Edward Crosslin,
Marriage Bond, 23 January 1819, Southampton County

Know all men by these presents that we Edward Crosslin ^ Simmons and Dixon Bass are held and firmly bound unto his excellency James P. Pricton Esquire Governor and Chief magistrate of this comm. and his succession in office for this time being in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payment will and truly to be made.   We bind ourselves and each of us our and each of our heirs executors & administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents.  Sealed with our seals and testes this 23rd day of January 1819.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be held and solemnized between the above bound Edward Crosslin ^ Simmons and Susannah Daughtrey.  Now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said intended marriage then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue.

Teste
James Rochelle

Edward C (X) Simmons [Seal]
Dixon (X) Bass [Seal]

Comment

The court clerk must have been confused about Edward Crosslin's surname.  He added "Simmons" as the surname in what appears to have been an editorial update to the bond.  Then he reduced "Crosslin" to an initial in the signature block as if Crosslin was a middle name in stead of a surname.

Neither Edward Crosslin nor his security bond, Dixon Bass, were literate so the errors would probably not have been recognized or challenged by them.
