Dr. Alvin Ahern Dr. Alvin Ahern ’34 died December 28 [1997] at the age of 92 [last residence Litchfield, CT]. He received an S.T.B. degree from the Biblical Seminary in New York City, a M.A. degree from New York University, and was ordained in 1939 by the Free Methodist Church. In 1941, he received his Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Education from New York University and returned to Greenville College. He served as GC’s Dean for two years and Vice President for four years. In 1948, Dr. Ahern became the Dean of the School of Religion at Seattle Pacific College. In 1950, he served as the Dean of the Biblical Seminary in New York City. He remained there until 1964 when he joined the Roberts Wesleyan Faculty as Professor of Philosophy. He served there until his retirement in 1971. — The Greenville College Record Summer 1998

Mary Agnes (O'Hearne) Primeau-Perrotte SPRINGFIELD—Mary Agnes (O'Hearne) Primeau-Perrotte, formerly of 39 Falmouth St. died Tuesday at Holyoke Hospital. Born in North Walpole, N.H. she was an 11 year area resident. Her husband, Charles J, Perrotte, died in 1981. She leaves a son, Edward Primeau of Leesburg, Fla.; three daughters, Barbara Brennan of Nashua, N.H., Carol A. Williams of Indian Orchard, and Gail Louise Mike of Bellevue, Neb.; a brother, Walter of Claremont, N.H.; 31 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The service will be Monday afternoon in New Hampshire. There are no calling hours and Tylunas Funeral Home of Chicopee is in charge. Thomas J. Ahern DUDLEY — Thomas J. Ahern, 68, of 24 D'Allessandro Ave. died Sunday at home after a long illness. He leaves his wife of 45 years, Ruth (Crabbe) Ahern; a son, Brian Ahern of North Oxford; a daughter, Colleen Ahern-Szpiler of Northampton; a sister, Elizabeth Ann Exley of Asbury, N.J.; nieces and nephews. Another son, Gary Ahern of Dudley, died in 1972. He was born in Providence, son of James and Agnes (Mahan) Ahern, and was raised in Webster, graduating from Bartlett High School in 1948. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant. Mr. Ahern worked in sales for several years at Knight Chevrolet in Southbridge, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and Ives Laboratory. Previously, he was a textile engraver at Cranston Print Works Co. in Webster. He retired in 1990. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Bartel Funeral Home, 33 Schofield Ave. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery, Cranston, R.I. Marion (Alexander) O'Hern Marion Alexander O'Hern, 95, of Fayetteville died Tuesday at Van Duyn Home and Hospital. Born in Willow Hill, Pa., she lived most of her life in the Syracuse area. She graduated from Syracuse Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1925. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Calvary Chapter 752, the Alumni Association of Syracuse University and Park Central Presbyterian Church. Her husband, William, died in 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Doris Altes of Fayetteville; a son, William A. of Neptune, N.J.; three sisters, Faye Breckenridge of New Cumberland, Pa., and Leta Hussack and Evelyn Crouse, both of Chambersburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Darren O'Hern O'HERN Robert Darren, born Sept. 23, 1967 in Perry, OK to the parents of Robert D. and Alice Faye (Walker) O'Hern. Darren is preceded in death by his mother, Alice Faye. He is survived by his wife, Katy, two daughters, Erin and Faith; father, Robert; cherished step-mother, Donna; and brother, Rusty. Darren was a devoted husband of seven years to Katy O'Hern, and father of two beloved daughters, Erin Blaine, age 5, and Allison Faith, age 7 months. He deeply loved his wife, Katy. He was a loyal and trusted friend, a dependable co-worker, and a loving father and husband. Darren cherished, and was cherished by his family, friends, and co-workers. He was creative and enjoyed singing. He shared his visions of life with us. He took care of things, gladly and willingly. Darren worked very hard to provide a full life for his family. He enjoyed starting home projects but needed encouragement to finish them. His diligence in pursuing his projects often left him sharing his frustrations with all. His sense of honesty was plain-spoken and forthright. Darren looked to the Lord for his guidance and inspiration. He was a man of integrity, sensitivity, and compassion. Darren was large of stature and character. He loved his job as a Midwest City Police Officer, and was a proud and dependable member of the SWAT team. He strongly believed in the team concept, and he was a catalyst in helping to establish the current-day Midwest City SWAT program. His passion and dedication to SWAT was profound and inspiring.Darren was forever prepared to lay down his life to protect others if ever needed. His achievements during his nine year tenure as a police officer were numerous, including the fitness pin, CLEET instructor pin, five year pin, and the Oklahoma City Bombing ribbon. For his heroic life-saving efforts, Darren was posthumously awarded the Life Saving pin. His passing on Sunday, January 11, 1998, marks not a time of sorrow, but a time of celebration of his life for those that loved and admired him. Services — Daily Oklahoman 14 January 1998

