12.11.1998 My name is Nolene and I live
in Johannesburg, South Africa - a
long way from Islay! My mother & I have been trying to research our
family from Islay but have found it very difficult as the records seem
to be difficult to locate. The first hint that we had that we had a
connection to Islay came from the Freemason suitcase of a John MUIR.
This case was marked "John Muir of Islay". We assumed initially that
this John MUIR was my great grandfather who came out to South Africa
at the turn of the century. This turned out to be a wrong
assumption - It actually belonged to his grandfather (after whom he
had
been named) who was born early in the 1800s.
The information that we have so far on our Islay connections is very
patchy but I have listed it below in case there are any cousins out
there who can help fill in any of the gaps:
Descendants of Charles MUIR
1 Charles MUIR Born: Abt. 1780 in Islay ? Died: Abt.
1812 in At
sea during Maritime Wars?? Age at death: 32 est. Emigrated to Canada
with his two brothers (names??). John, his eldest son stayed on Islay
It is believed that Charles and his brothers died in or during the
Maritime War Maritime War - 1812 - 1813 Charles was a blacksmith he
was married to ? MCNEIL Born: Unknown in Mull of Oa, Islay, Inner
Hebrides, Scotland. We are only aware of one child:
