Edward Philip Ahern
In San Francisco, Sunday March 21, peacefully after a brief decline, Edward Philip Ahern, 96, native of San Francisco, the youngest of eight children of Thomas Ahern, native of Ireland, and Annie Margaret Ward of San Jose. His earliest memories were often of his grandmother, Margaret Kennedy Ward who had come to San Francisco in 1852 from Sydney, Australia after her family emigrated there in 1849 from Ireland. His childhood was full of trips to the baseball stadium at 15th and Valencia, adventures in Golden Gate Park and friendships with Albert Samuels and Edward Hewlett, both deceased.

In 1926, the family moved to Sacramento where he attended Sacramento High School graduating in 1930. The family returned to San Francisco, and he attended USF graduating in Economics in 1934. While in high school, he had met Alda Clifford, and they conducted a long-distance courtship while he was in college. They married at St. Edward the Confessor Church on California Street and settled in the Sunset in Doelger City buying the new house that would be their home for the rest of their lives. The move was to a wilderness as it was then in the last block before a great expanse of dunes that stretched to the beach.

Like his father, Edward was a longtime employee of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He began work there in 1935 and retired in 1992 after 56 years with the company. Starting as a clerk, he became an Assistant Train Master in 1942 working in Oregon and Nevada. Though a civilian, his wartime experience was not without hazard; it was largely spent handling ammunition trains at the Naval Weapons Depot at Hawthorne, Nevada. After the War, he went into the Personnel Department and finally to the Executive Department where he worked for Donald DJ Russel and for Benjamin Biaggini serving eventually as Executive Vice President from 1977 until 1992. In the corridor outside his office, there were photographs of all the men who had served as Chairman, and when he retired, he remarked that he had served under six of them between his service and that of his father [1881-1930], they had served under all of them. Preceded in death by his parents, by his sisters Margaret Ahern Morgan and Cecilia Bernadine Ahern, by his half-sister Mary Ahern Wheeler and by his brothers Thomas Paul, Raymond, Gerald, Francis and Edward, who died in childhood and after whom he was named. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Alda, and their children Kathleen Christiansen, Michael, Kevin, Dennis, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services and interment private.

Lives Lived
Florence Ahearn
Visionary woman of strength, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. Born March 14, 1917, in Schreiber, Ont. Died Dec. 26, 2009, in Ottawa of heart failure, aged 92. Florence Ahearn showed by her example that the glass was always half full. She was just 10 years old when her mother died of cancer, and her father had no choice but to send his daughter to spend her formative years in Toronto with an aunt. Florence attended high school at Sillery, a French convent just outside Quebec City. While there, she was entirely immersed in the French language and culture. Her experiences in Quebec led to her insistence that all her children attend French grade school. She was a visionary who recognized the importance of speaking two languages. After graduating from high school, Florence earned her bachelor of education degree from the University of Toronto and became a high-school teacher in Plantagenet, Ont. In university, Florence met pharmacy student Edward Ahearn. She and the dashing Irishman were married in 1941 and eventually settled in Ottawa, where Ed managed Ahearn's Drug Store, the family business. They had eight children: Maureen, Janet, Michael, John, Mary, Patrick, Margaret and Kathleen. Florence and Ed were completely devoted to each other right up until Ed's death in 1971 of a heart attack. Together, they celebrated their children's achievements and entertained friends and neighbours in their loving home.

Florence loved sports. She played goal for the University of Toronto women's hockey team and was a fisherwoman extraordinaire. She loved the Montreal Canadiens, and when hockey season was over, nothing made her happier than going to Ottawa Rough Riders games with Ed and berating the officials in boisterous fashion. After raising eight children, Florence took time to travel, visiting England, Europe, the Middle East, Tunisia, South America, China, Russia, India, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. Her free time was spent volunteering for charities such as the Cancer Clinic and Ottawa Distress Centre, playing bridge with friends, reading, going to the theatre and listening to music. Florence always maintained a positive attitude and was joyful in all the blessings she had been given. She spread that joy to everyone she met with a smile and a kind word. She had an uncompromising belief in the power of prayer. Though she was quiet about her Catholic faith, it moulded her entire life so that her goodness was her most intrinsic quality. Her emotional strength was of Herculean proportions. She believed that everything happened as it should and the reasoning behind all events would become apparent in the afterlife. A strong and independent woman, Florence continues to inspire all of us today. Margaret Ahearn is Florence's daughter.

