Comments: Searching for Hans HANSEN family, about 1840 to 1865 period. Lived on NESHEIM farm near Granvin, Hardanger region, SONDRE BERGENHUUS. Hans and wife Bertha Losdahl and at least one child Nels, born Aug. 21, 1848, emigrated to LaCrosse, WI around 1860 to 1865 and settled into a farm. Nels married another Norwegian, named Caroline Semmingsen in 1866. They moved to Lanesboro, MN and farmed one mile north of town, and raised seven daughters and lost one infant son. Caroline died in 1913 and Nels died in 1928 both in Lanesboro. All seven daughters returned for Nels funeral in Lanesboro. He was a very popular man in the area. Trying to find any siblings and their roots in Norway, and any other family there.

Comments: I have a heritage of Norwegian descents- both paternal and maternal on my father's side. My grandmother's family migrated from Norway and so did my grandfather's family... I know that my grandmother's family held the name of Johanessen- her grandfather had a twin, and he remained in Norway. Because of his marriage the family name in Norway became Sleutten...My grandfather's family on my father's side originated from a town in Norway of Hero. I would love to connect with anyone knowledgeable of the history of my family- or with anyone who shares my desire to understand the Norwegian way of life.

The Brgger name is found in many towns and cities in Norway. Tromso, Dverberg, Hafslo, Oslo, and many others. It seems my ancestors had itchy feet. The name is believed to be German, but came to Norway via Denmark.

Comments: Hello, I am looking for relatives in Norway. My great-grandparents came from Norway to the U.S. in the early 1920's. I do not know their first names, but their last name was Dragland and my grandfathers' name was Birger Dragland. He was the youngest in the family. His mother (my great-grandmother) had been married once before. We don't know to whom. My great-grandfather worked on a boat for a man who started the WallGreen Drug Stores, who then got my great-granfather to move to the U.S. I know that they left many of the family in Norway. We think they moved from a town called Brennesann (incorrect spelling). At least that is what we think. I know this is sketchy but if anyone has any information please, don't hesitate to e-mail me. We are desperate to find our roots. My grandfather was two years old when they left Norway. Thank you so much, Rosemary Dragland Dickinson

Comments: I'm trying to trace my lineage from Tostig Jarl and Kotil Krok and the battle of Stanford Bridge of 1066 to Paal Erickson (m) Sigrid Haareksdatter. Areas of Norway of interest (besides the entire country) include Valdres, Gladhaug in Baegnadalen, Dolven, Tollefsrud, Bagn (church), Sor-Aurdal (church). There are references in our family history to 'the Holera Creek flowing into the Begna River, about 6 miles south of Bagn'; 'westwards from the river Begna into the hills of Seterbygda'. Family names include Oyhus, Tronhus, Haugen, Arnessen. Sigrid is a female name that is prominent in the family around that time. The family began immigrating to the US in 1850's. Most settled in Wisconsin (particularly Dane and Iowa County), some in Minnesota, and a few in Utah (where they converted to the Mormon religion). The plague left a gap in the history from around 1300, but the family line picks up again around 1550 where some court records document that the family still lived and owned the homesteads. I'm particularly interested in a familial connection between Tostig Jarl (Earl of Northumbria) through his son, Kotil Krok, to the daughter (Elfrida) of Fergus, Lord of Galloway (Scottish). Elfrida marrial Olaf the Red (the son of Godred Crowen (King of Man from 1079-1095 d. 1103) who also fought at the battle of Stanford bridge with Tostig Jarl. Godred was the son of Harold the Black, Chief of Iceland. The union of Olaf and Elfrida produced Ragnhildis who was married in 1140 to Sommerled, the Chief of Argyle (d 1164). Sommerled's father(?), Gillebride was of Celtic nationality and married a blue eyed Norse (of nobel birth). Sommerled and Ragnhildis son, Reginald, became King of the Isles and Lord of Argyle-Kintyre. Reginald married Fenia, sister of Randolph, Earl of Morrey. Their son, Roderick-Ruuie of Ruto and Carmodia, married and sired Dugal Roderickson, Vice King of the Suderoys in the Hebrides (1200-1268). Dugal married and sired Erik Dugalson. Erik was the Norwegian King's standard bearer and was given the farm Erikstad in Bagn. Erik married and sired Paal Erikson. Paal married Sigrid Haareksdatter. Their son, Knight Lodin Narveson, was given the large Delven estate in 1346. This estate included 60 farms, all owned by members of the Paal Erickson family.

