Seal & Flag of Maryland: The Great Seal of Maryland was brought to the Colony of Maryland from England in 1634 by Leonard Calvert (grandson of Grace (or Alice) Crosland). That seal carried the Arms of Crosland and Calvert, quartered according to heraldic procedure. Those markings have been in use in the official Seal of Maryland since that time, first by the Colony and later by the State. The same markings were much later adopted by the State as the official Flag of Maryland.
Banner of the Confederate 1st Maryland Regiment: The Confederate 1st Maryland Regiment marched under a banner marked with the arms of Crosland during the American Civil War.