Frank Ahearn, 53, key link in Boston's comedy scene
[photo]
Mr. Ahearn was a general manager at the Comedy Connection
By Bryan Marquard
During his extended engagement running the Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall, Frank Ahearn managed everything that needed managing. Plates had to be placed just so. Working the door was elevated to an art form. Sometimes even the owners needed oversight. "I used to say, 'I might be the owner, but you're the boss,' and it was true," said Paul Barclay, who co-owned the club in Mr. Ahearn's early years as general manager. "With Frank, I knew my place." A fixture in Boston's comedy scene for nearly two decades, Mr. Ahearn more recently co-owned Tommy's Comedy Lounge with John M. Tobin Jr., a city councilor, and was general manager of Firefly's restaurant in Quincy. He died Monday in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth of complications of two strokes, in December and late last month. Mr. Ahearn was 53 and had lived in Andrew Square in Dorchester for many years.

"He was able to really bridge the gap between kind of the older guys in the scene, the guys who brought the scene to Boston, and the middle and newer guys that have come along," Tobin said in a May interview, posted on YouTube, after the first of two benefit shows in which comedians raised money to defray Mr. Ahearn's expenses. Tobin added that "Frank was always kind of the guy out on the golf course, as a roommate, as a confidant, as a friend. . . . When things go awry, you go to Frank Ahearn, no matter what the issue is."

That was the case with colleagues, employees, and relatives, some of whom Mr. Ahearn hired at the Comedy Connection. "People who worked for him showed him an insane amount of respect," said Dan Lattuada of Bridgewater, who worked in the box office for his uncle at the club. "He gave everybody a chance," said another nephew, John Groneman of Denver, who formerly was a bartender at the Comedy Connection. "We've heard so many stories over the past few days, people saying I am who I am because Frank gave me that job, that opportunity, whatever it was: bartender, waitress, doorman."

Paula Murphy, general manager of the Charles Playhouse, worked for Mr. Ahearn in the 1990s as a waitress and bartender at the Comedy Connection. "You just knew he was the man," she said. "You just knew it. You didn't have to be told it, and you certainly wouldn't be told it by him. He didn't necessarily want to be the center of attention, but fun gravitated to him." She added that although Mr. Ahearn was a behind-the-scenes guy in a business filled with talented comedians, he was "probably funnier than a lot of them."

Francis X. Ahearn grew up in Abington, the youngest of six children. His mother was town clerk, his father was involved in town politics, and the house was often abuzz with parties and political gatherings. "Frank was always attracted to that social part of it," said his sister Sheila Groneman of Silverthorne, Colo., who added that Mr. Ahearn "was an entrepreneur even when he was young." "In high school, he had his own house painting business," she said. "Frank was a born leader. He would take charge and loved to organize."

He graduated in 1975 from Abington High School and four years later from the University of New Haven in Connecticut, from which he received a bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management. Over the next decade, he managed restaurants and a hotel before the Comedy Connection's co-owners hired him when they moved the club into Faneuil Hall in the early 1990s. "It was one of the best decisions we made," Barclay said. "He liked comedy, but he liked comedians even more. They gravitated to him." So did the staff at the Comedy Connection, Barclay said. "All the employees who worked for him were like family," he said. "Not just, 'Hi, how you doing.' Out of his own pocket he would take them out to dinner at the Christmas holidays every year. He would pick up the whole tab himself. He would take them to Foxwoods; he would take them to sporting events. If there was a concert he knew they all wanted to see, he'd get tickets." "That was Frank," said his sister Joellen Lattuada of Rockland, with whom Mr. Ahearn briefly lived when he left a rehabilitation facility after his first stroke. "Frank would do that for people he didn't even know."