Comments: Our family is from Lken farm in Olden, Nordfjord. My grandfather, Gabriel Loken, immigrated to the US in 1889 and settled on the farm where I grew up. My relatives (from my Grandfather's brothers lineage - Rasmus Loken) have researched our family quite extensively, with help from relatives in Norway. I have met two of our cousins at a family reunion held last year at Devils Lake, ND. Feel free to contact me if you are related to our wing of the family. My great-grandparents from Norway were Valdemar and Johanne. Valdemar was a RASMUSSEN and was from Flaten at Olden and Johanne was SALAMONSDAUGHTHER, they lived on the family farm. Johanne's brother Ola continued to farm at Lken. Those who followed Valdemar and Johanne all were referred to as Lken.

Comments: Pleased to have found your web page. Being new with computer internetting, etc. I have hopes now that I'll be able to trace relatives in Norway. I was born in Superior, Wisconsin shortly after my mother came to the US. She and Dad were from Sognefjord...Nessane. Both grandfathers were from Lonne in Lonnefjord. Their names were changed, per custom, to Gjerde and Tennefoss. This makes tracing very difficult. But using your method I shall give it try. I do know there are Lonnes living in North Dakota and Minnesota...don't know them at all, but believe some may be distant cousins.

Feb. 8, 1830) who emigrated to America with children Martha, Olianne and Peder in May of 1864. They were members of the church at Stiklestad. I believe Johannes father was Peder PEDERSEN TRYGSTAD who owned a farm in the VERDAL area of NORD-TRONDELAG. Guruanna's parents were Ole HANSSEN JERMSTAD (b. 1786) and Anne JAKOBSDATTER JERMSTAD (b. 1797), also from the VERDAL area. I have information that the TRYGSTAD and JERMSTAD farms were destroyed by avalanche May 19, 1893 along with much loss of life (130 deaths?). There is supposedly a monument at the site. Any information about the exact location of the TRYGSTAD and JERMSTAD farms and members of the family still in Norway would be appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: I am the grandson of Elling Svengaard, b. 23 June 1877, at Skougvold, Norway. Elling emigrated to the US with his family in 1884. His father, Bertinus Anton Ellingsen Svengaard, was deceased following a logging accident at Eau Claire, WI, on 5 May 1891. Anton's mother, Elen Anna, nee Ellingsdatter, probably was deceased during the Atlantic crossing. Anton's father probably pre-deceased the 1884 emigration.

