Joshua WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born about 1771 in , , Virginia. He died after 1838 in , Carroll Co., Kentucky. Joshua married Ann WARD on 16 Feb 1792 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia.
His signature can be seen on the document "December 8, 1801, Madison, Culpeper, Inhabitants of Bromfield Parish, for sale of glebe" which can be found at:
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/P?relpet:10:./temp/~ammem_IBzd::
Apparently moved to Gallatin, later Carroll Co., Kty., about 1810-11., and died there sometime after he wrote his will on March 20, 1839, which lists wife and children, including "heirs to my dtr., Sarah Tandy, decd." He is found in the 1830 Kty. census Gall. 165 No Twp L.
I have this from a letter written in 1940 by Thomas A. Wayland, MD, Veterans Admin. Hosp, Jefferson Barracks, MO. to Roy C. McCormick, Lincoln, Neb.:
"We come from John. He inherited considerable of his father's property at this (his?) death and grew quite wealthy. I have a copy of his will disposing of his personal effects, including some 30 slaves.
He had numerous children, one of which was Joshua, our ancestor. He inherited property and migrated to Carroll County, Ky., which is just below Louisville, on the banks of the Ohio. He likewise required (acquired?) considerable property and evidently had some education as he was a judge at that place.
Here is Joshua's will:

Joseph WAYLAND [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 9 Sep 1778 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church. He died in 1811 in , Orange Co., Virginia. Joseph married Rebecca.
It has been confirmed that Rebecca is Joseph's widow. Joseph may not have died about 1811 in Virginia as Holtzclaw thought. However, Rebecca appears by herself in the tithables 1813-16, which is evidence for widowhood. Paschal Wayland is a possible son, as Mrs. Grafton McInnish in her records has a "Pake" listed as a son of Joseph and Rebecca.
Rebecca was born about 1780. She married Joseph WAYLAND.
NOTE: A, p.86
They had the following children:
M i Paschal E. WAYLAND 1 was born about 1800. He died about 1853 in , Clark Co., Missouri.
Not sure that this Paschal is the same one who went to Clark Co., MO. That one was connected to Jeremiah Wayland and William Bartlett, who administer and secure his estate. Jeremiah was b. 29 Jun 1796 and was his second cousin, one time removed.
There is a federal land grant for Paschal E. Wayland on 10 Apr 1837 in Clark co., MO. It can be seen at:

Matthew MARCUS was born about 1778. He married Elizabeth WAYLAND on 30 Oct 1801 in , Madison Co., Virginia.
Elizabeth WAYLAND [Parents] "Betsy" 1, 2 was born on 12 Oct 1779 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church. She died on 23 Mar 1855 in , , Kentucky. Betsy married Matthew MARCUS on 30 Oct 1801 in , Madison Co., Virginia.
Date of death is given by Kentucky State Historical Register, Vol. 43, p. 299. Spelling of name at time of death was "Elizabeth Marcus". Keith says that family history says she "married a Methodist preacher and moved to Missouri". That is apparently wrong, as she went to Kentucky, and it is not known whether or not her husband was a preacher.
Joel WAYLAND [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 22 Dec 1781/1782 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church, Madison Co., Virginia. He died on 6 Jan 1870 in , Howard Co., Missouri. Joel married Sarah SNYDER on 18 Nov 1806 in , Madison Co., Virginia.
Other marriages:DIXON, Nancy W.
