Janika took her two children to North Dakota around the turn of the 20th century, but they returned to Norway in 1910. Albert immigrated to Manitoba, Canada in 1924. The parish was Lesje and the farm name was Grimsbo which was also spelled Grimsboe. Some of my ancesters came to America from Folldal in the early to mid 1800s, while others moved to North Norway to Kjaekan. Some of the name changes I know were Abrahamsen, Erlandsen, Jeremiassen Hoelen. There is also a relationship with Sandtroen but I do not know for sure what it is except that Grimsbo and Sandtroen are both farm names in the Folldal area. |

For many years we just traced my father's ancestry back to 1706 (Nordtvetten, Telemark), but when we lived in Trondheim (NTNU) for one year (1984- 85) we met Mrs Aagot in Jar (near Oslo), whose ancestors (Jore) linked up with mine. She had traced hers to Queen Sonja's line which goes back to 972AD Harold the Black, I've come up with a method to link ancestors back and have done so for 26-some generations in my ancestry. Jacob Knudson 1862-1936 Jacod Knutson was born December 27, 1862 at Romsdalen, Norway, at the farm Rodstol, and baptized in Kors church March 15, 1863. May 28, 1881 he married his first wife Ronaug Brudeli in Kors church. She was born Jan.3, 1860 at the Brudeli farm, her parents Anders Andersen and Lisabeth Olsdtr. in Romsdalen, Norway according to the church records for Grytten Parish 1854-1882. We find that Elisabeth daugther of farmer Jakob Knudsen Rodstol and Andersdtr. Ronnaug was born June 24, 1881 and baptized in Kors church Aug. 14, 1881. Information from Grandma Randina, He immigrated to America 1883. He settled on a farm in Blue Earth Minnesota. He was a farm tenant in south Bend Township at least 1885-1892. His fist wife died in 1893 of child birth. He moved with their five children Knute, John, Marie, Elizabeth and Anna to Cass County, Minnesota. March 29, 1899 he married his second wife Gina Christine Tonseth. Her parents were Kristian T. Tonseth and Barret. She and her twin sister! Malla were born December 6, 1873 in Vangs Prestigald Hedmarken, Norway. Gina was baptized Jan 4, 1874 Vang Parish register 15, 1871- 1885. They were blessed with two daughters Bestsy Clara June 3, 1899, and Randina November 15, 1900. When Gina was 29 yrs. 6 mo. 16 days she died in June 22, 1903. She died of Tuberculosis or consumson it was called back then. She was confirmed on Dec. 8th 1889 by pastor B. Hagbi at Bisbee, North Dakota. She was burried at Esterdy Cemetery in Staples, Minnesota. He then married his third wife Wilhiemena Hanson Almquest a widower with eleven children. Her children were Oscar, Conrad, Carl, Elmer, Tressa, Anna, Altona, Alda, Sophie, Hanson. She passed away in 1920 of a stroke. Jacob died May 20, 1936 from a stroke. He is Burried in Rapidan Lutheran Cementery. Obituary from Randina Jacob Knutson, who has been making his home off and on again with his son, John and his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Knudson of Brinsmade, N. Dak. Jacod passed away from a stroke in our village last Friday morning May 20, 1936. Funeral services were held from the Knudson home and at the Zion Lutheran Church last Tuesday afternoon, Rev. V. F. Larson officiation and interment was made at the Rapidan Lutheran Cemetery. Jacob Knudson was born December 27, 1862 at Romsdalen, Norway and was married to Ronaug Brudelie at Romadalen, Norway in 1880 and emigrated to America in 1883 and settled on a farm at Rapidan , Blue Earth, Minnesota. After his wife died in 1893 he moved with his five children to Cass County where he in 1899 was married to GenaTonseth and they had two daugthers. In 1903 his second wife passed away. He married his third wife Wilhamena Handson Almquest in 1908 . He precided in death by two daugthers, Elizabeth (Mrs, Carl Lee) and Anna. He is Survived by two sons, Knute J. Knutson of Seattle, Washington and John Alfred of Madelia, Minnesota and three daugthers Besty ( Mrs. E. J. Carey) Ironton, Minnesota and Randina( Mrs. Oscar Knudson) of Brinsmade, N.Dak. I'll lay out briefly some of the information I have, perhaps it will help someone. Relatives from Gulla born in 1636 was Governor's Rep. Jon Sivertsen Gulla who married Anne Knutsdatter. Coming forward to present time on the direct line (not mentioning brothers and sisters) are Sivert Jonsen (Gulla) & Randi Pedersdatter, who had Peder Sivertsen (Gulla) 1713, who married Dordi Jonsdatter (Magstad). They had Sivert Pedersen (Mogstad) 1782. Then from Skei, was Jon Skei and his decendents. From Solheim was Ole Pedersen 1702 and Peder Olsen 1723. Then from Rov came Anders Jonsen(Rov) 1657 and the Andersens from Rov. From Aune came Ole Pedersen 1757 and Ole Olsen. Some of the Olsens from Aune married with persons from Oye, but that isn't on my direct line. Anyway, a Peder Sivertsen (Mogstad) married Lisbet Knusdatter and had a son Isak, (born in Turnadal) but Peder died young, and Lisbet went to live with an uncle at (Skjolberg) and Anders Petersen from Rindal. Anders married Lisbet's sister Marit Knutsdatter. They started to use the name Skjolberg, which is my grandmother's maiden name. So while I have the records of these very common names I don't know if these places GULLA, SKEI, ROV, AUNE, OYE, MOGSTAD AND SKJOLBERG exist as towns, farms, or have just disappeared and are just last names now. If anyone knows I'm at [email protected] I haven't researched my grandfather's side, which is Haugen, but to the person who was looking for Haugens, my mother said her father's name was changed from Krautzenhaugen when he came to this country. He became Andrew Haugen instead of Anders Krautzenhaugen. |