My great-grandfather was born in Svelvika, Norway on June 5,1860. His parents and siblings are unknown to us at this time. We would love to find out who they were. My great-grandmother was born in Osoya, Lillesand, Norway on October 30,1862. Her parents and siblings are also unknown and we would love to find them and any descendents. My grandfather came to the United States around 1913. He fought in both World Wars, but when he went to sign up for social security, he was denied because he was not a U.S. citizen. He finally became a citizen and collected social security. My father, Russell Andrew Carlsen would really like to be contacted by any descendents of his grandfather, Carl Johan Carlson. I know I spelled Carlson with an O, but I was told that when they went through Ellis Island and were registered, their name was spelled this way. My father's surname is spelled as 'Carlsen', the proper norwegian way due to a typo on his birth certificate. My grandparents did not correct it as it was the proper spelling for his ancestry. All of my aunts and uncles have theirs spelled with the O. My father's address is: Russell A. Carlsen P.O. Comments: Our family, known variously as Rorset, Roersette, Rorsette, Rorsette, and and Rodsater (not sure of the origin, possibly Rkoryrr which means "stone pile" or others think it orginated from Sater meaning a "summer home" in the mountains) bought and moved to a farm outside of Oslo in 1603 and as of 1969, we under- stand my grandfather's uncle still owned it, going from father to son, etc. We now spell the name Rodsater, although an earlier spelling, "Rodsetter", was a lot easier on the tongue for others pronouncing it as I grew up. The farm once fell into the hands of the Mundahl family. A relative later married it back into the Rodsater fold. Mundahl was famous in American policitcs, although generally unknown, as the Mundahl's in America, for whatever reasons, changed the spelling to Mondale, and one Walter Mondale was Vice-President of the U.S., and according to an article I read a number of years ago, visited the family farm on a visit to Norway. There are not many Rodsaters left. I've never married (but haven't given up exactly)...my brother had all girls, but one Rodsater, Jon, in Peoria, Illinois allegedly has a son, who apparently will be the only, as far as we can tell, to carry on the old family name. Anyone who knows any other Rodsaters...please contact me. We believe that anybody with the name Rodater certainly is related to us. Also, we are related to what we think is a rather renown artist/sculptor named M. Skeibrok, who we understand might even have a sculpture in the square of Oslo. I have a book though that seems to show Skieibrok as the author, with another, a man named Th. Kittelsen who seems to have done all the illustrations, although at the very end of the book (all in Norwegian) is a drawing of an old woman, signed by Skeibrok. The book was published in Kristiania in 1891, and titled "Sandfaerdige Skroner". Don't read Norwegian...pehaps someone could give me a clue to what it is all about, and is this relative of mine fairly well-known? Thanks! Dave

Comments: I am researching my family name and have had a fair amount of sucess to date because of some distant relatives I have met through the Internet. I have two family mysteries to solve: My great-grandfather was Johannes Ingebritsen KINDEN who married Emma Ingeborg BORSLI (BURSLEY) in 1892 near Lake Mills, IA. When John died in 1925, there was no obituary, and his death certificate is unavailable from Winnebago County, IA. His parents were listed as Nikolai & Ingebrit KINDEN, but I feel these were his grandparents. I have resone to believe he had a sister Synneva (married John Frde) and possibly a brother Sjur (John went to Norway in 1903 are returned with a girl Inga Oleanne Sjurdtr KINDEN). The other mystery is a possible family relationship to the RODBERG family from Lake Mills, IA. I have been unable to confirm or deny the link. The person is a descendent of Amund RODBERG who had 6 children: Gertrude, Jacob, Jeneca, Olina, John and Anders (Andreas). I would appreciate any help solving these mysteries.

He was a Civil War veteran, serving with the 12th in Decorah, Iowa. He was wounded (knee, thigh), and fought at Shiloh. I believe he also was a Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis., where a friend died. Anders married that friend's widow, and had eight children with her. One of those children (#2) was my great-grandfather, Theodore Andrew Tobiason. He lived into his 70s, so there would be pension records for his family. Anyone an experts on finding this type of thing?

I have heard stories since my childhood of our family being related to Peter Wessel Tordenskiold, the fameous naval hero of the Danish-Norwegian Fleet (1690-1720). I have a photo of my grandfather allegedly wearing a medallion denoting him as a soldier of "Tordenskiold's Slekt." Any suggestions as to how I might proceed to (1) establish the validity of grandpa's medal - his military service was probably performed in the early 1880's and (2)determine the decendencies of Peter Wessel and his 17 sibblings. In the farm census book for Meraker, he is listed by the previously-mentioned name but at that time he was farming the place Tyholdt. On the on line census from the U of Bergen, he is found as being 43 years old with wife and children. That's really great except I'm trying to locate him as a child with parents and siblings. Every Stubban I have found has very little information about anything and does not mention Erik Jenssen or anyone named Jens having son named Erik. The only other thing I know besides his birth year approx. 1758 or '59, was that he was a member of the ski patrol. Are there suggestions from avid Norwegian researchers as to where I should look for him? I have already hired a genealogist in Norway but my funds ran out before we found out anything about Erik. I have info on his wife back about six generations. Can't believe I can have that much about her and nothing about her husband. HELP! Tonja Clark