Florence C. (Daley) Ahearn Tadakowsky SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. — Florence C. (Daley) Ahearn Tadakowsky, 85, of Safety Harbor and formerly of High Street, Uxbridge, Mass., died Saturday in Mease Countryside Hospital after a long illness. She leaves her husband, Michael Tadakowsky; a son, Terrance Ahearn of Houston; two sisters, Catherine McDonald and Ann Crothers, both of Dennisport, Mass.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was born in Worcester, Mass., daughter of James F. and Cecelia A. (McGrail) Daley, and lived in Uxbridge many years before moving to Florida in 1981. She and her husband also summered many years in Narraganset, R.I. Mrs. Ahearn worked 24 years for the Brewer Co., a deed transfer agent located at the Worcester County Register of Deeds in Worcester, before retiring. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Uxbridge. The funeral will be held Friday from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Road, Uxbridge, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 71 Mendon St., Uxbridge. Robert T. O'Hearn, 67, area carpenter PITTSFIELD—Robert T. O'Hearn, 67, of 46 Paula Ave. died yesterday morning at Charlotte General Regional Hospital in Punta Gorda, Fla. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 5, 1930, son of Thomas H. and Margaret I. Molitor O'Hearn, he was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's Grammar School and a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School. A union carpenter by trade, he was employed for 30 years for various contractors including David J. Tierney Jr. Inc. of Pittsfield and Gilbane Construction, based in Springfield. He also had installed swimming pools for Fox Pools of Dalton. Mr. O'Hearn retired in 1981 because of arthritis, and had spent the last several winters in Florida. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Berkshire County Basketball and Football Referees associations, the Berkshire County Baseball Umpires Association, and past president and coach of the Minor League. He was also a member of the Irish-American Organization. He and his wife, the former Carolyn Ruberto, would have celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary on May 13. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Timothy P. O'Hearn of Williamstown; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Irene Bolduc and Mrs. Margaret T. Donovan, both of Pittsfield. Another son, Robert J. Thomas Edward Ahern Thomas Edward Ahern, 81 of Storrs, husband of Alice (Kennedy) Ahern, died Sunday (February 1, 1998) at the Windham Hospital. He was born on December 7th 1916 in Hartford, son of the late Thomas (E.) and Helen (Tracy) Ahern, and had lived in Storrs the past 50 years. He was a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving from 1943-45 as a technical sergeant with the 368th Fighter Group. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1952 and served as the director of the UCONN Student Union from 1957 until 1982. Mr. Ahern was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Mark Mogayzel of Westford MA; two sisters, Mary Higgins and Barbara McInerney, both of Wethersfield; a niece and her husband, Maureen and Brian Clarke of West Hartford. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday 10 am at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson Street Willimantic, with assembly at the church. Burial will be private in Storrs Cemetary. He was born George Joseph Ahern, the son of Robert P. and Josephine (Noel) Ahern, on Nov. 21, 1922 at Detroit. He was a farm laborer. Fern (Mailman) Ahearn MILFORD — Fern (Mailman) Ahearn, 89, of Milford died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, 1998, at the Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Daniel Ahearn who died in 1972. She is survived by two sons, Michael W. and Paul V. Ahearn, both of Milford; one brother, Keith Mailman of Nova Scotia, Canada; one sister, Connie Wyle of Nova Scotia, Canada and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Hemford, Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of the late Edward W. and the late Anna B. (Ramey) Mailman and lived in Milford for more than 50 years. She was employed as a private-duty nurse in the Greater Milford area for many years retiring several years ago. She also performed volunteer work for the American Red Cross for 50 years. She graduated from the former Leonard Morse Hospital School of Nursing in Natick and belonged to its alumnae association. