     Also called Louis Alexander, Prince of Battenburg.³ Louis Alexander of Battenberg, Marquess of Milford Haven was born on 24 May 1854 at Graz, Austria.³ He was the son of Prinz Alexander Ludwig Georg Friedrich Emil and Julia Theresa von Hauke, Countess of Battenberg.² Louis Alexander of Battenberg, Marquess of Milford Haven was naturalized as a British subject when he entered the Royal Navy in 1868.³ He married Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie, daughter of Ludwig IV, Großherzog von Hesse-Darmstadt and Alice Maud Mary of England, on 30 April 1884 at Darmstadt, Germany; 1st cousins, 1x removed.⁴ Louis Alexander of Battenberg, Marquess of Milford Haven was forced to resign as first sea lord because of his German birth on 29 October 1914.³ He was relinquished his German titles at the request of King George V, assumed the surname of Mountbatten, and was created marquess of Milford Haven on 17 July 1917.³ He died on 11 September 1921 at London, England, at age 67 years, 3 months and 18 days.¹

     Judge. Hon. William Calvin Smock was born on 30 December 1838 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.² He was the son of Isaac C. Smock and Ann T. Smock. Hon. William Calvin Smock married Melissa Ann Smock, daughter of Jacob Smock and Frances Ann Colley, on 6 December 1860 at Marion County, Indiana.² Hon. William Calvin Smock was Wrote a letter to John Conover Smock. (See Genealogical Notes) in 1900. He died before 1922.

     Elmer Ellsworth Smock was born in 1861 at Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio. He was the son of John Matthew Smock and Mary Virginia Russell. Elmer Ellsworth Smock married Cora Ellen Davis, daughter of John Davis and Chloinda Short, on 1 May 1896; by Ephraim Teal. Elmer Ellsworth Smock and Cora Ellen Davis were had two other children lost in miscarriages, for thirteen children total after 1897.      Finley McKinnon Smock was born on 18 February 1844 at Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana. He was the son of Rev. David Van Cleave Smock and Margaret Ann Brown. Finley McKinnon Smock was an apprentice in a wagon shop and was mastering this useful branch of mechanics when the call to arms sounded through the land, calling on all loyal citizens to throw down the implements used in peaceful pursuits, to shoulder a musket in support of our flag and country in 1859. He was so described in 1861: being five foot nine and half inches tall, dark complexioned, grey eyes, and brown hair. He began military service in June 1861 enlisting in Company F, Fifth Iowa Infantry volunteers, and serving under Capt. E. S. Sampson and Col. C. L. Matthies in that organization for more than three years. He was badly wounded at Champion Hills, Miss., May 16, 1863, shot through both thighs by a musket ball. In August, 1864, with other members of his company, he was transferred to Company G, Fifth Iowa Cavalry volunteers, under Capt. J. M. Limbocker and Col. W. W. Lowe. He ended military service in August 1865; he finished his service in the war with his participating in Gen. J. H. Wilson's last cavalry raid of the war in Alabama and Georgia, then mustering out of service (with Army Pension Record Certificate No. 112585). He was back again at the wagon shop, becoming a wagon maker between August 1865 and 1877 at Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa. He married Mary Elizabeth Stranahan, daughter of Alexander Stranahan and Elizabeth Allen, on 31 December 1867 at Signourey, Keokuk County, Iowa. Finley McKinnon Smock was elected Deputy Postmaster, and moved his family into the post office building in 1882 at Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa. He was the clerk of the district court of Keokuk county with the republican party between 1894 and 1902. He was secretary for the Firm of Singmaser & Sons, importers of draft horses between 1900 and 1921. He was engaged with a real estate practice after 1902. He died on 19 March 1922 at Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa, at age 78 years, 1 month and 1 day. Dying of a stroke shortly after his retirement. Finley McKinnon Smock was buried in Keota Cemetery, Keota, Keokuk County, Iowa.

     Her married name was Smock. Catherine Elizabeth Beekman was born on 1 January 1848. She was the daughter of Abram J. Beekman and Catherine Schoonmaker. Catherine Elizabeth Beekman married John Conover Smock, son of Isaac G. Smock and Ellen Conover, on 15 October 1874. Catherine Elizabeth Beekman died on 12 May 1922 at age 74 years, 4 months and 11 days.