Ole Christopher and Helen Tesdahl are my great-grandparents. They were both born in Iowa. Helen Tesdahl was the daughter of Lars Halvorsen Tesdahl and Martha Larsdatter Berg (Ovreberge). They were both born in Etne, Norway. They married on 6 April 1854 and came to the United States in the same or following year. Their oldest child was born in Story County, Iowa, in 1855. Probable port of departure - Bergen. Port of entry unknown. Ole Christopher was the son of Nels Christopherson and Caroline (Carrie) Fatland. Birth information unknown, port of departure unknown, port of entry unknown. Their oldest son was born in Illinois. They then moved to Boone County, Iowa. I have been to the States Archives in Bergen, Norway and have copies of birth, christening and marriage records for Lars Tesdahl and Martha Berg. I have assembled a short biography of the Tesdahls from research conducted in Norway and the Denver, Colorado, Public Library. Lars Tesdahl is listed as one of the original settlers of Story County, Iowa. Comments: Help - I hope to find any information about my grandfather's roots. He was born in Tromso Norway 11-29-1892 - his name was Gustav Adolf Marenius Svensen. I believe he told me that his parents came from Smaaland in Sweden, - and I have their names ; Aksel and Augusta Svensen - which I think he said was changed from Svenson when they arrived to Norway - possible that was all done in Tromso. That is ALL I know about my grandfather, we never asked him abouit his family while he was alive. In regard to his wife, my grandmother, I only know she was Olga Bach, born in Fosnes - possible in Moen, - in Moldvik, daugther of Peder Anderson Bach who became a widower early, and remarried. There is some kinship here to the family Dille on the island Joa. I do have a note that state that Peter Bach owned the farm : "garden Gnr 44, Bruks #2, Moldvik, Moen i Fosnes."I think there were siblings to Olga: Peter who died very young 20-ish???? and a sister Constance bach who lived in Oslo? until her death - but never married. I have tried to find a way to Tromso census, - but not yet. I am also interested in Figenbaum who originated in Baden Baden,Germany, and the Birch family, and Bauck. Pleeese e-mail me: [email protected]!!!!!!!Thanks.

Comments: Searching for Norwegian ancestors by the name JENSON or "farm name" of KVAM. They came to the U.S. around 1896/97, settling in North Dakota. The group included my grandmother, Betsy; her sister, Jensine; mother Anna; and a grandfather known only as J.B. (or J.V.) QUAMME. The name then became QUAM. Anna married Torger SORLIEN in Richland Co., ND in 1899, then lived for many years in Ransom Co., ND. They also had a son, Palmer, who was said to have been a Methodist minister.

Comments: Thanks for this page! I am also searching for relatives in Norway but am having a terrible time. Maybe with this connection I can find my relative. His name is Herman HALVORSON. He was born March 21, 1877. His father was Halvor ? mother Ragnild. Ragnild may have married Christian Anderson after Herman was born. I don't know if Halvor or Ragnild came to the U.S but Christian did. And maybe Herman came with him?? Many questions I need answered. Anyone with help will be appreciated. A fellow searcher, Sharon Mills

Comments: Gulbrand Olson Moen's tombstone says he was born in 1844. He claimed he was born in Oslo and came to America as a young man. He married Anna Hanson in 1870, lived in Freeborn County, Minn., then farmed in Twin Valley area, Minn. before moving to Outlook, Sask. Canada, where he became my grandfather. I would appreciate any any information concerning his roots in Norway. There was a town in Norway, named "MOEN," in the Hadeland area near BRANDBU; Gulbrand may have taken his name from there. This is the only clue I have found.
