Immigrant to Virginia prior to1720, Thomas Wieland and related lines

Sanford GORHAM [Parents] was born in 1764 in Virginia. He died on 16 Apr 1816 in Russelville, KY. Sanford married Hannah CAVENDISH on 23 Nov 1794 in Kentucky.

Letter in father's notes says "kept a hotel in Russelville, Kentucky. He fell through the 2nd. floor of the hotel and was killed." The below is from a post to the Gorham group:

"In another suit filed in Bourbon County Circuit Court (box 696-Gorham vs. Gorham hrs. filed Dec. 1, 1826, and settled 1827) we find the children of Sanford Gorham as follows:

John Gorham, George Gorham,. Sanford Gorham, Hervy T. Gorham, William Gorham, Aaron Gorham, Thomas Richard Gorham, Thorton Gorham, Betsey Gorham who had married Charles C. Russell, Susan Gorham, who had married Sylvester Bailey, and of these Aaron, Thomas and Thornton were "under 21 years of age" by Thomas Elliot, their guardian.

Sanford Gorham died intestate [without a will] in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and the inventory of his estate is filed June Court 1816 with his widow, Mr. Hannah Gorham, administratrix."

Another correspondent says that the children were: "William A., George, Susannah P., John A., Harvey Taylor, Thomas Richard, Thornton C., Aaron, Sanford and Betsy."

This correspondent continues with what I presume is the Sanford, son of Sanford:

"Sanford Gorham b: abt 1812 in KY m: abt 1837 to Mahulda Freeman b: 6-9-1815 in TN d: 9-9-1897 in LA

They had:
John Thomas Farl or Farrell, b:1838 KY
Nancy, b: 1840 TN
Martha, b: 1841 TN
Harriet, b: 1843 ?
Mary C., b: 1846 ?
Robert Sanford, b: 1848 TN
Aaron, b: 1849 ?
George, b: 1851 TN
Jesse J., b: 1853 TN
and Wesley Harvey. b: 1856 LA

Sanford and Mahulda arrived in LA before the birth of their last child, my great grandfather, Wesley Harvey, in 1856. There's a Gorham Cemetery in Winn Parish, LA and most of them and their descendants are buried there. Sanford worked in salt mines while in LA and when he died, he wanted to be buried in salt. They honored that wish. But went back later to find him and bring him to our cemetery but couldn't find him. I'm not sure of the date of his death, but I know it was after 1872.

Once they reached LA, with, they spread like wildfire. I've divided things up into post Sanford and pre Sanford. I'm having no problems tracking the Louisiana Gorham's. Winn Parish, through USGenweb, has a great page. They are adding to it constantly. Plus, I have so much family there. I'm just trying to find someone who can prove whether we are or aren't descended from Sanford and Hannah, so I can look elsewhere. And if we don't, maybe you have something in your notes somewhere that can point me in a different direction to look. Even if it turns out that we're not from this line, I've spent so much time looking, that I've adopted this family, anyway. And I'll continue to participate and offer links when I come across them. Sorry this is so long. It's just so frustrating not being able to find any info on Sanford and Mahulda. If it helps, Sanford's granddaughter, Harriet Tennessee Gorham( father: George) applied for citizenship in 1896 through the Cherokee Tribe. I'd appreciate any tidbit of information you can throw my way. I'll let you
go now. :) Take care.

JOSEPH W. GIVENS. One of the oldest and most prominent families of Howard county is represented by Joseph W. GIVENS, of Richmond Township. He himself was born here fifty years ago, was reared and educated in his native environment and attended Central College, and since attaining manhood has been closely identified with the farming and stock-raising interests of the locality. As a stockman he is easily one of the most successful in the county. His father was the late Charles E. GIVENS, who died at the advanced age of eighty five. While he was the largest land owner and paid more taxes than any other citizen of Howard county, his achievements and accumulations were by no means confined to material wealth. He was a strong man, in mind, body and character, and his influence in the community was independent of his possession of many acres and other forms of wealth. His father, Ben F. GIVENS, a native of Kentucky, where he was reared, came to Missouri during the territorial era, and joined the little community of pioneers who were making the first clearings, crops and rude homes in the wilderness of Howard county.

The late Charles E. GIVENS was born in the pioneer home in Howard county in 1823, and all his youth was spent amid the surroundings of a country just emerging from wilderness under the sturdy impetus of the backwoods settlers. For his education he attended the log-cabin seminary of the time, and at the beginning of his independent career married Miss Mary Ann KING. Her death on December 18, 1907, at the age of seventy-five marked the passing of one of the noble women of the past century. Their seven children, who, in the second generation have filled honored and useful places in their respective communities were named as follows: Mary D. RUSH, of Fayette; Dr. H. K. of Fayette; B. F. of Springfield, Missouri; Joseph W. of Fayette; Fanny Belle FRISTOE, of St. Louis; Elizabeth K., of California; and Asile SMITH of Fayette.

The father of this family, Charles E. GIVENS, for many years raised tobacco on a scale adopted by few other residents in the county, and did a large business in the commodity, buying and shipping thousands of hogsheads. He was a slave owner, having about one hundred when the war came on, and not only lost these, but his barns were burned and his cattle, horses and mules were run away. It was a disaster sufficient to have permanently bankrupted the ordinary man, but Mr. GIVENS went back to his deserted acres, slowly accumulated stock, and in a few years after the war was running five hundred head of cattle and other livestock upon his broad pastures. He was the owner at one time of thirty-five hundred acres, and at the time of his death left a splendid estate to be divided among his children.

Mary Ann KRING was born in 1832. She died on 18 Dec 1907 in Howard Co., Missouri. Mary married Charles Ewin GIVENS.

I got the surname "King" from the biography on her son, that is under her husband Charles. I don't know which is correct.
