Being sick and weak," he made his will, bequeathing unto his wife Jane, his sons John Holbrooke, William Holbrook, and Thomas Holbrook, and unto his daughters Anne Reynolds, Elizabeth Hatch, and Jane Drake, and unto his grandchildren John Holbrook, Peter Holbrook, and William Holbrook, and to all his grandchildren that shall be living at his wife Jane's death, his property. He said that his grandson Peter had served him and his wife in their old age for about eight years, for which he was to have his dwelling house in Weymouth with the orchard and the arable land.11,3,14 He wrote a codicil on 31 December 1673 at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.3,14 He died on 10 March 1677 at Weymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 88 years.3,15 His estate was probated on 24 April 1677 at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.16 He was the ancestor of U.S. Presidents Garfield, Bush, and Taft (the latter through three lines).3 He was a witness where Jane Powyes the ancestor of U.S. Presidents Garfield, Bush, and Taft (the latter through three lines).3 Thomas Holbrooke of Weymouth was related to James Abram Garfield, 20th President of the United States; the 7th cousin, 4x removed (via Thomas Holbrooke Sr., 1599-1677), of the compiler.