My Great grandmother Laura Theresa Thorsen (Thoresen) was christened on 15 August 1832 in Fjaere, Aust-Agder. Her parents up until today were unknown. Now I know that they wee Thor Lauritzen and Birthe Marie Hansdr. My "step grandmother" was a Thora Caroline Johansdatter, christened 26 August 1877. Her parents were Johan Christensen and Karen Regine Syversdatter. Thora married Frantz Krusche Pedersen a tobacco spinner from Barbu, Arendal, Norway following the death of Laura Theresa who died 8/19/1904 while giving birth to my mother. Sundbye (born in 1825). His granfather was Jacob Evensen Husbroe(?). Otto's brothers and sisters were Johanna Carine, Hans, Ole, Edvard, Stina (Dina), Ole Edvard, and Ole Jacob. Edvard or Ole Edvard, Ole Jacob, Hans, and Otto came to the U. S. As far as I know, Stina (born 6 Feb., 1860) was the one left in Norway which had children. All these people immigrated to the United States, and some settled in FINLEY, North Dakota and others in BEMIDJI, Minnesota. Maybe he deep down likes to have some Sammi Norwegian in the blood but whatever the reason I am here with my five brothers and sisters.From two different women as my first mother died in 1968 from colon cancer and my father being a young man in his early 30's remarried a good Catholic woman in her 20's but alot of water has passed under that bridge. My near fatal car accident which was a contributing factor to my father's first heartattack. She gave us two God given reason to be thankful for. My grand- father on my mother's side iss Martinius Ringsby (born in R�mskog. He died in Stange (1912). He was married to Thora Blekastad (b. 1874), Otta/Sel. Her grandfather was Ivar Bu (Blekastad) from Sel. She died in 1955. My grandfather on my father's side is Peter Ottestad (whose father came from Moestue Nedre in the county of Stange). He married Julie Langseth, Stange. Peter died in 1933. in Stange. This family is traced back to 15-1600. On my mother's side our ancestors are traced back to about 1300 via Blekastad, H�rven, Hjeltar, Akeleye (Danish nobility), Bjelke, R�mer, Bolt, Gyldenl�ve etc., etc. If this information is of any interest to you, one way or the other, I would like hearing from you. |

From: Time: 1997-08-16 12:52:00 Comments: OLSON/OLSEN; ARNESEN/ARNESON; Between the years of 1871-1883, several families of the Eidskogen Congregation moved to the U.S. and settled in Orrock Township and Blue Hill Township, Sherburne County, Minnesota. There was much intermarriage and use of the patriarchal naming system. All of the families I am researching, at some point are Olson/Olsen/Oleson. Of those who came in 1871 were Ole Pedersen/son, Berger Mathison/sen, Christian Olsen/son. In 1866, Ole Christianson/Christenson born in 1856 in Eidskogen emmigrated. Ole Torkelsen/son born March 1842, who was married to Maren Christine Hansen in 1876 and they emmigrated in 1880. Embret/Ingebrit Olsen/son and son Ole Embretson came in about 1880 followed a years later by wife Berthe/Berge and other children, Julia, Karin, Olean, Bergitte, and Severt. These early settlers began a church which they name Eidskog Lutheran. Other members that are inter-related were Arne Arneson, Kristen/Christen Olson, Ole Christensen/son, Ole Christiansen, Christian Olsen, Hans Andersen/son, Ole Fall, Charles Edson, and Anton Olson. As the tendency was Norwegian to marry Norwegian, there was much intermarriage. There were a lot of Oles, therefore a lot of Olesen/Oleson/Olsen/Olsons. I would be interested in hearing from other Vinge's who might be out there. I'm not too sure if my name is actually VINGE because there is a story that when my grandfather arrived in the US his name was Knutson. The story goes that there was so many Knutson's there that my gf started to be known as Knutson from Vinge. Gradually he simply dropped the Knutson. Could this be true? Or is it like the story of the Chinese gentleman in Vancouver who's name was Ole Olson. When someone asked how he got his name he said that he was second in line at the immigration shed when the man in front of him gave his name as Ole olson. When his turn came they asked his name and he replied, Sam Ting. |
