is a parish in the southeastern portion of Islay, containing Port Ellen. It covers
most of the southeastern portion of the Island while Killarrow covers the northeastern
portion. This I discovered while searching for my g-g-grandmother, Isabella McDuffie
who was born in Killlarrow, in 1808 to Alexander McDuffie and Elizabeth Somebody, whom I
have not been able to find as yet. I don't know anything anything about the Gillies
or Gillises except that I have been told that that name meant servant. Since this is
just a new website I have not received any response. I think that any info I may
find in here might be more germain to my family than what I find in a huge site like
LANARK-L due to the much smaller population. Happy New Year and good hunting.

1.16.99 My family of
Mc/MacTaggarts originated on the Oa, Islay, and subsequently lived elsewhere in Kildlaton
parish, at Ardmore, Ardtalla, Proaig, Suirnish, etc. I have our family tree back to 1767.
My branch left Islay in 1923 although others of our MacTaggarts were in the Port
Ellen area until 1939.
I am trying to trace the descendants of Donald McTaggart, who left Islay
probably as a widow, with five young sons, probably in the period about
1892-1900, maybe a little later. We suspect he emigrated to Canada or the
US. These are the details :
Donald McTaggart born 1853, Islay, died abroad (?)
wife Anne Morrison, born 1855-57, died 27 March 1888, Islay
their children:
Dugald, b. 15 March 1882, Ardtalla, Islay, Argyll
Archibald, b. 2 April 1883, Ardtalla, Islay, Argyll
John, b. 1884, presumably Islay
Alexander, b. 2 Nov. 1885, Ardtalla, Islay, Argyll
Thomas, b. 2 Feb 1888, Ardtalla, Islay, Argyll
Donald McTaggart, widowed, appears in the 1891 Census and 1890 Voters Roll on Islay
Donald's sons would have died in the 1960s-70s, had they lived a full life. Given
the predominance of males, descendants in the present day bearing the name McTaggart seem
likely.
I am also interested in hearing from other Mac/McTaggarts who originated on Islay,
especially from the parishes of Kildalton and Oa. Many went to Canada and elsewehere
in the mid 1800s. I believe some settled in Islay, Alberta, some in McTaggart,
Saskatchewan, and many more in Ontario. I have details of some of these families.

1.17.99 Hi, I am seeking information about my g-Grandparents William OMNET (b Jan 9, 1844 Kilchoman) and Margaret MACQUEEN (b Islay) married June 22, 1866 in Greenock. Scotland. They and 3 children came to Ontario, Canada in 1874. William's father (John?) was raised on Islay by a CHALMERS family. his wife's name was Christine.
