Lydia Wright was born in 1655 at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. She was the daughter of Sergt. Peter Wright Sr. and Alice Way.1 Lydia Wright witnessed the will of Anthony Wright on 20 May 1673 at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.2 Lydia Wright followed Margaret Brewster into South Church, protesting the requirement about taking an oath of fidelity to the Government, for the Quakers prohibited such swearing, on 8 July 1677 at Boston, Massachusetts.3 She was committed to prison for her protest on 9 July 1677 at Boston, Massachusetts.3 She was tried and prosecuted, with three other women, for her Quaker beliefs by the New England Court on 4 August 1677 at Boston, Massachusetts. Her concluding words were "I believe thou speakest truth, for if you worshipped that God which we worship, you would not persecute his people, for we worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the same God that Daniel worshipped.'' The clerk read their sentence as follows:
"Margaret Brewster, you are to have your clothes stript off to the middle, and to be tied to a cart's-tail at the South meeting-house, and to be drawn through the town, and to receive twenty stripes upon your naked body."
"Lydia Wright and Mary Miles, you are to be tied to the cart's-tail also. Barbara Bowers you are to be tied also."3,4,5
She endured this disgraceful sentence with Margaret Brewster, two martyr-friends, on 9 August 1677 at Boston, Massachusetts. They then shook the dust of Boston streets from their feet, and travelled back to Sandwich. They went thence to Rhode Island, that little State in the "corner" of New-England, where the Quaker was looked upon with more toleration, where there was no persecution for conscience' sake, and where Religious Freedom found a safe retreat.3 She was given a certificate to pass the winter with the Quaker settlement in the West Indies on 30 December 1682 at 10th month, the Quarterly Meeting, Flushing, Long Island, New York.3 She married Isaac Horner of Northampton, son of Bartholomew Horner Sr. and Bridget (?), on 17 March 1683/84 at the Meeting House, Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.1,2,3 Lydia Wright witnessed the will of Alice Way on 22 April 1685 at 2nd month, Oyster Bay, New York, America; "In the name of God, Amen. I, Alice Crabb, of Oyster Bay, leave to my daughter Lydia Horner, the shares of meadow, adjoining the medow once of Nicholas Simkins, in the Town meadow. And two shares by the will of my brother-in-law Anthony Wright. I leave to my daughter Mary Andres, and my grandchild, Job Townsend, all my land and meadow at the South, and at the Plains, all which did belong to my brother Anthony Wright. I leave to my granddaughter Alice Townsend, one little iron pot and pewter plate. My negro man is to be free, but he has to pay oe 4 to Simon Cooper and James Townsend for the use of my grandson Job Townsend. I leave to my three sons Gideon Wright, Jacob Wright, and Adam Wright, 5 shillings each. I make my two sons-in-law Samuel Andrews and Isaac Horner executors."6,2 Lydia Wright and Isaac Horner of Northampton resettled in October 1685 at New Jersey.3 She and her sister Mary, with their families, sold out their possessions in Oyster Bay and migrated to New Jersey. In October 1685.