See "History of Boone County, Missouri", pub. 1882 where on p. 1100 it gives a write-up on Joel's son, Fountain Finks (B73), and also talks of Joel. It says that Joel was a "soldier of the War of 1812" and lived to be age 88. It says that he left Va. in 1826 (when Holtzclaw shows he deeded away land), went to Ohio where he stayed 12 years, and then to Missouri. Joel probably got a veteran's land grant in Ohio based on military service. Another book, "Annals of Methodism in Missouri", states that "Joel Wayland became a member in 1838, and served as a class leader ever since". Also, much information on Joel and his descendants is given in an unpublished genealogy book, "The Grigsby Family", by Louise Coutts, written in 1978. The above three books are available from The State Historical Society of Missouri, Hitt and Lowry Streets, Columbia, Missouri 65201 (include long SASE). Joel's will is in the Howard County Will Book, Vol. 6, p.367, and lists wife and children. Joel is found in the 1810 Madison Co., Va Census, p. 367; the 1830 "Mus" Co., Ohio Census, p. 187; and in the following Howard Co., Mo. Censuses: 1840, p. 21; 1850, p. 136; and 1860, p. 72. His widow is found in the 1870 Howard Co. Census, p. 44; and in the special Census of 1876, Howard Co., Mo.; and in 1880 Howard Co., p. 24. Hebron Church Records say born 1782; family bible says 1781. I wonder if maybe he was christened in 1782.
Sarah SNYDER 1 was born on 2 Jun 1788. She died on 10 Sep 1823 in , Orange Co., Virginia. Sarah married Joel WAYLAND on 18 Nov 1806 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

Nancy W. DIXON 1 was born on 3 Oct 1805 in , , Virginia. She died after 1880 in , Howard Co., Missouri. Nancy married Joel WAYLAND on 21 Sep 1826.
Second wife of Joel. I have a map of the location of the 99 acres listed under Nancy Wayland in Howard Co., MO., Moniteau TWP, which is dated 1876. It does not identify which Nancy Wayland this is, but I am fairly sure that it is this one. Joel was a known Methodist and this settlement is made up of several Methodist families. The Smith Chapel Methodist Church and Cemetary is nearby on the map and I would bet that Nancy and Joel are buried in this cemetary. Joel died 1870 and Nancy died sometime after the 1880 census. Also, Nancy is found next to several Grigsby families on this map, whic is further evidence that this is the right Nancy. I was given a copy of the map, which is too poor a copy to copy again, by Lester E. Powell, 7320 Sundown Court, Columbia, MO 65201. Phone: 314-474-5255.

William MELONE [Parents] was born on 21 Oct 1783 in , Greene Co., Virginia. He married Maria WAYLAND on 22 Jan 1809 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
NOTE: A, p.87.
I received information on this line from Mrs. Madeline Swetnam, whose notes say that it was compiled by: William Maurice Melone, 9601 Long Hills Drive, Sun City, AZ 85351
Maria WAYLAND [Parents] "Mary" was born on 29 Jan 1785 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church. She died in 1859 in , Greene Co., Virginia and was buried in , Greene Co., Virginia. Mary married William MELONE on 22 Jan 1809 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
NOTE: A, p.87; B, p.53
Mary's birth is in Hebron Church records. Her marriage was performed by Rev. George Baugham, with bond set Jan. 14, 1809, with Henry Wayland giving his consent for Mary, Matthew Marquess (husband of Elizabeth (A76)) as surety, and Joseph (A75) and Henry Wayand Jr. (A80) as witnesses. See Knorr "Marriages of Orange Co., Va.", p. 59. She is listed as "Maria" in some records. I received a letter in 1984 from William C. Reed, Jr., 1602 West Margaret Ave., Peoria,
IL 61604, who said that "Maria Wayland, dau of Hinrich & Hanna Wayland married Reuben Bruce of my line". I don't know his documentation of this, as the above VA records seem authentic.
They had the following children:
M i John Henry MELONE
WAYLAND was born about 1787. He married Lucy WAYLAND.
NOTE: A, p.87
Unknown Wayland cousin that Lucy marries. Wife was living in Mercer Co. Kentucky in 1838 with son Nathaniel H. Wayland, don't think he was there and may have died before then.
Lucy WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 22 Nov 1787 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church. She died after 1838 in , Mercer Co., Kentucky. Lucy married WAYLAND.