     Amos R. Stalcup was born on 14 February 1847 at Greene County, Indiana.² He was the son of Stephen W. Stalcup and Sarah Ann Smock.

Stalcup relocated to Daviess County, Indiana, circa July 1869. He was selling mercantile goods on commission after 1878. "Three years later he began selling goods on his own responsibility, and has continued at that work ever since. In addition to the duties of his store, he looks after his shop and speculates in grain."¹ He married Nancy J. Crooke, daughter of Jesse Crooke and Priscilla (?), on 28 October 1879 at Davies County, Indiana; His 3rd.^6,7 Amos R. Stalcup married Sarah R. (?) before 1900. Amos R. Stalcup died on 12 April 1923 at Indiana at age 76 years, 1 month and 29 days.

     Also called Sarah Ann Reeder. In my quest for my Sarah Ann Readers identity I stumbled onto a lot of coincidences on two Sarah Ann Reader/Reeders. She died in Lake City, Michigan, a town founded by Reeders. The Reeders came from Pennsylvania, spending a generation in Canada, then coming to Michigan. In the same township in Canada as the Reeders was a William Philp, of Cornwall, and of the right age to marry Sarah Ann, a daughter of Moses Reeder Jr, born in Canada. It turns out not to be the case. Sarah Ann Reader was related to Lydia Almedia Philp; born to a father born in Canada (English) and a mother born in Ohio.⁶ Sarah Ann Reader was born on 21 February 1841 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Per her declaration made 20 Sep 1916.^7,8,9,4 She was the daughter of Sergeant Joseph Reader and Cynthia Lucinda Thayer.^2,3,4,5

On 19 July 1850, Sarah Ann Reader was enumerated with Sergeant Joseph Reader on the census at 1st Ward, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Details provided: Sarah Ann Reader, age 9, born in Ohio.¹⁰

Sarah Ann Reader was left an orphan at age thirteen after her mother and father died of Cholera within two days in 1854 at Cleveland, Ohio.^11,4 She made her home with her uncle, Ashel Thayer, for some time after her parents death in 1854. She later went to live with a brother in Rome, New York.⁴ She witnessed the death of Sergeant Joseph Reader in August 1854 at Cleveland, Ohio; He died in the Cholera epidemic.¹¹ Sarah Ann Reader witnessed the death of Cynthia Lucinda Thayer on 13 August 1854 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; She died in a Cholera epidemic.^12,13 Sarah Ann Reader married Cpl. Thomas Kinrade, son of N. N. Kinrade, on 6 November 1860 at Warrensville, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Per her declaration to obtain a widow's pension on his service.^14,15 Sarah Ann Reader taught school in rural districts between 1861 and 1862.⁴ As of 9 January 1863, Sarah Ann Reader lived at East Cleveland, Ohio; address as given on the pension application, no. 1646, from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, DC. She was appeared before a probate judge to obtain a widow's pension on 28 March 1863 at Newburgh, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She married William H. Philp, son of John Hamilton Philp and Harriet Huddleston, on 10 March 1864 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Her 2nd (Civil War widow).^16,17 Sarah Ann Reader and William H. Philp moved by wagon to what is now the city of Mt. Pleasant in 1866.¹⁸ Sarah Ann Reader was a dress maker and miliner.¹⁸

On 1 June 1880, Sarah Ann Reader was enumerated with William H. Philp on the census at Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan, Details provided: "Wife, age 39, born in Ohio, Keeping House, father born in Connecticut, mother born in Vermont."^20,21

Sarah Ann Reader home schooled between 1882 and 1883.¹⁸ She relocated to Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan, after 5 September 1882. She relocated to Missaukee County where her daughter Hattie had contracted to teach and continued teaching until about 55 years of age in 1884.¹⁸ She reapplied for the pension from Thomas Kinrade's service once William had died on 26 June 1890 at Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan. "The object of the inquiry was to see if I could be reinstated on the pension rolls as it seems unfair that women that were children at the time of the war and knew none of it's heart-breaking horrors should be getting a pension and I who gave my all at that time get none. Yours truly, Sarah A. Philp" She was reinstated therewith. She was a Housekeeper in June 1900 at Reeder Township, Missaukee County, Michigan.⁶

On 10 April 1910, Sarah Ann Reader was Head of Household on the census at Lake City, Reeder Township, Missaukee County, Michigan, Details provided: Philp, Mrs. Sarah A., age 68, widow, 10 children born, 5 surviving, born in Ohio, father born in Connecticut, mother born in Vermont..²³

She applied for an increase to her pension (per the Act of 8 Sep 1916) on 20 September 1916 at Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan.

