D-271-3: 12 Aug. 1835, will of Joseph Duncan; very sick and weak in body; to my son Housand Duncan the land on which I now live, 100 acres, also one other tract adj. the 100 acres containing 43 acres for which I hold Willia Lowe? (blotted) obligation for title, it being understood that the said Howson is to pay the rest of my heirs $62.50 each whose names are as follows, viz, Thomas Catharine Emanda Pricilla Agnis Nancy and Mary Ann (no commas); it is well understood that my wife Mary is to enjoy and have full possession of the lands aforesaid during her widowhood, but in case she marries then said Howson to have and enjoy possession by paying sum aforesaid which shall become due and payable 4 years after he obtains full possession of lands; all personal property and other estate to my wife Mary during her widowhood, then equally divided between all my children except my son Thomas believing I have done a fathers part by him I leave him no more of my estate except the $62.50 which is named in this will. Appoint Daniel Richardson and (blank space) executors. Wit. Wm. M. Howsley, Thomas J. Reynolds, Jona. M. Brady; Rec. 18 April 1836 on oaths of Thomas J. Reynolds and Jonathan M. Brady.

F-120/121: Johnson Duncan of Hardin Co. KY, of old age yet sound in mind ... make this my last will and testament. 1st, Just debts and funeral expenses be paid but not to sell the articles mentioned in the second section of this will for reasons hereafter mentioned.
2nd, that Elizabeth Duncan my beloved wife have the rockaway and harness belonging thereto, it being the new one, the marble topped bureau, the lounge, the safe, the cooking stove, all the bedding, one turkey carpet. The reason I will and desire my wife Elizabeth to have these articles is that she bought them with money her father gave her, and my children by my first wife got all the articles belonging to me coming to me from her father's estate and also those acquired during her lifetime.
3rd, it is my will that after the dower is allotted to Elizabeth my wife of all my estate (in case I die first) not mentioned in the 1st & 2d sections of this will, that the remainder be divided equally between all my children. /s/ Johnson Duncan. Teste S. Franklin, J.H. Mossbarger.
At a regular term of the Hardin Co. Court in Elizabethtown on Monday, Dec. 15, 1873, the foregoing instrument of writing was produced in court, proven in due form by oath of J.H. Mossbarger, one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and continued and on Monday, March 16, 1874, the same was produced in Court, established as such and ordered recorded, the Court being of opinion that said will was fully proven. On motion of John A. Browning, who took the oath required by law and executed bond with Noah Hicks as surety, which was approved by the Court, the administration with the will annexed of Johnson Duncan dec. is granted him agreeably to law. Widow declined in writing.
On motion of John A. Browning, Admr, it is ordered that L.T. Mabberly, W.T. Love and G. Wheatly, or any two of them, being first duly sworn, do appraise the personal estate of Johnson Duncan dec. and they will return their appraisement as required by law, and a list of the articles and value of each set apart to the widow separately from the articles appraised for sale.

Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Vol.5, pg.562: STUART ENGLISH DUNCAN ... the career of Stuart English Duncan, first vice president of the Peaslee-Gaulbert Company, ... officer in the Second Presbyterian Church, Louisville (Jefferson Co. KY), ... Mr. Duncan was born in Kentucky's metropolis July 30, 1866. His father, cut down on the threshold of what promised to be a brilliant career in the ministry, was Joseph De Witt Duncan, a native of Elizabethtown, Kentucky and descendant of an old Virginia family. He was the son of Thomas H. and Lucretia Duncan, of Hardin County, Kentucky, whose antecedents were among the early settlers of Lincoln County, founded in 1781, before Kentucky was taken into the Union and was a part of the State of Virginia.
Thomas H. Duncan was a prosperous merchant of Elizabethtown. His wife was the daughter of John and Agnes (Fisher) Bigler and the latter was the daughter of Steven and Magdaline (Garr) Fisher. Steven Fisher, the great-great-grandfather of Stuart English Duncan, was the son of Louis and Barbara (Blandkenbaker) Fisher, all of Virginia.
Joseph De Witt Duncan was graduated early in life from old Centre College, Danville, ... [enlisted with the South in the civil war] under Basil W. Duke, later a major general but then a lieutenant in Morgan's command and Gen. John B. Castleman, then a colonel, both of Louisville. ... When the war was over, Joseph De Witt Duncan took up the practice of law ... It was only a few years later that Joseph De Witt Duncan decided to enter the ministry. He attended a Presbyterian seminary at Columbia, South Carolina, ... accepted the pastorate of the Third Presbyterian Church. He was in the first year of that pastorate ... when called by death February 22, 1878.
The mother of Stuart E. Duncan, Eliza English, is still living. She like her husband was born in Elizabethtown and descended from early Virginia settlers. Her mother was the daughter of Luke and Eliza Munsell, the former a prominent surgeon. Her great-grandfather on her mother's side was Achilles Sneed, a prominent attorney of Frankfort, Kentucky and first clerk of the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
... Stuart English Duncan ... was only twelve years old when his father ... died at the age of thirty-four. As a result the son, the eldest of three children, two of whom are living, had to content himself with a common school education. ... The present wife of Mr. Duncan is Annie Leathers, daughter of Maj. John H. Leathers, ... they were joined in wedlock November 11, 1902, and have a daughter, Anne Stuart Duncan.
Mr. Duncan's first wife was Mary Louise Grinstead, daughter of W.E. Grinstead, Louisville. They were married December 20, 1894. As a result of this union two children, Eliza English Duncan, deceased, and William Grinstead Duncan, were born.