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She was a World War II U.S. Army nurse having served in England. She is survived by a son, John E. and his wife, Eileen J. Ahearn, of West Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren, Brendan J. and his wife Jennifer Ahearn, of Wyoming, R.I., Michael W. Ahearn, of Brighton and Stephen H. Ahearn, of West Hartford, Conn.; a niece Anne Hagelston; three nephews, Paul, Jack, and James Hagelston. She was the sister of the late Mae Hagelston. Joseph Daniel Ahearn Joseph Daniel Ahearn, 77, died March 4, 1998, in DePaul Medical Center. He was born in Providence, R.I., and was a retired machinist from N.A.R.F. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Fleet Reserve Branch 60. He was a volunteer of DePaul Medical Center. Mr. Ahearn was retired from the U.S. Navy and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Grace "Sue'' Ahearn; six daughters, Susan Sanders of Columbia, Md., Kathleen White of Wellesley, Mass., Marianne Sharkey of Virginia Beach, Margaret Bishop of Naples, Fla., Patricia Ahearn of Fairfax, Va., Michele Kennedy of Clearwater, Fla.; a son, James Ahearn of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother. Born in Everett, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John and Lottie (Howard) Webb. She was a secretarial graduate from Engleside School for Girls in Lynn, Mass. She was a member of Star of the Sea Parish, Shamrock Senior Citizens and the ladies auxiliary of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. He worked as a drafting checker for Lam Associates in Wilmington for two years. Before that he worked for Teledyne Corporation and for Lockheed Martin Company. Born in Cambridge, he attended schools in Arlington and graduated from Somerville High. He had lived in Somerville for 35 years before coming to North Andover 10 years ago. He served with the Air Force during the Korean War. He leaves his wife Anne M. (Bruce) O'Hearn of Andover, daughters Carol A. Arria of Winchester, Janice O'Hearn Fontanella of North Andover and Patricia M. LaRochelle of Worcester, seven grandchildren and many relatives in Scotland. Helen A. (Vincent) Ahearn Helen A. Ahearn, a former bookkeeper and secretary for the Bacchiochi Construction Company, died Monday, March 9, at the Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga. She was 84, and the wife of John J. Ahearn of Carrollton. Born in New Milford on March 6, 1914, she was a daughter of George and Lina Joyce Vincent. A Danburian most of her life, she worked in her early years at the former Bacchiochi Construction in Ridgefield. Mrs. Ahearn was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Carrollton and a former member of St. Joseph's Church, Danbury. She moved to Georgia eight years ago. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, a sister, a brother, two granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. Green Funeral Home in Danbury was in charge of arrangements. Mother of Taoiseach, Julia Ahern, dies in Dublin by Chris Dooley THE death occurred yesterday in Dublin of Mrs Julia Ahern, mother of the Taoiseach and also of the Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North West, Mr Noel Ahern. Mrs Ahern, who was 87, suffered a heart attack on Sunday and was taken to the Mater Hospital where she died early yesterday morning. The Taoiseach cancelled all his engagements for the day. She was predeceased in 1990 by her husband, Con. Although both were from Cork, they met and settled in Drumcondra, Dublin, which was to become the Taoiseach's political base. Her eldest son, Mr Maurice Ahern, said yesterday his mother had remained active up to her death and recently attended a family dinner to mark her 87th birthday at the Berkeley Court Hotel in Dublin. The chairman of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, Dr Rory O'Hanlon, said Mrs Ahern was a well-known and respected member of the party she had served with distinction for many years. “A quite woman of great warmth, she was a great support to her sons in their decision to serve the public and to her husband Cornelius [Con] who was involved in the birth of our nation and predeceased her some years ago,” he said. “It is indeed a matter great sadness that she passed away as this Fianna Fáil-led government reaches the eve of a historic moment in our nation's history.” He expressed his deepest condolences to the family on behalf of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party. Mrs Ahern is survived by three sons and two daughters: Mr Maurice Ahern, Mrs Kathleen Murphy, Mr Noel Ahern TD, Mrs Eileen O'Donovan and the Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern. A fourth son, John, died at age three months. A republican shaped by the War of Inhdependence by Chris Dooley MRS JULIA AHERN followed her son Bertie into Fianna Fáil, but her strong republican views were formed many years before he was born. Her lifelong nationalist ideals were shaped by her experiences growing up on a small farm in west Cork during the War of Independence and subsequent Civil War, in which her family took the republican side. Her eldest son, Mr Maurice Ahern, recalled yesterday how his mother never forgot incidents such as the time the Black and Tans shot all the turkeys on her family's holding in Castledonovan. The