12.11.1998    The names I am researching are:

Peter McLELLAN born abt 1790 probably Bowmore. On 23 Oct 1834 he married Jean CARRICK. They had 5 children Hugh born 1836 Ealabus/Allen born 1840 Kilmenny/Helen born 1841 Kilmenny/John Chiene born 1844 Kilmenny and James born 1850 Kilmenny.
John Chiene and Hugh came to New Zealand.
Jean CARRICK was the daughter of Allan CARRICK and Isabel McLEAN. Thier children were (as far as I know)Helen born abt 1793 Killarow/Mary born abt 1795 Killarow/James born abt 1798 Killarrow/Janet born abt 1798 Killarrow and Jean born 18 Jan 1807 Bowmore.
I know nothing more about about these families and would love to contact others researching them.

12.11.1998    We are descendants of the MacArthur and Gilchrist clans who came to the
Bruce Peninsula and Owen Sound areas of Ontario, Canada around 1820.  We
have very little information regarding the Islay connections.  Is there any
help out there?  I am a grandson for Mary MacArthur Brown who spent most of
her life between Owen Sound and Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She also has first
cousins living in Sarnia and Stratford, Ontario.  I am the first born
American from this family.  Bob Ward, East Lansing, Michigan.

12.18.1998    My interest in Islay is on behalf of my wife whose maternal
ancestors were farmers or crofters on the island around  the Kilchoman
area.  Having been there, it is a pretty bleak place even now and one can
only imagine the hardships the inhabitants had to bear 150 years ago.
        My wifes ancestors were:-
1. John McNIVEN born about 1794 and died about 1831.
+ Catherine McPHERSON born about 1808 and married about 1831.
        2.  Only one known child:
             Archibald McNIVEN born Apr 1834.
+ Catherine McDIARMID born 1833 married 20 Mar 1856 in
Cairduncan, Kilchoman.     They had seven        known children.
               3.   Jean McNIVEN born 1856 in Islay.
               3.   John McNIVEN born 26 Sep 1858 in Kilchoman, Islay.
               3.   Alexander McNIVEN born 1861 in Islay.
               3.   Archibald McNIVEN born 29 Jun 1864 in Kilchoman.
               3.   Neil McNIVEN born 20 Dec 1867 in Islay.
+ Janet McKINNON born about 1865 in Skye.
               3.   Mary McNIVEN born 27 Feb 1870 in Kilchoman, died
Helensburgh 1945.
+ James JENKINSON born 27 Sep 1862 in Leith, Married
2 Jun 1896 in Kilchoman and died in Le        Havre in WW1 on 8 Jun 1918.
They had five children in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire between
1897 - 1903.
               3.   James McNIVEN born 27 May 1872 in Kilchoman.

I would be interested to hear from anyone researching this "clan" of
McNIVENs.

Regards, Brian Millican