Sheila Groneman said her brother "liked to connect people and be connected to people." "What we used to hear from my dad was, 'It's nice to be important but it's important to be nice,'" she said. "That was extremely important to Frank. It didn't matter if you were a Hollywood comedian or a high school math teacher. It was important that people be kind and nice. What was most important was how you treated other people."

At the Comedy Connection, Mr. Ahearn "loved to give somebody local a shot on the stage," his sister said. "He could recognize talent; he could recognize someone's passion and commitment, which was really important. Even to his nieces and nephews he would say, 'If you're going to do something, do it with commitment.'" Among the commitments Mr. Ahearn honored were benefits he organized to raise money for various causes supported by his many friends. Some benefits were annual affairs, and when possible, he tried to make the fund-raising event a golf tournament. An avid golfer, he found a course every Wednesday wherever he was, and the weather had to be miserable to keep him away. "If there was no snow on the ground, Frank was golfing," said Joellen Lattuada.

"He was one of the few guys I've met who had no regrets," Murphy said. "He lived large. He knew everyone. He loved everyone. He laughed hard. He got it all in. We should all be more Frankish." In addition to his two sisters and two nephews, Mr. Ahearn leaves two brothers, William of Rockland and James Michael of Marshfield; and another sister, Maryellen of Cape Canaveral, Fla. A funeral Mass will be said at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Bridget's Church in Abington.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim on October 15, 2009. Marge was born and raised in Altadena, California, and spent many happy summers on Catalina Island. Following the birth of her first son, she attended UCLA where she earned her bachelor's degree in English and then taught elementary school in Brawley, CA, for several years.

After WWII, Marge met Jim, her husband of 58 years, on Catalina Island. They were married in Altadena, CA, in 1951, and lived in Long Beach, CA, where their five children were born, before moving to La Jolla in 1960. She practiced law in La Jolla for several years and eventually moved her practice to downtown San Diego. She also taught legal aspects of real estate at a local community college. Marge loved her work so much that she was still going to her downtown office at the spry age of 84. Marge loved to travel with her "buddy" Jim and kept extensive journals of her trips. Shock as community mourns the death of Fergus Ahern
There was a deep sense of shock and sadness in Boyle this week following the untimely passing of prominent local businessman, Fergus Ahern, who was widely regarded as the driving force behind Boyle Arts Festival. Mr. Ahern's passing late on Sunday night sent shockwaves throughout Boyle, as members of the community struggled to come to terms with the "huge loss" to the town. Mr. Ahern, a native of Patrick Street, Boyle, is survived by his wife, Marian, and daughters, Grainne and Ashling; brothers, Canon Niall and Daniel and sisters, Evelyn and Mary Patricia.

His interests were broad ranging from running a local accountancy firm, Ahern & Company, to spearheading the development of Boyle Arts Festival, to his involvement in local and national politics. He will be best remembered, however, for the significant contribution he made to the arts and for putting Boyle on the map by developing Boyle Arts Festival, which celebrated its 21st year this year. Warm tributes poured in this week for the highly respected Boyle businessman, who was regarded as the driving force behind the development of the Boyle Civic Art Collection over the past 20 years. Administrator with Boyle Arts Festival, Christine Kelly, said there was great sense of shock and loss among committee members following Mr. Ahern's untimely passing. "This year was the 21st year of the festival and it was said to be the best ever to date and that is largely thanks to the commitment and passion shown by Fergus, who was chairman of the festival committee and the driving force behind the festival," Christine said.

The festival committee described Fergus as "the axial on which Boyle Arts Festival pivoted on" and said that he was a pleasure to work with and continually embraced "new ideas, new direction and energies" throughout his chairmanship. "Fergus gave a platform to young classical musicians and other new and emerging artists and talent across all art forms through the festival and he also left a lasting legacy to Boyle through the civic art collection that he built up over two decades.

