Beatrice M. Ahern Beatrice M. Ahern of Arlington died unexpectedly on Jan. 26 at her home. She was 69. Born in Arlington, she was a lifelong resident and homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Christine (Cullen) Ahern; and sister of Christine McManus and Mary Lanigan, both of Arlington, Louise Caisse of Salem, N.H. [sic], Elizabeth G. of Dennisport, Francis D. of Fla., Robert B. of Bedford and John W. Ahern. A funeral mass was said on Jan. 28 at St. Agnes Church. Burial was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Joseph P. Ahern MARLBORO — Joseph P. Ahern, 76, of 86 Lincoln St. died Wednesday evening in his home after an illness. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Elinor A. (McCarthy) Ahern; three sons, Dr. Dennis J. and Thomas J. Ahern, both of Marlboro, and Dr. John P. Ahern of Londonderry, N.H.; four daughters, Elinor A. Hanlon of Hanahan, S.C., Mary E. Ahern of Quincy, Kristen J. Whitney of Marlboro and Elizabeth C. Moran of Southboro; two brothers, Thomas and Charles Ahern, both of Stoughton; a sister, Mary Ahern of Quincy; and 16 grandchildren. He was born in Boston, son of Thomas and Ellen (Crowley) Ahern, and lived here 33 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Ahern was a truck driver for more than 40 years at AIRCO Industrial Gases Co. of Acton, retiring in 1980. He was a member of American Legion Post 132 of Marlboro, the Italian-American Club, Teamsters Union Local 25 of Charlestown and Immaculate Conception Church. The funeral will be tomorrow from John P. Rowe Funeral Home, 57 Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 22 Prospect St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Agnes R. (Mahon) Ahern WEBSTER - Agnes R. (Mahon) Ahern, 88, formerly of 25 Lincoln St., died Thursday in Oakwood Convalescent Home, 86 Hartley St. Her husband, James J. Ahern, died in 1971. She leaves a son, Thomas J. Ahern of Dudley; a daughter, Elizabeth Exley of Easton, Pa.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A grandson, Gary Ahern of Dudley, died in 1972. She was born in Edgewood, R.I., daughter of Patrick and Annie (Cunningham) Mahon and lived here 57 years. She graduated from St. Xavier Academy in Providence, R.I. Mrs. Ahern was once a governess and later a telephone operator in Cranston, R.I. She was a member of St. Louis Church and its League of Catholic Women. Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston, R.I. There are no calling hours. Florence "Dolly" O'Hern Florence "Dolly" O'Hern of Scituate, a former teacher, died Tuesday in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was 89. Mrs. O'Hern was a former treasurer of Friends of the Scituate Public Library, charter member of the Scituate Health Service, a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 50 years and a member of the Scituate Historical Society. She was a life member of the Scituate Country Club and former board member of the Plymouth County Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Sodality and choir of St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Scituate Harbor. She had taught in Scituate and Hingham and in West Ossipee, N.H. Mrs. O'Hern leaves a son, John D. of Elmira, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Wright of Buzzards Bay and Helen O'Reilly; and five grandchildren. Martin O'Hearn Martin O'Hearn, former machinist for a light manufacturing company, died Feb. 11, 1993, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton. He was 72. Born in Cambridge, Mr. O'Hearn graduated from Cambridge High School. He lived most of his life as a resident of Watertown. He leaves his wife, Phyllis (Haskins) O'Hearn; his sons, Martin G. O'Hearn of Boston, Michael P. O'Hearn of Watertown, and Dennis J. O'Hearn of Amherst; his brother, George O'Hearn of Boston; his sisters, Margaret Rusey of Somerville and Theresa Manning of Watertown; and three grandchildren. William R. O'Hearn, Sr. PAXTON — William R. O'Hearn Sr., 79, of 65 Grove St. died yesterday in his home after an illness. