12.20.1998    I am looking for any record of a family of tinkers, name of father Duncan
MCPHEE, Mother Elizabeth(Cameron) MCPHEE... children John, James, Elizabeth,
Susan... all of the children were brought up in orphanages in Greenock from
the late 1920's to 1930's... they were given their parents names, told they
were tinkers but no other information was given... they were later told that
they had died... this may not have been true at that time... John later
emigrated to Chicago, himself and Elizabeth my mother-in-law were re-united
as adults after she advertised in a Sunday Newspaper, his landlady
recognized the name and contacted Elizabeth to tell her John had joined the
RAF and had lodged at her house before emigrating to America... James was
found but the reunion was not a success, Susan has never been found, she was
last seen in Greenock in 1939... the Scotland GRO searched through all of
their records when Elizabeth applied for a Birth Certificate to obtain a
passport for a visit to John in the US, they found nothing, no record of
births for any of the children... we searched the St Cath's indexes for
England and Wales, found nothing also... they may have been born in Ireland or
Births may not have been registered as seemed to be commonplace among
Travelling families..I have heard that MCPHEE was a very common name among
Highland tinkers.... Elizabeth was contacted some time ago by a BBC
Researcher who was interested in making a documentary about Elizabeth's
search for her roots and sister, she has also been interviewed on BBC Radio
Merseyside, in the North Wales Weekly news and a reporter in Greenock
contacted us about the story... if anyone has any record of this family or
comes across any Memorial Inscription for Duncan and/or Elizabeth, marriage
record or anyone who may know or have known Susan, Please contact me at
[email protected] thanks, sorry for this long mail... by the way, have
added a page for Old Kilsyth Churchyard Stirlingshire Memorial Inscriptions
to the Genealogy Scotland site below..transcribed by Bob Coomber, who first
sent them to the Stirlingshire Mailing list..and kindly gave his permission
for me to put them on a page, many many, names a wonderful resource,

12.20.1998    My name is Coral Palmer and I live in Johannesburg South Africa.  My interest was aroused in Islay when I found a Free Mason scroll amongst my mothers papers after she passed away.  It was awarded to Master Mason John Muir of Islay and has led to a deep interest in the place.  My mothers maiden name was Muir.
On a visit to Islay a few years ago I purchsed a very informative book and you are welcome to add such to your data collection.  The book is THE DAY BOOK OF DANIEL CAMBELL OF SHAWFIELD 1767 with relevant papers concerning the Estate of Islay edited and annotated by Freda Ramsay.  It contains many rent and lease lists and the New York Colony Argyle Patent documents V111-Xl. My
main research names on Islay are MCMILLANS, MCARTHURS, MUIRS, MCNIELLS.
Regards Coral Palmer