NOTE: A, p. 87
Living in Mercer Co., Kty. in 1838 with son, Nathaniel H. Wayland. Not known if died in this location or not. Married a Wayland cousin.
They had the following children:
Henry WAYLAND Jr. [Parents] 1 was born on 30 May 1790 in , Madison Co., Virginia and was christened in Hebron Church. He died on 23 Feb 1870 in Roanoke, Howard Co., Missouri and was buried in Roanoke Cemetary, Howard Co., Missouri. Henry married Aranar "Ara" MELONE on 1 Apr 1811 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
Henry deeded all of his interest in his Virginia properties to his relatives on Oct. 6, 1822 (Holtzclaw in Germanna Record 11) and his youngest son, Eli, was born in VA on Mar. 22, 1822. So, I feel that he probably left VA no sooner than the Spring of 1823 for KY. Family tradition says he stayed in KY briefly before going to MO; it is not known exactly how long he was in KY, but he is found in below 1830 MO census. He bought land in central MO in 1835 (US Land Sales, Vol. 2, p. 471). He was probably there by 1826, as the biography on his grandson, J.H. Wayland, says his father and grandfather immigrated to MO in that year.
He is found in the following Censuses:1820 Virginia, Orange County, page 585. Henry is between 26-45 yrs.of age (he was 30), with a wife in the same age bracket (she was 31). There are 2 males under age 10 (William, age 4 and John, age 2), 3 females under age 10 (one is Sidney, the other two are unknown).
1830 Randolph Co., Mo., p. 326 (the census index mistakenly has him in Jackson Co). Both Henry and wife are in the 40-50 age bracket (he was 40), and he also has two females age 15-20 (one Sidney age 18, the other unknown), one female age 10-15 (unknown), two sons age 10-15 (William, 14, & John, 12), and one son age 5-10 (Eli, 8).
1840 Chariton Co., MO, page 303, line 1. Included are 1 male age 50-60 (Henry, age 50), 1 female age 50-60 (Ara, age 51), 4 males age 20-30 (John, age 22; William, age 24...the other two were possibly husbands of the older dtrs.), 1 male age 15-20 (Eli), 2 males age 5-10 (possibly children of his older dtrs.). It says 2 in agriculture, 6 in manufacture & trade (possibly what his dtrs. and sons-in-law were doing), 1 male slave, age 24-36, 1 female slave, age 24-36.
1850 Howard Co., Mo., p. 136 at age 60, and only other person is Aranar, age 61.
1860 Howard CO., MO, p. 67, and is age 70 with wife Araner listed as the only other family member at age 71. Henry is listed as born VA and Ara in Maryland in both 1850 and 1860 censuses.
His wife, Ara, is alone in 1870 Howard Co. Census in Prairie Township, living with her dtr., Sidney Robertson, age 58, and Hiram Robertson, age 65. She is age 82.
Henry died intestate 23 Feb 1870, and I have a copy of the administration of his estate, filed Dec. 6, 1870, Howard Co. W.B. Vol 7, p.17, mentioning sons John H., William, and son-in-law Hiram Robertson, securitors. Eli is not mentioned.
The VA marriage of Henry and Ara is recorded in Marriage Bond Book 7 at pages 154, 156 and 220. It was issued 1 April 1811 and marriage same date at St. Thomas Parish, Witnesses James Wayland and John Melone (Ara's father). Bondsman was William Melone (Ara's brother, age 28). Father of Henry is given as Henry Sr., and George Bingham performed the ceremony.
In the National Archives, look in: "Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812; M692" which has the following:
[Wayland, Henry
1 Reg't Mounted Gunmen (Dyer's) Tennessee Volunteers
War of 1812
Saddler (the craftsman who made and repaired only horse saddles...and probably bridles)]
He reportedly served from 28 Feb 1812 to 3 May 1815. The veterans were rewarded with free land in the frontier states. He is on the Howard Co., MO list of 1812 veterans. There is a possibility that the other 2 dtrs. were Mary and Amanda, but no proof of this.