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Violet M. (Merchant) O'Hearn; a son, William R. O'Hearn Jr. of Rutland; two daughters, Patricia A. Cutting and Judith M. Clockedile, both of Paxton; two sisters, Mildred Gray of Hutchinson Island, Fla., and Margaret Walton of Sterling; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Gardner, son of William G. and Delia (Bashaw) O'Hearn, and lived many years in Worcester before moving here in 1950. Mr. O'Hearn owned and operated the former Custom Fence Co. in Worcester for many years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Columba's Church and Worcester Lodge of Elks. Patrick Melvin O'Hearn Sr. A memorial service for Patrick Melvin O'Hearn Sr. of Southeast Portland will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Pearson-Allen Funeral Home. Mr. O'Hearn died of cancer Saturday in the Friendship Care Center. He was 71. He was born July 11, 1921, in Mason City, Iowa, and served in the Army during World War II. He was one of the servicemen who helped establish the army tank school and training ground at Fort Knox, Ky. He came to Portland in 1951 and was a self-employed service station, garage and body shop operator. He was a past president of Northeast Rotary. Survivors include his wife, Grace Louise; his sons, Patrick Jr. of McClure, Ohio, and Joseph of Sacramento, Calif.; his daughter, Pamela Mae O'Hearn Kogle of Gresham; his brother, William of Sun Lake, Ariz., his sister, Marjorie Barnett of Redmond, Wash.; and one granddaughter. The family suggested that remembrances be contributions to the Elks' Eye Bank or the Arthritis Foundation. Disposition was by cremation. — The Oregonian 21 April 1993

Alice Doris (Thibodeau) O'Hearn WATERBURY—Mrs. Alice Doris (Thibodeau) O'Hearn, 67, of 101 Madeline Ave., widow of John E. O'Hearn, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. O'Hearn was born June 10, 1925, in St. John, Maine, a daughter of the late David R. and Rosanna (Dubey) Thibodeau. She was employed by Holgrath Corp. for 27 years until her retirement. She was active in several bowling leagues in Waterbury for many years, and was a communicant of Our Lady of Loreto Church. She leaves a son, James D. O'Hearn of Waterbury; a daughter, Mrs. John (Kathleen) Corpaci of Southbury; two brothers, Norman and Lawrence Thibodeau, both of Palm Coast, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Roger (Violet) Harvey of Fort Kent, Maine, and Mrs. Nellie Bridgeman of Euliss, Texas, and three grandchildren. A. Jane (Doherty) Ahearn JAFFREY, N.H.—A. Jane (Doherty) Ahearn, 85, of 304 Main St., formerly of Winchendon, died yesterday in Monadnock Community Hospital, Peterborough, N.H. Her husband, Raymond P. Ahearn, died in 1975. Her son, Bernard P. Ahearn, died in 1989. Her daughter, Sheila Plante, died in 1971. She leaves a brother, Edward G. Doherty of Jaffrey; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Winchendon, daughter of Bernard and Julia T. (Harrigan) Doherty, and lived in Winchendon most of her life before moving to Jaffrey in 1989. She was a graduate of Murdock High School in Winchendon, and Burbank Hospital School of Nursing in Fitchburg. Mrs. Ahearn was a registered nurse and worked many years at the former Winchendon Hospital, retiring in 1976. She was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Winchendon, and a member of the Burbank Nurses' Alumni. The funeral will be Friday from the Fletcher Funeral Home, 70 Pleasant St., Winchendon, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce St., Winchendon. Dorothy M. (Ahearn) Benson PAXTON—Dorothy M. (Ahearn) Benson, 71, of 144 Grove St. died Tuesday in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness. She leaves her husband, Gordon L. Benson; a daughter, Jody E. Bagdis of Paxton; two brothers, George F. Ahearn of Paxton, and William H. Ahearn of West Boylston; two sisters, Lillian Reynolds of Shrewsbury, and Margaret Doyle of Leicester; four grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. A son, Ronald J. Benson of Paxton, died in 1992. She was born in Paxton, daughter of John and Marcella (Zablo) Ahearn, and had lived here all of her life. Mrs. Benson worked at Norton Co. as a clerk for 13 years, retiring in 1983. Previously she worked in the kitchen at Paxton Center School. She attended the former Worcester Junior College, both in Worcester. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Paxton. Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Eugene J. "EJ" Ahern Eugene J. "EJ" Ahern died suddenly July 28 at his home in Lynn. He was 42. Born in Cambridge, he was a resident of Lynn. He was a Realtor and a Vietnam veteran of the US Marine Corps. He served in the 2nd Marine Division in 1969 and 1970 and received a Vietnam service medal (with a bronze star) and a Purple Heart. He was a member of the DAV Post #1 American Legion in Manchester, NH. He was the son of Timothy Ahern Sr. and the late Mary [sic] Agnes O'Neill; father of James and Ryan Ahern and the brother of Robert Ahern (CPD) of Cambridge, John Ahern and Timothy Ahern Jr., both of New Hampshire, and Patricia Powers of Arlington. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. There was a funeral mass July 31 at St. John's Church in Cambridge followed by a private interment. Marion J. O'Hearn Marion J. O'Hearn of Arlington, a court administrator, died Thursday at Mediplex Nursing Home in Newton after a lengthy illness. She was 72. Born in Cambridge, she moved to Arlington about 12 years ago. Miss O'Hearn graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School. She worked in the building department of the city of Cambridge from 1947-58. Miss O'Hearn held a variety of positions at Middlesex County Superior Court during her 25 years there, retiring as head executive assistant in 1983. She is survived by a brother, Walter H. of Wellesley; many nieces and nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Frank Joseph Ahern Frank Joseph Ahern, a computer consultant and unsuccessful candidate in several campaigns for public office, including the presidency, died of cancer Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was 68. Mr. Ahern was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Jesuit and Samuel J. Peters high schools and received a master's degree from Tulane University in computer science. Mr. Ahern qualified as an independent candidate several times for the presidency. He last ran for office in 1992. He also ran for governor in 1967, state superintendent of education in 1971 and Orleans Parish School Board in 1972 and 1978. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was awarded several citations for bravery, including three purple hearts with Gold Stars. As a machine gunner and infantry squad leader during World War II, Mr. Ahern took part in 16 landings in the Pacific. He was wounded twice on Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi. In a 1954 interview while he and two other veterans were watching the opening at the Panorama Theater of "The Sands of Iwo Jima," Mr. Ahern recalled, "I was laying there with the squad when suddenly this man on my right said, 'Look. Look.' I turned around and there was the flag flying over Suribachi just like they show in the movie." After World War II, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve. Later, he volunteered for Korea and served with the 1st Marine Division. Mr. Ahern was later promoted to Captain and served as assistant inspector-instructor of the Louisiana Marine Corps Reserve Battalion. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. As a computer expert, Mr. Ahern had been a program system representative for the IBM Corp. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth, Patrick and Terry Ahern; a daughter, Kathy A. Pozdol; three brothers, James, Edward and Bill Ahern; two sisters, Lucille A. Purcelle and Elisa A. Pepperman; and a grandchild. A Mass will be said Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. A visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and after 8 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Marion J. O'Hearn Marion J. O'Hearn died Aug. 5 after a lengthy illness. Born in Cambridge, she was a city resident for many years. She was a graduate of the Cambridge High and Latin School. A public servant for 36 years, she began working for the city in 1947 when she was assigned to the building department. In 1958, she began working for Middlesex County where she held a variety of administrative positions. She retired in 1983 as the head executive assistant to Middlesex Superior Court Clerk-Magistrate Edward J. Sullivan. She also served as a Eucharistic minister for St. Peter's Church in Cambridge. She was the brother of Walter H. O'Hearn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. There was a funeral mass Aug. 9 at St. Peter's Church in Cambridge. Arrangements were made by the Daniel F. