Comments: I am searching for information about my ancestors in Norway including HANSEN and MORTENSEN from Karlsoy and/or Reinoy Islands in the Troms district of northern Norway. In the US Hans Hansen and family used the name GAARD which was the name of the family farm on Reinoy Island. I am also seeking information about the ROBERTSEN family [earlier generations were called HEGGELUND] from the farm SELNES on Ullsfjord. Thank you.

Comments: I am leaving this message before I go in futher. I am looking to connect with other AASEN's and/or AUSEN's. My Grandfather John Aasen did not like the way most folks pronounced our last name, so he changed the last name for all 10 of his children to AUSEN when they were born. My father & one uncle changed theirs back to AASEN when they went into the Service or after they became 18. I look forward to connecting with other Aasen's to further our Family tree. I have a book written in 1955 about the Aasen family which traces our family back to approx 1400 in Norway. My Great Great Grandfather emmigrated to the USA in apporx 1830-50. The Aasen's originally settled in an area north of Dubuque, Iowa called the Turkey River Settlement. My Great Great Grandfather moved with friends of the family to Northwood, Iowa, then moved and bought some land from the US Government N.W. of Manchester, Minnesota in 1858. The deed was signed by Abraham Lincoln and the farm is now owned by my cousin, David Ausen. I am in the process of working with a few cousins, aunts, and uncles to update the geneology book and computerize it to transfer data back and forth. To contact me, use my email address or snail mail to my home address at: Caroll Aasen Jr., 112250 Eitel Circle, Chaska, MN 55318-1534.  If I can help anyone else with the Aasen name, let me know. Comments: I am searching for a great-great grandfather Andrew H. WARREN -- that being his Americanized name. I have reason to believe that his Norwegian name may have been Anders Halvorson VAARE. He came to the U.S. from Haugesund probably in 1853 (he applied for naturalization 1858) but I don't know where he came in or what name he used. I don't know whether he came over with other relatives (he was single). His brother came through Quebec, so I'm guessing he may have also, however, Canadian archives don't go that far back. Does anyone have other ideas about how to get a ship name and passenger lists for Canadian ports back then? What about Norwegian emigration records? Should I try there also? Any help would be appreciated. Jennifer Stankard

Comments: I have just discovered your book store. I have been searching for books about Norwegian immigrants to the prairies. We have just returned from a successful visit to home sites and churches of ancestors who came from the Ringsaker parish near Hamar, Norway to Lacrosse, Wisconsin. I am interested in learning what I can about a Norwegian settlement in Lacrosse in the mid-1800's. Also, am interested in the names SAUGSTAD, SOUGSTAD, JEMBLI (HJEMLIE) - our ancestor Trygvie Andersen HJEMLIE took the name Thomas THOMPSON when he settled in Wright County, Iowa. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might enlighten me about these surnames or especially about the Norwegian settlement in Lacrosse.

Comments: I am searching for information on the VIUHKOLA family. My grandfather was Hans Peter VIUHKOLA born May 22, 1879, maybe in Varangerfjorden (Vadso) Norway. His father was August VIUHKOLA born in Tornio, Finland. Mother was Karolina MUSTAKALLO born in Torolino, Finland. Hans Peter's brothers were: August Helmer, John, Aldrick, and Lari, also thought to be born in Norway. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge or how to accquire information? The boys were thought to have come to America in 1900. They were listed in the 1910 census. Please feel free to contact me with any information, or the how to's. This is a great site, enjoyed reading every entry.

His wife, my grandmother, was named Olga Kristina ANDERSEN (maiden name) and was from Risor, Norway and was born in 1889. They were married in Norway in 1909 and emmigrated to the U.S. sometime in the early 1920's, I believe. I am trying to find my ancestors on both sides of my family, especially my grandmother's, since her mother died when she was seven years old , and I don't have any information on her family. From there they travelled to Canada's Northwest territories, where both were deceased within a year...around 1894-1896. They left behind five or six young children, one of which was my grandfather. I believe the names of the children to be Oliver, Severt, Annie, Mabel, and Inga. CommentsTen years ago while a visiting scientist at the Karolinska in Stockholm, Sweden, I was able to go to Norway and find the farm from which my name was taken. I talked to the people (named Stolen) currently living on the farm and they gave me a copy of a little booklet on the history of the area (Nes, Hedmarken). It contained a history of who lived on what farms and when. If these publications are generally available.  It might help others with similar family searches. Also, the library in Hamar was a great help.

CommentsI don't know how to respond to guestbook messages, so I am creating this message to do so. To Carol, Lanesboro (note of 6/19/98): Have you tried the Norwegian museum in Decorah, IA? Also, in my hometown of Spring Grove (near you), I have found that, by sitting in the park and chatting with the older people, you can gain a lot of historical info. You might try that in Lanesboro. To Phillip Larson (note of 9/28/97): You asked for info about families from Mo-I-Rana, incl. Storforshei. I will be staying with my husbands relatives in Storforshei over the next couple of weeks, including Einar PEDERSEN, Dorthea STORVOLL, and Inga and Brit OLSON. If you provide me with more info, I could ask questions for you. To Curt Larsen (note of 9/30/97): Please see my message last week re. the STENE name (sometimes spelled STEINE). To Kristina Kjome (note of 12/16/1997): There are several people named KJOME in Spring Grove, MN 55974 (Dana, Doris, Douglas, John, Olaf & Marie). Also, Midge Kjome at NE IA Community College in Calmar, IA, may have family info. You could write and tell them about your family and find out if you are related. Irene Bjerky (note of 7/28/97): You are looking for the name BJERKE. There are also several people named Bjerke in Spring Grove, MN 55974 (Harold, Herbert, Marland, Ron, Theodore). MARTIN LAURITSEN STRANDLIE emigrated to the US, settling in Western Wisconsin, I believe, and married Ottilia Olson. They ultimately came to live in Stoughton, Wisconsin. CommentsI am looking for my grandfather's parents, who were born in Norway and came to the U.S. My grandfather's name was Peter Nelson, born in Lansboro, MN, in 1880. The county has no record of his birth (it was likely a farm birth). His father was Nels Nelson, and family information holds that their Norwegian surname was Skoraj or Skorai. Peter's death record also indicates his mother's name was Barbara. Nels Nelson was reportedly born in 1798, as family history places his age at 82 when Peter was born. Peter was the last of 16 children, and the only other known sibling of his is brother Charlie, who married an Augusta and had 2 sons named Clyde and Norman - they lived in Leeds, ND. Is there anyone out there with any information?

When he first came to Canada to work off his passage on a farm in Saskatchewan, he was using the name Sandnes. But I recently found a postcard from Norway addressed to him spelling it Sannes. He had one brother Leif. Dad was born I believe in the Vesteraalen Isands in Northern Norway but lived until he was six in Montana near Missoula or Swan Lake. I may have some cousins in Montana that I have not met. We did visit some people there when I was very young and I remember Dad and Mom speaking of them. There was an Auntie Fina (I think Johnsen) other surnames I remember are Kesterson and Strom. Emma and Uno Strom visited my Mother and Father sometimes. Love to hear from anyone that can give me a hand.