He will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Marian, and his family and the staff at Ahern's at this sad time; he was a big presence in Boyle and it's hard to think who might replace him," Christine added. Mr. Ahern was also involved in local and national politics and his passions also extended beyond the business and arts world to rugby and to supporting charitable causes.

Describing Mr. Ahern as a "great friend" and a "great supporter" of Fine Gael, Deputy Frank Feighan said that he would be sorely missed in the community of Boyle. He said Fergus had been "highly involved" both locally and nationally with Fine Gael for decades and had stood for election as a senator during the 1980's. "Fergus was larger than life; he was a man who could get things done and he was well respected in his community and around the country," Deputy Feighan said.

Deputy Feighan said that Mr. Ahern's greatest legacy would be his involvement in Boyle Arts Festival and bringing it to national and international prominence. "Fergus had the vision, energy, and enthusiasm to succeed in bringing Boyle Arts Festival to national and international prominence and he will be remembered for that," Deputy Feighan said. Fianna Fail Cllr John Cummins joined in the tributes to Mr. Ahern, who he described as a man who showed "great community involvement". "Fergus was one of the founding members of Boyle Arts Festival and without his stewardship and leadership over the years it wouldn't be as successful as it is today," Cllr Cummins added.

Fianna Fail Cllr Eugene Murphy also paid tribute to Mr. Ahern and extended his sympathies to the Ahern family. Boyle Chamber of Commerce also joined in the expressions of sympathy and tributes paid to the late Fergus Ahern, who served as President of the Chamber in 1983. "His passing has come as a huge shock to everyone and is a huge loss to the town and we wish to extend our condolences to the Ahern family on their loss," Chamber President Jackie Valentine said.

He was predeceased by his mother Nancy, father, Bertie and brother, Rory. His remains will be reposing at Mahon's Funeral Home, Boyle from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, going to St Joseph's Church at 8 p.m. where the Boyle Arts Festival committee members will form a guard of honour. Burial at Assylinn Cemetery following funeral mass 12 noon on Wednesday. Ar dheis D go raibh a anam.

Of San Francisco, CA, formerly of Chevy Chase, MD on November 1, 2010. Mr. O'Hearn was born in the Panama Canal Zone on November 15, 1922, son of the late Matthew Charles O'Hearn and Katherine Courtney O'Hearn of Chevy Chase, MD. Also preceded in death by his brother, Matthew C. O'Hearn, Jr. of Fripp Island, SC. He was a 1940 graduate of Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. He received a medical discharge from the Army during World War II and returned to graduate from Georgetown University. Throughout his career he worked for the Washington Post, the United Fruit Company, and the Bank of California. But his most beloved role—among family, friends, and all who met him—was being "Uncle Jack". Joy had a way of following him wherever he showed up. Whether he was joining in at the "kids table" or singing his glorious renditions of "Good Ship Lolly Pop" or "Chiquita Banana". The original "Debutante's Delight" who knew his way to the annual Cotillion fully tuxedoed and tap dancing across the floor. Oh, Uncle Jack, you will be missed. The next family reunion will simply be a little less fun. Much love from your sisters Kathleen (Babe) O'Hearn Titus of Bethesda, MD and Jean O'Hearn Daisley of Fairfax, VA; and his favorite (and only!) sister-in-law Maureen Salisbury O'Hearn of Fripp Island, SC; and those 14 nieces and nephews and the world of friends who called you "Uncle Jack".

A Memorial Mass will be held at The Church of the Little Flower, Bethesda, MD on December 6, 2010 at 12 Noon. Internment immediately to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.

Babe Ahern, 103, loved life as golfer, country club owner
by Caroline Connors
For Anna May "Babe" Ahern, golf was her life. The proud owner of Evergreen Country Club, Ahern loved to teach and play the game. She excelled at her golf pursuits and also ran a successful business in a male-dominated industry. Ahern, of Evergreen Park, died Dec. 12 after a brief illness. She was 103. Born Nov. 19, 1907, Ahern was one of six children of Anna and Owen Ahern, a Chicago police officer who died when Babe was 12 years old, said her friend Sister Margaret Hoban, LCM.

