Queries and Surname Searches

There are several web pages where you can post a query to show that you are researching a particular surname, and search the queries left by other genealogists. Here are a few that you should visit:

My guestbook is read by most visitors to my web site. To make sure it is accessible to search engines, I download the entries every two months or so, convert them to permanent web pages, add the appropriate "meta tags" so that the search engines can find them, and then I upload the web pages to my web site. (Links to old guestbook pages are located at the bottom of this page).
You can leave a message in my guestbook, and perhaps somebody will respond.... It has happened several times

Norway message board from Rootsweb is the largest and best Norwegian message board.  If you have any queries about your Norwegian ancestors surf on over to this message board and leave a message.  You will probably get a response within 1 or 2 days!

Slektsbiblioteket Queries is a new and very promising Norway query page. Like GenConnect, it is also broken down by geographic region.

[email protected] mailing list archives is an often overlooked resource. You can search the archive to find out if others are researching the same families or places in Norway, and then contact them.

Norske Slektsforskere - a registry of Norwegian genealogists, sorted geographically, with links to the the person's home page (or e-mail address for those who do not have a home page). (Only available in Norwegian, but it is easy to use - just click your way to the county of your choice). Unfortunately it is not being updated at the present time, but it is still worthwhile to take a look!

Slektsforskerbasen is another Norwegian registry of genealogists. It is in Norwegian only, but if you go to Registrerte forskere i Slektforskerbasen you can click on the fylke (county) that you are interested in, and scroll down the page - the genealogists are sorted by 'kommune' (municipality) that they are doing research in. This registry will be moving to a new url soon, and it appears that it is not accepting new registrations at this time. Once it has moved, I will update the link and provide information on how to register yourself on this web site (if they still have not provided an English version of their registration page).

There are also several online databases with large collections of names and family trees that have been submitted. Some of these charge a fee for you to search their files, but the following do not:

Ancestral file from the Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS - Mormons) - 45 million+ names! Includes the International Genealogical Index and more.

Ancestry World Tree 25 million+ names from ancestry.com!

Worldconnect Project at Rootsweb.com - 20 million+ names!

Roots Surname List Name Finder is a listing of over 230,000 surnames submitted by over 29,000 genealogists. Enter a surname and a list of people researching that surname will be returned. You can also access this list at this web page. If you want to learn more about RootsWeb you can visit the RootsWeb Home page and the Roots Surname List (RSL) web page.

Online Genealogical Database Index contains links to a large number of genealogical databases searchable through the Web.

US GenWeb Project allows you to post a query on the GenWeb page for the state and county that your ancestor lived in!

GenDex is a project that links genealogy web pages across the world. It includes an index of several hundred World Wide Web databases containing genealogical data for over one million individuals.

GeneaNet is another searchable genealogy database. A great place to visit!

The Computerized Ancestor is a computerized index to the 34 year collection of William A. Yates and the Yates Publishing Company: family group sheets, pedigree charts, old letters, Bible records, wills, and manuscript genealogies. There are literally millions of names in this collection!

Cyndi Howell's Search Sites is a list of other web pages where you can search for your surnames and leave a query! In addition, make sure you check the links on her Queries page!

OLD ENTRIES IN MY GUESTBOOK

As mentioned above, old entries in my guestbook are uploaded to my web site as web pages. (I did not do this from January 1999 to September 2002, so there is a gap in the entries).

Read old guestbook entries:

Please notify me of any links that are not working
properly as well as any suggestions for additional links.

Unfortunately my schedule does not permit me to answer
individual requests for assistance with genealogy research