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia O'Hearn, Roanoke, Elizabeth F. Feltz and husband, Larry, Houston, Texas; two sons, L. She was a retired stenographer for Amity Printing Co., Cincinnati. A son, Richard O'Hearn, died in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Wilson of Norwood; sons, William O'Hearn of Newport and Patrick O'Hearn of Stewart, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. MARY E. O'HERN, 82 25 YEARS AT CITY HALL Mary E. O'Hern was happiest when she was working. She joined the Finance Department of the city of Syracuse when she was 55 and worked there until she was 80. "She loved it there. In fact, we had to beg her to quit. Even at 80 she did not want to retire," her daughter Elizabeth Silvia said today. Mrs. O'Hern died Sunday at her home after a long illness with cancer. She was 82 and lived at 184 Sunhill Terrace, Syracuse. Mrs. O'Hern was a life resident of the Syracuse area. Before working in the Finance Department at City Hall, she worked part time while raising her family. At City Hall, she was noted for arriving to work, no matter the weather. "When a lot of people couldn't make it in, they could always depend on my mother being there," her daughter said. Mrs. O'Hern was an active Democrat, serving as a committeewoman for the First Ward on Syracuse's North Side many years. "One of her pride and joys was Mel Zimmer. She campaigned for him," Silvia said. Mrs. O'Hern was diagnosed with cancer 17 years ago. She was in Florida in February for an annual two-week vacation with her sister, when she became ill. Her daughter called her "a great lady. She was a firm believer: If you want something in this world, you work for it. If you go out for something in this life, you have to earn it. It doesn't come to you." Mrs. O'Hern's life revolved around her family. "She never thought about any of her needs. It was always our needs or other people," her daughter said. Mrs. O'Hern was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church and formerly of St. John the Baptist Church, both in Syracuse. Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Silvia of Syracuse and Patricia Kolodzie and Mary Indick, both of Mattydale; a son, William O'Hern of Fineview, Jefferson County; a sister, Catherine Kimball of Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services are 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Keegan-Osbelt-Knight Funeral Home and 11 a.m. in Most Holy Rosary Church. Burial is in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse. Raymond C. Ahearn Raymond C. Ahearn, 79, of Abington, a bookkeeper for Bailey's Garage for many years, died Wednesday in Brockton Hospital after a long illness. A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Ahearn received the American Area Medal and the World War Victory Medal and was a member of the Abington Veterans of Foreign Ward and the Lewis Dorsey American Legion Post. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Bridget's Church and the Vincent O'Brien Knights of Columbus. Born in Brockton, he lived in Abington 60 years. Husband of the late Madeline E. (Welch) Ahearn, he is survived by three sons, William J. Ahearn of Abington, J. Michael Ahearn of Marshfield and Francis X. Ahearn of Quincy; three daughters, Shelia M. (Witney) Ahern, 78, of Plainville and formerly of Dedham, a secretary for the former Rustcraft Greeting Card Co. for 25 years, died Thursday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. A native of Arlington, Mrs. Ahern lived in Dedham for 44 years before moving to Plainville five years ago. Wife of the late John F. Ahern Jr., she is survived by her daughter, Joan M. Frederick E. Ahearn SCITUATE—Frederick E. Ahearn, 83, of Scituate, a state bank examiner for 15 years and the Scituate representative on the board of South Shore Regional Vocational Technical High School, Hanover, died Saturday in Queen Anne Nursing Home, Hingham, after a long illness. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Ahearn retired in 1981. He also was an automobile salesman for Wolf-Sullivan in Hingham and Carl Crook in Abington for 20 years. He was a member of Scituate Senior Center and a volunteer for the Scituate Senior Shuttle. Mr. Ahearn was born in Cohasset, where he graduated from high school, and moved to Scituate 60 years ago. Husband of the late Frances (Locklin) Ahearn and the late Eleanor (Saunders) Haughey-Ahearn, he is survived by three brothers, Henry M. Ahearn of Cohasset, Marvin A. Ahearn of Waltham and Francis X. Ahearn of Brighton; and many nephews and nieces. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary of the Nativity Church. Burial in Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset, will be private.
