12.10.1998 I am looking for information
on the Family related to Catherine Spence who was from Bowmore on the Isle of Islay. She
was born abt. 1846. Catherine's parents were Peter Spence(who Christening was Nov. 4, 1807
in Killarrow, Argyll, Sct.) Peter was a Journeyman Caulker at the time of Marriage(January
31, 1834) to Margaret Leslie, who was born July 2, 1804 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. They
also had Janet Spence born May 20, 1834 & David Spence born abt. 1836. Peter Spence's
Parents were David Spence & Janet McDonald, who were married abt. 1806.
Catherine Married on Sept. 10, 1867, In Greenock to Lachlan Beaton (born abt.1831,
who was from Mull). Lachlan also was a Journeyman Caulker. Best Wishes, Suzanne Cain Beaton
12.10.1998 I am seeking information on
the McNaughton family of Islay, possibly from
a farm called Ballytarsin. Specifically seeking info on Alexander
McNaughton, his brother Duncan McNaughton and Duncan's wife Margaret
Fisher McNaughton.
Alexander McNaughton came to New York colony in 1738 to settle the Argyle
Patent, a venture led by Laughlan Campbell. Alexander's brother, Duncan
McNaughton, apparently died in Scotland. I would like to know where
Duncan is buried. Duncan's widow, Margaret Fisher McNaughton, came to New
York colony with her children prior to the American Revolution and
settled on land in Rutland County, Vermont, owned by her brother Donald
Fisher. This land was very near the Argyle patent property in Washington
Co., NY, where her brother-in-law Alexander McNaughton and his family
lived.
I am descended from Duncan and Margaret's son, Findlay
McNaughton, born
Scotland, possibly Islay, ca. 1742-52, died West Pawlet, VT, 1798.
I would be interested in exchanging information about the
McNaughton and
Fisher families, both in Islay and New York. Also interested in the
Argyle Patent.
I have long been hoping to get more information about these
families
Scottish roots.
Thanks, Nancy Thomson
12.10.1998 I am working with the Islay
Family History Society to help them digitise
some of the data they hold. The Finlaggan Trust on Islay is also
digitising records. the information which will be entered onto computer
includes census records 1841 - 1891 and Old Parish Records. The Family
History Society have a number of photographs which will be scanned.
These include school photos, many of which can be matched to school
rolls and the individuals identified. They also have photographs of
places in Islay.