On 24 January 1920, Sarah Ann Reader was Head of Household on the census at Reeder Township, Missaukee County, Michigan, Details provided: Philp, Sarah A., Head, 78 years old, born in Ohio, father born in Connecticut, mother born in Vermont..²⁴

She lived on 10 May 1923 at Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan; This info from the back of a photo, said she was living in Lake City, and that her name was Sarah Ann Kinrade, then Kinrade overwritten with Reader, Kinrade Philp.... Sarah Ann Reader Kinrade Philp, born at Cleveland, OH Feb 21, 1841, living still at Lake City, Mich May 10, 1923. She died on 23 December 1923 at Missaukee County, Michigan, at age 82 years, 10 months and 2 days. She died at the home of her daughter, Hattie Vanderheide, near Marion.⁴ Sarah Ann Reader was buried in the Vernon Cemetery, Vernon Township, Isabella County, Michigan.²⁵ " The 1923 obituary of Sarah Ann Philp states that her parents were Joseph and Cynthia Reader, who was daughter of Levi Thayer, a veteran of the War of 1812."²⁶ She was dropped from the Pension Roll (last payment was $30.00 made on 4 Dec 1923) on 12 January 1924 at RR4 Box 65, Marion, Michigan.²⁷ She was a witness where Harriet Emily Philp moved into her mother's home and continued teaching in 1926 at Lake City, Michigan.²⁸

     Elizabeth Mason was born on 1 October 1844 at Massachusetts.¹ She married Robert Charles Winthrop Jr., son of Robert Charles Winthrop, US Representative from Massachusetts and Elizabeth Cabot Blanchard, on 1 June 1869.¹ Elizabeth Mason died on 22 April 1924 at Boston, Massachusetts, at age 79 years, 6 months and 21 days.¹

     Frank J. Conover was born on 29 April 1872. He and Florence Conover were were twins.. Frank J. Conover was the son of John B. Conover and Mary Ann Smock. Frank J. Conover married Grace Huxford on 10 October 1903. Frank J. Conover died on 7 May 1924 at New York City, Kings County, New York, at age 52 years and 8 days.

     Mary Catherine Sebern was born on 17 February 1845 at Southport, Marion County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Samuel S. Sebern and Rachel R. Smock. As of 23 December 1869,her married name was Meakins. Mary Catherine Sebern married Henry Meakins on 23 December 1869 at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa. Mary Catherine Sebern died on 12 July 1924 at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa, at age 79 years, 4 months and 25 days.

     Dewey Vernon Dougherty was born on 7 July 1910 at Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. He was the son of Sherman Albert Dougherty and Winifred Mable Smock. Dewey Vernon Dougherty died on 30 July 1924 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at age 14 years and 23 days. Of blood poisoning.

     Thomas Smock was born on 14 November 1841 at Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana. He was the son of Jacob Smock and Mary de Mott. Thomas Smock appeared on the census of 2 August 1860 in the household of Jacob Smock at Big Grove Township, Benton County, Iowa; Microfilm reel# M 653-311, pg # 143; Enumeration Date - 2nd Aug 1860 - line #s 2-6, household # 1140, family # 1034, Jacob is a farmer, with a real value of 6,821, personal value of 9,032, and born in Kentucky. Thomas Smock married Mary C. Sebern circa 1863 at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa. Thomas Smock died on 9 March 1925 at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, at age 83 years, 3 months and 23 days.

