Mary Croslin,
Mentioned in Will of Thomas Cotton, 1786, Sussex County

Will Book E, Pages 96-97

In the name of God Amen.  I Thomas Cotton of the Parish of Albemarle in the County of Sussex being in perfect health do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament and first of all I bequeath my soul to God hoping at the great Redemption to have that reunited to my Body and with both to enter unto eternal Happiness purchased by my Redeemer Jesus Christ.  My body I desire may be buried in a Christian like manner according to the direction of my Executor hereafter mentioned and as touching what worldly goods it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me those dispose of in manner and to persons following.

First I give and bequeath unto my Brother Nathaniel Cotton one Negro man named Burrel during his life and that at his death I desire that he may go to Harris Cotton and his heirs forever.

Also I give to my Brother Nathaniel Cotton one Negro woman named Amey during his life and then at his death I give the said Amey and her future increase to Sarah Ivey and her heirs forever.  Also I give and bequeath unto my Brother Drury Cotton one Negro boy named Jimmy and one boy named David to him and his heirs forever.  Also I give and bequeath unto Cary Cotton one Negro boy named John to him and his heirs forever.

Also I give and bequeath unto Littleberry Ivey one boy named Daniel to him and his heirs forever.

Also I give and bequeath unto my Brother Nathaniel Cotton one girl named Lol to him and his heirs forever.

Also I give to Mary Croslin all my stock household furniture together with all the remainder of my Estate not before mentioned.

Also I give and bequeath unto my Brother David Cotton all my right in Stephen to him and his heirs forever.  Lastly I do hereby appoint & constitute my Brothers Nathaniel & Drury Cotton executors of this my Last will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all wills and Testaments by me formerly made.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal this Eighth day of May in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Six.

Edward Crosslin,
Will, 1802, Southampton County

Will Book 5, Pages 338

In the name of God, amen.  I Edward Crosslin of Southampton County do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and following.

To wit

First:  I leave to my daughter in law Wilthia Crosslin the use of the land & plantation whereon I now live and which is separated from that where Jas Scoggin formerly lived by a dividing line made by said Scoggins and John Crosslin during her life in widowhood and at her death or marriage I give the said land to my grandson Thomas Edward Crosslin to him and his heirs forever.

Item:  I give to my grandson Edwin W. Crosslin the land and plantation where James Scoggins formerly lived being divided from that land where I now live as mentioned above and containing one hundred acres more or less to him and his heirs forever.

Item:  I give to my granddaughter Martha P. Crosslin one feather bed & furniture (the bed commonly called mine) and one pine chest to her and her heirs forever.

I give the residue of my estate of any kind whatsoever to be sold and the amt to be equally divided amongst my three grandchildren Edwin, Thomas E. and Martha P. Crosslin to them & their heirs forever.

Item:  I hereby nominate and appoint my friend Jacob Darden Jr and my nephew Jonas Crosslin executor to this my last will and testament Revoking and disannuling all other wills by me heretofore made Notifying and confirming this and no other to be my true last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Edward Crosslin have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 17th day of June 1802.

Edward Crosslin,
Probate Granted, 1806, Southampton County

Will Book 5, Pages 339

In a Court held for the County of Southampton on the 19th day of May 1806, This will was presented in Court and proved by the oaths of Spencer Pierce and Jacob Darden two of the witnesses hereto, and continued.  And at a court held for the said County on the 21st day of October 1806 This will was presented in court by Jacob Darden the exor having been before proved proved by two witnesses is ordered to be recorded.  And on the testimony of the said exor who made oath according to law probate is granted him giving security whereupon.  CC Saml Kelso

Jonas Crosslin,
Probate Ordered, 1817, Southampton County

Order Book for 1817, Page 86

At a Court of Quarter Session held for Southampton county the 17th day of March one thousand eight hundred and seventeen.

Present: Richard P Clem, Char Bowers, Lawrence Cook and Peter Boothe, Gentlemen Justices.

The last will and testament of Jonas Crosslin deceased was provided by the oath of James Britt one of the witnesses thereto and confirmed and on the motion of Peggy Crosslin the executrix therein named, and who made oath thereto and together with Carr Darden and James Britt her securitors entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of five hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted the said Peggy Crosslin for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

Ordered that Alexander Boothe, Henry P Cotton and Edwin Crosslin, being first sworn before a Justice of the Peace, to well and truly appraise in current money all the personal estate of John Crosslin deceased and return the appraisement under their hands to the court.