action was most likely carried out in response to the failure of the British forces to find some republican activists hiding in the area. “There wasn't much money around then so you can imagine the impact of having your turkeys shot a few months before Christmas,” Mr Ahern said. During the Civil War the family's home became a target for Free State forces who would “turn it upside down” in the knowledge that it was used as a “safe house” for IRA men. She believed those experiences remained relevant to present-day politics, Mr Ahern said. His mother understood why it wasn't helpful to dig up the distant past, but she used to say: “You can go back to my lifetime, I was alive in 1921.” After she moved to Dublin, where she worked as a children's nurse, she met her future husband Con, who also came from a farming and republican background in Cork. Mr Ahern senior, who died in 1990, had fought in the War of Independence as a member of the 3rd Cork Brigade of the IRA. He initially went to Dublin to train for the priesthood but had abandoned the idea by the time the couple met. They married in October 1937 and settled in Church Avenue, Drumcondra, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Had Con Ahern not entertained thoughts of a vocation, it is unlikely he would have ever moved to Dublin. He had been set to inherit his family's 195-acre farm in the Robert's Cove area of Cork. Instead he became a farm manager at All Hallows College, Drumcondra. As was the norm, Mrs Ahern gave up her nursing career on getting married and devoted her energies to raising the couple's five children, Maurice, Kathleen, Noel, Eileen, and the youngest, Bertie, who was born when she was 40. It was only after Bertie became active in Fianna Fáil that Mrs Ahern joined the party. She was an active member of her local cumann and attended meetings up to her death. The front sitting room of her Church Avenue home was the campaign headquarters of a number of elections fought by the future taoiseach until his constituency office on Drumcondra Road was established before the 1987 campaign. According to Mr Maurice Ahern, a low point was undoubtedly the occasion in December 1994 when, he said, a 3 a.m. telephone call to Bertie from Dick Spring informed him that Labour would not after all be going back into coalition with Fianna Fáil. Mrs Ahern had been preparing to attend the Dáil that day to see her son elected Taoiseach. But she lived to see that event two-and-a-half years later. — The Irish Times 7 April 1998

Patrick "Paddy" Francis Ahern General practitioner Carshalton 1969-93 (b Cork 1940; q UCD 1963), died of prolymphocytic leukaemia on 21 February 1998. He was destined by his father to go into banking but resolved to join the army, entering the Royal Army Medical Corps and qualifying at the age of 22, the youngest in Ireland that year. After serving for five years he did further house jobs and then entered general practice. He had a rare sense of humour and many outside interests, which ranged from beekeeping to military history. Earl Lee Ahern Earl Lee Ahern, 79, of Zion, died Monday, June 1 in Zion. He was born May 21, 1919 in Litchfield, Ill. He was employed by the Waukegan Municipal Band for 43 years where he was in charge of transporting the instruments from one location to another for band performances. He was an avid cribbage player and a general contractor. Survivors include his son, John Ahern of Zion; four daughters, Patty Paveglio of Zion, Robin (Davis) Johnson of Paris, Wisc., Maureen (Chuck) Hood of Kenosha, Wis. and Diana (Mike) Leusch of Waukegan; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Collins of Waukegan. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Ahern; his parents; a sister; and two brothers. James P. O'Hearn A private service will be held for James P. O'Hearn, who died June 14 at age 84. Mr. O'Hearn was born June 13, 1914, in Bend and was raised in Spokane. He attended Eastern Washington College and then served in the U.S. Navy from 1933 until 1937. He graduated from Northwest Business College in Portland in 1939 and was an accountant. During World War II, he was a warrant officer in the U.S. Army in Europe and was permanently disabled in a rocket attack. After the war, he lived in his parents' home in Portland. Survivors include his brothers, Roderick of Hazel Dell, Wash., and Donald of Beaverton. Interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Thomas E. O'Hern Mr. O'Hern. known to his friends as "the smiling Irishman," was born on May 26, 1918 in Chicago. He died on July 10, 1998 at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes. Marion H. (Ahern) Toivonen MAYNARD — Marion H. (Ahern) Toivonen, 76, formerly of Maynard, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Westford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Westford. She was the wife of the late Lauri Toivonen, who died in 1996. Born in Marlborough, the daughter of the late Daniel and Alice (O'Connell) Ahern, she lived in Maynard for about 50 years. She married her husband in 1948, and helped in the family business, Lauri's Flooring, for a number of years. She was later employed at Baybank in Maynard, before retiring in 1987. She leaves three daughters, Nancy Shoesmith, of Simi Valley, Calif., Susan Helenius-LaPorte of Westford, and Deborah Toivonen of Groton; five grandchildren. Rosemary (Ahern) Cochrane ENFIELD — Rosemary (Ahern) Cochrane, 79, formerly of this town, died on July 14 in Wethersfield. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., she lived in St. Louis, MO., West Hartford, Bloomfield, and here for 10 years. She was a communicant of Old St. Andrew's Church in Bloomfield, where her husband, the Rev. Archie J. Cochrane, was the rector for many years. He died in 1994. She leaves three sons, John of Plymouth, Minn., Archie of Somers, and George of Chemung, N.Y. Patricia (Ahearn) Page Copp Hyannis - Patricia (Ahearn) Page Copp, 78, a homemaker, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Dr. Edgar L. Copp and J. Montgomery Page. Born in Denver, she was educated at Madam's of the Sacred Heart School in Virginia and she attended the University of Virginia School of Engineering. She lived her early years in Colorado, in Virginia and at Old Silver Beach on Cape Cod. In 1938, she married Mr. Page and moved to Milton, where she lived until the early 1970s. After Mr. Page's death and her marriage to Dr. Copp, she moved to Falmouth, where he transferred his practice. In the early 1980s, they moved to Florida and lived there until his death in 1985. Joseph L. Ahern Joseph L. Ahern of West Roxbury, a welfare assistance supervisor, died Wednesday at Mass. General Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 64. Born and raised in Boston, he graduated from Dorchester High School in 1952, Boston College in 1956, where he was a member of the track and field and swim teams, and Massachusetts State Teacher's College, where he obtained his master's degree in teaching. Mr. Ahern served with the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He worked for the state Division of Welfare Assistance for 30 years until retiring in 1997. Mr. Ahern also served as guidance counselor at the Boston Skill Center. He was a member of the Catholic League of Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale, the Knights of Columbus in West Roxbury and a fourth degree member of Mount Pleasant Council. Mr. Ahern was also an avid reader. He is survived by a wife, Nydia (Castro) of West Roxbury; a son, Joseph L. Jr. of West Roxbury; a brother, Taylor J. of Wollaston; and several nieces and nephews. Patricia (Beech) Ahearn Patricia Ahearn passed away at the Agape Manor on Thursday, August 20, 1998 at the age of 78 years. Pat is survived by daughter Susan Schrader and her husband Peter of Airdrie; two sons, Bill and his wife Terri of Calgary, Larry and his wife Sharon of Calgary. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kari, Lori, Michael, Tammy, Connie, Lee, Marie, Sean and Ryan; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pat is also survived by one brother Norman Beech of Calgary; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Ahearn, Lois Brosh and Ada Epp; and one brother-in-law Jerry Ahearn. She was predeceased by her husband Ed and one brother Stanley Beech. Pat graduated from Nursing School in 1940 from the Calgary General Hospital. Margaret A. (O'Hern) Rubesh Margaret A. Rubesh, 67, of Palmer died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. She attended Palmer schools and graduated from Palmer High School in 1949. She worked at telephone companies in St. Paul and Grand Island after she graduated. She married Carroll Rubesh on Sept. 17, 1956, in St. Paul. They moved to Iowa in 1957. In 1966, they moved back to Palmer, where she worked at Lemmerman's Hatchery for a time. She then worked at St. Francis Hospital until retiring in 1994. She enjoyed crossword puzzles. Survivors include one son, Greg Rubesh of Grand Island; three daughters, Marcia Earnhart of St. Paul and Sara (Mrs. Robert) Suggs and Brenda (Mrs. Rick) Rodocker, both of Grand Island; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one sister, Patricia Williams of Fullerton; and two brothers, Barney O'Hern of Palmer and Tim O'Hern of Denver. Roseanna (Hardin) O'Herren Roseanna Hardin-O'Herren, a native of Portola Valley and longtime resident of Menlo Park, died August 12 in Reno, Nevada, after a sudden and brief illness. She was 52. Lawrence J. Ahern Lawrence J. Ahern, 76, died Tuesday, Sep. 29, 1998, after a brief illness. Born in Meridan, Conn., Mr. Ahern had been an area resident since 1960. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and was a member of the American Federation of Teachers. In 1987 he retired as regional vice president of the International Chemical Workers Union. Tom Ahern Tributes were paid this week to Tom Ahern who was buried in his native Athea last Friday. Mr Ahern was a well-known and highly respected member of the Fianna Fail organisation in West Limerick and served as a member of Limerick County Council from 1985 to 1991. He was only defeated by 22 votes in 1991 when he took to the hustings for a second term. "He is a great loss to us in the Fianna Fail party," West Limerick TD, Michael Collins said. "But he is a greater loss to his wife Eileen and to his daughter and sons. Tom was a very straight man who had his own ideas. He had his beliefs and he believed in them." A member of Fianna Fail for over 30 years, Mr Ahern had served as chairman of the local cumann, as chairman of the Comhairle Cumainn and as chairman of the Comhairle Dail Ceantair, Deputy Collins revealed. Most recently, Mr Ahern had been nominated as president-for-life of the constituency organisation. Described as an outgoing, sociable man, Mr Ahern ran a farm and a building contracting business. He was also deeply interested in Irish music and traditional culture and held All-Ireland medals with his wife Eileen for old-time waltzing. He was also a dancer with the award-winning Athea Set Dancers and was recognised locally as a very fine singer. A non-drinker, Mr Ahern was president of the Athea Pioneer Centre for many years. He played football with Athea as a young man. During his term of office as a member of Limerick County Council, he took a particular interest in housing matters and was a member of Athea housing committee. His death at his home at Parkana on October 6 was unexpected and large numbers attended both the removal to St Bartholemew's Church and the concelebrated Requiem Mass led by Kiltegan Father, Jerry Roche, assisted by Mr Ahern's cousin, Fr Noel Moran, Canon Patrick Kelly, PP, Athea and five other priests. Mr Ahern was buried at Holy Cross cemetery. Francis R. A'Hern Francis R. A'Hern, 82, owner of A'Hern Cycle Co., died Wednesday at his son's home in Ft. Meyers, Fla. Mr. A'Hern retired to Plantation, Fla., many years ago, but had lived in La Grange for 20 years. Mr. A'Hern established the bicycle company in 1944 and moved it from Chicago to Lyons in the 1960s. He was a past member of the executive board of the National Bicycle Dealers Association and a founding member and past president of the Chicago Area Bicycle Dealers Association. He also was the past president of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce, the Lyons Lions Club and the Plantation Florida Lions Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Fran A'Hern Smith and Karin Sikora; four sons, Terry R., Richard E., Kevin C. and Timothy C.; and nine grandchildren. Elizabeth G. Ahern DENNIS—Elizabeth G. Ahern, 81, a retired nurse, died Friday at Eagle Pond Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Arlington and was a graduate of the Mount Auburn School of Nursing. Miss Ahern received her master's degree from Boston College and worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was a longtime parishioner of Holy Trinity Church in Harwich. Miss Ahern is survived by three sisters, Christine McManus of Arlington, Louise Cassie of Salem and Mary Lannigan of Billerica; three brothers, John Ahern of Calif., Robert Ahern of Bedford and Francis Ahern of Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. Robert "Bob" Ahern AHERN, ROBERT "BOB", 77, of Top of the World, Clearwater, formerly of Homosassa, died Tuesday (Nov. 3, 1998) at home. He came here 27 years ago from his native Boston. He was a plumber for Ahern Plumbing of Largo and a former member of St. Jerome Catholic Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Lions Club, Homosassa, and past president of the Lions Club, Largo, the Knights of Columbus, Jamaica Plain, Mass., Pinellas Vocational Instruction, the Norfolk Golf Club and the Midstate Golf Association, Homosassa. Survivors include his wife, Anne; four sons, David M., Homosassa, Robert J. Jr., Paul F. and James E., all of Clearwater; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Richard J. O'Hearn Richard J. O'Hearn, a national marketing services director for Gillette Co., died Thursday in his home in New Seabury. He was 67. Born in Brookline, Mr. O'Hearn graduated from Brown University in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in English. He served in the Marines during the Korean War. Mr. O'Hearn lived in Lynnfield for 20 years, where he was a founder of the Junior Sports Association and a member of the town recreation commission. He worked for Gillette for about 30 years as a national marketing services director. An avid golfer, Mr. O'Hearn retired in 1988 to Vero Beach, Fla., where he was a member of the Vero Beach Country Club. He recently moved to New Seabury. He leaves his wife, Kathryn R. (Rodham); three sons, Mark J. of Hobe Sound, Fla., Brian K. of Westborough, and Peter J. of Ashland; a daughter, Anne Marie Skafas of Bradford; a brother, William J. of Nantucket and Tucson; and 11 grandchildren. James W. Ahern WORCESTER — James W. Ahern, 80, of 411 Massasoit Road, a wiredrawer for many years, was stricken ill and died Saturday at home. His wife, Charlotte M. (Pierce) Ahern, died last year. He leaves three brothers, Cornelius P. Ahern of New York City, Edward J. and Thomas F. Ahern, both of Worcester; two sisters, Mary A. Boyda and Alice M. Ahern, both of Worcester; nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces; and a close friend, Winifred McGrath of Worcester. He was born in Worcester, son of Cornelius and Mary (Fennessy) Ahern. He graduated from St. John's High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in Europe, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. Mr. Ahern was a wiredrawer at New England High Carbon Wire Co. in Millbury, where he worked for 35 years. He retired in 1982. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Charles F. Minney Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Millbury. The funeral will be held Wednesday from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Anita Catherine (O'Hearn) Knuehl Anita Catherine O'Hearn Knuehl, 76, of Melbourne, died at 9:29 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a retired teacher for Campbell County High School, and formerly taught at Dayton High School. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Camp Springs; Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 3205, Alexandria, where she formerly held various offices including president; Kentucky Education Association; Kentucky Higher Education Association; and Valley Homemakers Club. She was one of many teachers who helped establish the Future Homemakers of America in Kentucky in 1945, and formerly served as a 4-H advisor. Her husband, Robert Charles Knuehl, died in May. Survivors include sons, Robert Timothy Knuehl of Melbourne and John Thomas ''Tom'' Knuehl of California; a daughter, Marietta Knuehl of Melbourne; and four grandchildren. Harold Francis "Mickey" O'Hearn Harold Francis "Mickey" O'Hearn, 73, of Shawmut Street, a retired Fall River firefighter, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Mr. O'Hearn was the husband of Margaret T. (Mackey) O'Hearn, with whom he celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on June 28. Born in Fall River, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Hurley) O'Hearn, Mr. O'Hearn was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a 1943 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. O'Hearn was employed as a Fall River firefighter for 20 years until he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Fall River Fire Department Retirees Association and the Over the Hill Gang in Fall River. Mr. O'Hearn was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Survivors include his widow; two sons, the Rev. Michael J. T. O'Hearn of Fall River and Brian J. O'Hearn of Fall River; one daughter, Patricia O'Hearn-Cabral of Fall River; three brothers, Raymond O'Hearn of Swansea; James P. O'Hearn of Fall River and John O'Hearn of Titusville, Fla.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He also was the twin brother of the late Mary O'Hearn-Dale. Lillian M. (Ritchot) Ahern Lillian M. Ahern, 96, of Angell Avenue died Wednesday at a Portland nursing home following a brief illness. She was born in Portland, a daughter of George and Isabelle Cogger Ritchot. She was a graduate of Portland High School. She was employed for 33 years by New England Telephone Co. as an accounting clerk, retiring in 1968. Mrs. Ahern was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Mercy Hospital Auxillary, The Visitation Sodality, Legion of Mary of Holy Cross Church and professed in the third order of the Carmelites. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church. Her husband, Joseph H. Ahern, died in 1934. Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Gladu of Lakeland, Fla. and Shirley Carson of Falmouth, seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Raphael Joseph "Ray" O'Hearn He was a Seattle native, born Nov. 5, 1908, died Nov. 25, 1998. A graduate of Seattle College High School Division and the U. of W. School of Business Administration. During World War II, he served in the Pacific as an officer in the U.S. Navy, and remained in the active Naval Reserve until 1964. He had a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Customs Service from which he retired in 1972 as U.S. Treasury Agent-in-Charge, Chicago, IL. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie McCarthy O'Hearn; brother Maurice V. O'Hearn of Atherton, Ca.; daughters Maureen and Betsy; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren. Mary Elizabeth Ahern Retired Auditor Dies in Carroll County Mary Elizabeth Ahern, 85, of Chariton died of complications of osteoporosis Monday at Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she resided since 1996. No services are planned. The cremains will be interred at Grimes Cemetery in Chariton at a later date. Miss Ahern was born in Chariton and lived most of her life in Des Moines, where she taught sign language at the Elizabeth Ahern School for the Deaf. Her late brother, Leland Ahern, founded the school in 1965. She is survived by a brother, James Ahern, and a sister, Edith Ahern-Mathews, both of Des Moines.