His 1837 & 1859 land grants can be viewed at the Bureau of Land Grants at:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
Henry sold many plots of land, and some sales are quite interesting. For instance, he sold 80 acres to Sterling Price on April 1, 1837 (Book E, p. 35) and again sold him some land on Jan. 5, 1841. General Sterling Price was later a hero for the Confederacy (John Wayne in the move, True Grit, named his cat General Sterling Price). His grandson, Henry Harrison Wayland (my g-grandfather) fought for the Confederacy under Gen. Price. Henry also sells land to, and buys some from William Wayland in 1839. This is presumably his son Buck, who would have been 23 years old.
I do not know who his oldest two sons were, and the two dtrs., all of whom are in the early census older than Sidney. This could be referring to his son Thomas, as it is in the same township:
Wayland, Thos. {Mrs.} "Aunt Nancy" -- d. 19 Jun 1878 Roanoke of consumption; Moberly Daily Monitor, Thursday 27 Jun 1878
Aranar "Ara" MELONE [Parents] 1 was born on 29 Oct 1788 in , , Maryland. She died on 9 Sep 1877 in Roanoke, Howard Co., Missouri and was buried in Roanoke Cemetary, Howard Co., Missouri. Aranar married Henry WAYLAND Jr. on 1 Apr 1811 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
Her exact birth and death dates and death date of husband are from information furnished by Madeline Swetnam of Moberly, MO, who got it from William Melone. Her marriage license was issued April 1, they were married April 4. In another old paper of Mrs. Swetnam's her b.d. is 28 August, 1788 and death 9 Sept. 1870, but I believe that the other dates are more likely correct. On the 1850 census her name is given as "Aranar" and that may be the correct full name.
They had the following children:

Fountain WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1796 in , , Virginia. He died in 1866 in , Randolph Co., Missouri and was buried in Farm of B60. Fountain married Amanda Melvina Fitzgerald SNELL on 31 Jul 1827 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
NOTE: A, p.87, B, p.6, 22-24
Fountain is found in the 1830 Orange Co., Va., Census, p.336; 1840 Randolph Co., Mo., Census, p.278, 1850 Randolph Co., p. 199B; and 1860 Randolph Co., p.74 in the Silver Creek Township. Emigrated from Virginia and arrived in Mo. about 1839, according to birth places of children on censuses. "Fountain" is seen as a surname in Virginia and Missouri. Had 3 sons fight for South in war.
His descendant, Beulah Wayland McInnish, has two more children listed for Fountain: Jeremiah and James, but no information on them. I have two by these names as brothers of Fountain. She also lists Elizabeth's middle initial as "S", and Mary's as "D".
She also lists Joseph as father of Fountain, rather than his brother, Henry (which I think is correct, as Henry in will leaves slaves to "my daughter Lucy Wayland and my son Fountain Wayland") and says that the two bought land grants from veterans of the War of 1812 and added to it, living in Prairie Hill, Mo., or Wayland Township. This is the area settled also by Eli Wayland, near Salisbury.
Amanda Melvina Fitzgerald SNELL was born in 1807. She died after 1860. Amanda married Fountain WAYLAND on 31 Jul 1827 in , Orange Co., Virginia.
They had the following children:
M i Robert M. WAYLAND F ii Elizabeth S. WAYLAND M iii Joseph H. WAYLAND F iv Amanda S. WAYLAND M v William J. WAYLAND F vi Lucy Jane WAYLAND M vii George W. WAYLAND was born in 1840 in , , Missouri.

I (Neil Block) would say that quite a bit of thought went in to their
decision & enlisting with friends & neighbors had a lot to do with it. I
(Neil Block) have also noticed that after Pea Ridge when Price was ordered
East of the Mississippi, members of a family would decide that some should
go & stay closer to home, in case they were needed there.
