8. John Fyfe Robertson, born Abt. 1830 in Scotland; died November 21, 1901
in Plympton, Manitoba, Canada. He was the son of 16. John Robertson and 17.
Mary Fife. He married 9. Isabel Currie Abt. 1860.

John Fyfe Robertson came to Canada with his family in 1842, at the age of
12. The family settled in Nottawasaga, Ont.* John and Isabel were married in
1860 and they lived in Collingwood, Ont. where 5 of their children were born
(John, Archibald, Mary, Moses, and Angus). In 1872 they decided to go west
with several other families. They left Owen Sound by boat to go to Duluth,
MN. During the trip they were stuck on a sandbar for 3 days before they were
freed by a tugboat that had been sent for. They then traveled in a covered
wagon caravan on a long hard trail to Fort Garry, Man where they rested and
took on supplies. The caravan was going to Portage LaPrairie, Man. but John
heard about some good land to the south. It was then that the Robertson
family left the caravan and traveled to Prairie Grove (Dugald), Man. where
they settled a homestead . Three more children were born there (Annie who
died as an infant, Isabel, and Lisbeth).

The family faced numerous hardships in Prairie Grove. One year a swarm of
locusts came in like a wind storm and wiped out everything in sight - an
entire crop was lost! In another year the hay stacks caught fire and were
destroyed, leaving them with no winter feed for their stock. The family
lived in Prairie Grove for 10 years and, in 1882, moved to Plympton in order
to be closer to a school. Three of the older children were needed to work at
home so they had little or no opportunity for "schooling" but most of the
younger children received a good education. Robert Bruce and Mirren Amy were
born in Plympton. In spite of hard times the family always received weary
travelers with a warm and cheery welcome. Their home was well known for its
hospitality. The family was happy and close, and the children, in later
years, looked back on those days with fond and loving memories. John Fyfe
Robertson and his wife Isabel are buried in Prairie Grove, Man.

* Nottawasaga derives from the Algonquin words "nahdoway" (or "nahdowa") for
the Iroquois and "saghi" (or "saga") for river outlet. Collingwood (in
Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe County) is on Nottawasage Bay off Georgian Bay.
The town was first settled in 1835 (where it was described by the local
Tobacco Indians as "an impenetrable swamp") and was known variously as
Hen-and-Chicken Harbor (because of one large and four small islands in the
bay), Hurontario, New Village, Nattawa, and Old Village before it was called
Collingwood in 1853.