Pg.781: HARRISON M. DUNCAN, ... of Miller Township in Gentry County, was born near Darlington, Jan. 3, 1862. His parents were William and Martha (Boaz) Duncan, both now deceased. William Duncan was born in Hardin Co. KY, and came to Missouri in 1858. He settled near Gentryville and later moved to Nebraska returning, however, to Missouri where he died at Fillmore in 1867. Martha (Boaz) Duncan died in 1869 at the home of her parents near Gentryville. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan had two children: Harrison M., the subject of this sketch; and Edmond C., married to Ida Weeks, and now living in Los Angeles, Calif. ....

Duncan, postmaster at Yates, ... is a native of Kentucky, born in Grayson county, May 26, 1843. When he was nine years of age he came with his parents, William S. and M.E. (Thomas) Duncan to Marion Co. MO, where they settled in 1852, near Middle Grove. The father died there in 1856, and they returned to Kentucky (the mother and her family, including Richard G.) immediately after the father's death. There the mother subsequently married Rev. Ezra Ward, a prominent Presbyterian minister. But he also died in 1863. Richard G. in the meantime had learned the saddler's trade, and he came to Missouri the year following his stepfather's death. He located at Paris, in Monroe county, and worked there for two years ... He came to this county in 1870, and secured a farm near Yates, ... In the meantime, in 1870, his mother came from Kentucky and made her home with him. ... His brother, Thomas J., ... On the 29th of May, 1866, Mr. Duncan was married to Miss Laura E. Penn, a daughter of W. N. Penn, a prominent citizen of Monroe county. She died February 3, 1868. No children survive their marriage. ....

His mother, whose maiden name was Rosanna Duncan, was a native of Kentucky, a daughter of Housen Duncan, farmer. Richard P. Giles was reared on the family farm in Monroe county, Missouri. ....

Pg.273-5: JAMES RICHARD DUNCAN (sketch prepared by John B. Aikman), was born in Big Springs, Hardin Co. KY, January 7, 1843, and died in Terre Haute, November 10, 1903. His father, Rev. Peter Duncan, being a Methodist minister in a very remote rural district, and of frail health, felt the need of a more favorable environment; abandoned KY home when James was 14 years of age and moved to Mattoon [Coles Co.], IL. His ill health ... James inherited from his parents many of their sturdy traits ... Scotch ancestry to which the name Duncan belongs. First business undertaking a news stand in the depot hotel at Mattoon, IL, known as Essex House. Then engaged in retail grocery business. At this point in his career he was married, August 16, 1863, to Miss Julia Rosana Vreeland, who still survivies him. To them were born three daughters and one son, all of whom are still living, viz, Mrs. Virgil E. Perryman of Atlanta, GA; Miss Ida B. Duncan and Mrs. John B. Aikman of Terre Haute and Charles E. Duncan of Chicago. Paper & Stationery business named J.R. Duncan & Co., and hides & old materials business named Duncan & Kingsolver. In 1889 he took into partnership his son-in-law Mr. John B. Vol.5 p.2538: SIMEON W.S. DUNCAN, "Commodore" Duncan, resident of Dallas more than 40 years, the father of Trinity River navigation, born Hardin Co. KY 22 Oct. 1848, the son of James A. and Catherine (Daughterty) Duncan. His father from VA, had moved in 1857 from Hardin Co. to Louisville [Jefferson Co.], where he was a merchant; in 1870 to TX with his family, from Jefferson TX to Grayson Co. in 1873, then Dallas where he died in 1892 at age 66, survived by his widow who was born in KY in 1827, died in Dallas in 1913 at age 86. Sim Duncan married in April 1883 to Miss Denia Bullion; their only child is Miss Josephine Duncan. (MAD: the same article is on Vol.5 pg.2152-5 of the 1916 edition)

Pg.360: COLUMBUS CRAIG DUNCAN. A Native of the Bluegrass State. The State of Kentucky has furnished Doniphan County with some of her best citizens. Columbus C. Duncan was born in Barton County, Kentucky, November 7, 1833, and came to Kansas about thirty-eight years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan were married November 7, 1856, and have reared a large family, all of whom are good citizens. Great Grandpa Duncan, as he is ususally spoken of, has about thirty grandchildren and about ten great grandchildren. Columbus Craig Duncan's sons and daughters are as follows: William Henry, of Des Moines, Iowa; Frank C., David M., Mollie, now Mrs. George Newman; Lillie, now Mrs. James Jenkinson, all of near Troy. Pg.1528: Kingman Co., Kingman. HORACE B. DUNCAN, physician, was born in Hardin County, Ky., November 9, 1850. He is the son of William T. Duncan, a cabinet-maker by trade, and native of Kentucky, and Eveline, his wife, also a native of the same State. Horace B. commenced his education in the common school, but in 1870 he entered Lynnland College, located in Hardin County, Ky., which he attended for three years. He afterward attended the medical department of the university at Louisville for two terms, graduating from there in 1876. After graduating, he located at Lebanon Junction, Bullitt Co., Ky., where he commenced the practice of medicine, which he pursued until 1879, when he moved to Kansas and located at Kingman, where he resumed the practice of his profession. On May 7, 1879, Mr. Duncan was married in Bullitt County, Ky., to Miss Sally M?. Hays (MAD: poor copy), a native of said county. One son has been the issue of their marriage, Everett B., born in Kingman, Kan., April 23, 1880.