     Representative William Jennings Bryan was a representative from Nebraska.¹ He was a claimed relative/ancestor of Margaret Hollinshead, the half-sister of my grandmother. He was born on 19 March 1860 at Salem, Marion County, Illinois.¹ He died on 26 July 1925 at Dayton, Tennessee, at age 65 years, 4 months and 7 days. He died while attending court.¹ Representative William Jennings Bryan was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Meyer, Virginia.¹

     Named William Andrew. As 2nd son, should be named for his mother's father, per Gaelic tradition. His cousin, the first son of his uncle Daniel, was given the name Andrew James, for Andrew Graham and James Stewart? We could assume that Andrew was his mother Jane's father, and there was indeed an Andrew in the same township at the time. (I was right!).¹ William Andrew Stewart was born in May 1858 at Ontario, Canada.^2,3 He was the son of John Stewart Sr. and Jane Graham.

     Also called Alexandra Caroline Marie Charlotte Louise Julie.¹ Princess Alexandra of Denmark was born on 1 December 1844 at Copenhagen, Denmark.¹ She was the daughter of Christian IX, King of Denmark.² Princess Alexandra of Denmark married Edward VII, King of Great Britain, son of Prince Consort Albert Saxe-Coburg-Gotha K.G. and Victoria, Königin von Großbritannien, Kaiserin von Indien, on 10 March 1863 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, England.¹ Princess Alexandra of Denmark died on 20 November 1925 at Sandringham, England, at age 80 years, 11 months and 19 days.¹

     Thomas Linton Rush Jr. lived; Clairborne County, MS. He was born on 24 August 1862. He was the son of Thomas Linton Rush and Sarah Jane Goza. Thomas Linton Rush Jr. married Mary Adellia Kelly in 1881. Thomas Linton Rush Jr. died on 28 December 1925 at age 63 years, 4 months and 4 days.

     John Conover Smock was SMOCK, John Conover, geologist, was born in Holmdel, N.J., Sept. 21, 1842; son of Isaac G. and Ellen (Conover) Smock; grandson of George and Margaret (Van Deventer) Smock, and of John and Ann (Smock) Conover, and a descendant of Hendrick Matthyse Smock, the progenitor of the Smock family in this country, who settled in New Utrecht, Long Island, in 1654. He was graduated from Rutgers in 1862, and became a tutor in chemistry there, 1862–67. He was elected professor of mining and metallurgy in 1867, and studied at the Berg Academic and the University of Berlin, 1869–70. He was married, Oct. 15, 1874, to Catherine Elizabeth, daughter of Abram J. and Catherine (Schoonmaker) [p.334] Beekman, of Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a member of the faculty at Rutgers, 1871–85. He was assistant on the geological survey, 1864–85; assistant in charge of the New York state museum, 1885; and state geologist of New Jersey, 1890–01. He received the honorary degree of Ph.D. from Lafayette in 1881, and that of LL.D. from Rutgers, in 1902. He was made a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; of the American Public Health association; the Geological Society of America, of the American Philosophical society, and a member of the board of managers of the geological survey of New Jersey. "Earl Hollinshead, upon going to his father's room Wednesday morning, found the elderly gentleman unconscious and although all that medical aid or loving hands could do, was of no avail as he passed away at 12:30 p.m. on the same day without regaining consciousness." Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the home, with the burial afterwards at the family cemetery. "A large cortage of old friends gathered at the Hollinshead home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon to pay their respects to the memory of their friend and neighbor, Daniel Hollinshead." Rev. Hyde of Spring Valley Presbyterian spoke consoling words and Mrs. J. K. Lorenzen sweetly sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Crossing the Bar." Those who attended the casket were C. W. Hanson, W. G. Lawrence, N. D. Pape, D. C. Waite, Cornell Smith, and Clarence Pierce, all old friends and neighbors."⁴

     Sarah J. Sebern was born on 29 October 1850 at Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Samuel S. Sebern and Rachel R. Smock. As of 23 November 1871,her married name was Richart. Sarah J. Sebern married Jackson Richart on 23 November 1871 at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa. Sarah J. Sebern died on 26 August 1926 at Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado, at age 75 years, 9 months and 28 days.

     Jennie E. Richardson was born on 15 September 1875 at Calkinsville, Michigan. She was the daughter of Oscar M. Richardson and Christina Olive Stewart. Jennie E. Richardson appeared on the census of June 1880 in the household of Oscar M.      Also called Harry. Henry Wills was born in 1853 at New Jersey. He was the son of Joseph C. Wills and Sarah Evans Rush. Henry Wills married Susan A. Jones on 21 August 1871 at Camden County, New Jersey. Henry Wills died in 1927 at Oregon at age 74 years.

     Mary Jane Hoover was born in July 1850 at Wapello County, Iowa.² She was the daughter of Sixth Corporal Henry B. Hoover and Eliza E. Fenner.¹

     William L. Smock was born circa 1860. He was the son of John Matthew Smock and Mary Virginia Russell. William L. Smock died circa 1928.

     Stephen Allen Flint was born on 1 September 1860 at Edgar County, Illinois. He was the son of William Abner Flint and Elizabeth Jane Smock. Stephen Allen Flint married (?) Wilcox on 16 June 1883. Stephen Allen Flint died on 31 January 1928 at age 67 years, 4 months and 30 days.

     Harriet Hill also went by the name of Hattie. Her married name was Smith. She was born on 22 August 1870. She was the daughter of Thomas B. Hill and Huldah Queener. Harriet Hill married Leroy Martin Smith, son of Eli Smith and Julia Ann Tuttle, on 22 November 1886 at the post office by a Justice of the Peace, Kendrick, Idaho; With the death of Leroy's mother, his homestead rights were in danger. Being 20, and Hattie, the lady he had courted, 16, they married. Harriet Hill died on 24 March 1928 at age 57 years, 7 months and 2 days.      Quincy Lloyd Slocumb was born on 16 March 1858 at Albany Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.¹ He married Eudora E. Hollinshead, daughter of Daniel Hollinshead and Mary L. Knight, on 28 June 1883 at Whiteside County, Illinois.^2,3 Quincy Lloyd Slocumb died on 10 September 1928 at Walsenburg, Colorado, at age 70 years, 5 months and 25 days.¹ Quincy Lloyd Slocumb was buried in St. Louis, Missouri. Funeral services were held at the family home on Thursday afternoon. The Rev. L. V. Slocumb officiated. Quincy Lloyd Slocumb was buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Albany, Whiteside County, Illinois. The funeral cortage left Missouri and motored to Ustick Township on Friday where the body rested in the Hollinshead homestead until Saturday morning. The brother, Rev. L. C. Slocumb officiated. Bearers of the casket were J. C. Slocumb, the Rev. L. V. Slocumb, W. L. Slocumb, Dr. Leith Slocumb, Lloyd Slocumb, and Earl Hollinshead. Present at the funeral, among others, was W. G. Lawrence.⁴

     Matilda Jane Forester was born on 30 April 1866. She was the daughter of J. P. Forester and Samantha Jane Wallace. Matilda Jane Forester died on 19 October 1928 at age 62 years, 5 months and 19 days.

     William 'Otto' Thompson was born circa 1888. He married Margaret Myrtle May Hollinshead, daughter of George Leland Hollinshead and Adelia Nancy Fisk, in 1918. William 'Otto' Thompson died in 1929. Margaret mentions Otto's death as 1929 in a newspaper article in which she was talking about her family. It was during WWII as both children, Peggy and Billy were serving in the Armed Forces.

     María Cristina Deseada Enriqueta Felicidad Raniera de Habsburgo-lorena was born on 21 July 1858 at Gross Seelowitz, Austria.¹ She died on 6 February 1929 at Madrid, Spain, at age 70 years, 6 months and 16 days.¹

     Ella Waddell married Frederick Graham Nichols, son of John Learn Nichols and Anna Maria Stewart, on 7 May 1906. As of 7 May 1906,her married name was Nichols. Ella Waddell died on 21 April 1929.

     Virginia Frances Smock was born on 29 August 1846 at Acton, Marion County, Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Jacob Smock and Frances Ann Colley.¹ As of 22 March 1866,her married name was Tuttle.¹ Virginia Frances Smock married William Henry Harrison Tuttle, son of Thomas Tuttle and Elizabeth Anderson, on 22 March 1866 at Marion County, Indiana.¹ Virginia Frances Smock died on 7 May 1929 at Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana, at age 82 years, 8 months and 8 days.¹