In 1913, Ahern's mother purchased a 50-acre parcel of land at 91st Street and Western Avenue and built a restaurant on the property. As the business prospered, she expanded her property to include 135 contiguous acres and, with the design expertise of Robert Trent "Bobby" Jones, opened the Evergreen Country Club in 1921. Ahern learned business management by working at her mother's side, but she taught herself to play golf through practice and sheer determination. "After my work was done, I would jump out on the course and play as many holes as possible," Ahern said in a 1991 interview. "I tried to play or practice every day. I wanted to be the best." Eventually, she became the club's champion and embarked on a professional golf career in 1925, teaching golf as a pro until 1955. Many of her trophies and awards are still displayed in the clubhouse, along with photographs that chronicle her career.

When her mother bequeathed her the course in 1966, she assumed the responsibility as owner-operator of Evergreen Country Club—a role that she relished, her friends said. "Babe had a very difficult time as a woman in business, but she was a woman of steel," said Hoban. "She knew everything that was going on there and was extremely defensive of any criticism." Although she was known as a shrewd business person, Ahern had a heart of gold and an infectious sense of humor, Hoban said. "She was extremely kind to people who were less fortunate than her. She had a fiery personality, but underneath that was a tender heart," Hoban said. "At the same time, she said I was too soft-hearted and needed to toughen up."

In addition to golfing, Ahern enjoyed going out for dinner and had a special fondness for her dogs, her friends said. She also loved the village of Evergreen Park, Hoban said. One of Babe's happiest moments occurred under the administration of Evergreen Park Mayor Anthony Vacco, who dedicated a portion of 91st Street as Ahern Country Club Drive. "She was so proud of it," Hoban said. "She was very close to her mother, and she considered the street as an honor to her mother." The honorary designation was later removed by the current administration, Hoban said.

Ahern spent her summers in a home on the golf course and her winters in Scottsdale, Ariz., and, in her later years, she was blessed with the loyal companionship of her caregiver Elsa Sanchez. Despite her advancing age, Ahern remained steadfast in her dedication to the club and its operations. "When she went into the hospital for the last surgery, Babe asked the doctor, 'When am I going home? I've got a golf course to run,'" Hoban said.

Her business interest was not limited to the golf course, her friends said. She owned a number of properties in Evergreen Park and had just recently, at the age of 102, contemplated purchasing the Evergreen Racquet and Fitness Club further west on 91st Street. Her most recent business transaction was the sale of her beloved golf course in November to developer Sterling Bay Cos. for $7.5 million. She also celebrated her 103rd birthday in November with friends at the golf course clubhouse and spent Thanksgiving at the home of Hoban and Sister Joseph Casey, LCM. "She did things her way," Casey said. "There will never be another Babe."

Ahern is survived by many grandnieces and nephews. Visitation was held at the Andrew J. McGann & Son Funeral Home on Dec. 19, followed by a funeral service on Dec. 20. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to A Healthier Evergreen Inc., 2800 W. 95th St., Evergreen Park, IL 60805. [see also: Arthur A. Ahern, Walter T. Ahern]

John Courtney O'Hearn
Resident of San Francisco
Nov. 15, 1922—Nov. 1, 2010. Son of the late Matthew Charles O'Hearn and Katherine Courtney O'Hearn of Chevy Chase, MD. Also preceded in death by his brother, Matthew C. O'Hearn, Jr. of Fripp Island, SC.

A 50 plus year San Franciscan by way of the Panama Canal Zone, NYC, Washington D.C. and for a short stint, Kansas City KC's loss was SF's gain. Though having 14 nieces and nephews (and many more grand and great-grands), he was "Uncle Jack" to all who met him. All were welcome to the million dollar view of the Bay from his Union Street digs, that is if he wasn't down the Peninsula keeping houses warm for his friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Saints Peter & Paul Church, 666 Filbert Street, San Francisco, CA on Monday December 27, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.
