Margaret (Ahearn) Cafarelli
Margaret (Ahearn) Cafarelli of Dorchester, a former employee of the Boston Public School Department, died Jan. 13 of a brief illness at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She was 81. For 19 years, Mrs. Cafarelli was a cafeteria worker for Boston public schools at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in Dorchester. "She loved working with the kids and interacted well with them," said her son, Ralph Cafarelli of Belmont. One of her first jobs after graduating from high school was working in Filene's Department Store in Boston as a saleswoman. This job fit her, said her son, because she worked well with other people. She also loved to shop at the store for great clothing, said Barbara Cafarelli, her daughter-in-law, who recalled that Mrs. Cafarelli was always well dressed. She would "put more money back into the store than she took out in wages," joked her sister, Dorothy Farrell of Milton. "She went horseback riding once and bought the whole outfit and only wore it once. She did the same thing when she went on a ski trip. She bought the whole outfit for one trip," said Farrell, remembering Mrs. Cafarelli's spending habits as a young woman. Mrs. Cafarelli was also "a great people person," said her son. "She could strike up a friendship in half a second. She had a gift." "My favorite thing to do in the world is to talk to people," he recalled her telling him shortly before her death.

Born in 1924, Mrs. Cafarelli was a lifelong resident of Savin Hill. She graduated from the former Girls High School of Boston. After marrying Ralph J. Cafarelli in 1953, she continued to live in her childhood home, which became her children's house as well. Mrs. Cafarelli chose to stay at home to raise her five children, but she kept busy by helping run the bingo fund-raisers at St. William's Parish in Dorchester, where her children attended school. She enjoyed bowling with her daughter, Marilyn, in a women's league at the Lucky Strike bowling alley in Dorchester. When her sons grew older, she learned to drive so that she could take them to their baseball and hockey games. She loved watching children play sports, and learned the rules to understand the games her children were playing, said her son. "If there was a Hall of Fame for parents my mother would be in it. Her kids wouldn't even have to nominate her for it because everyone else would," said her son.

In addition to her husband, son, and sister, Mrs. Cafarelli leaves two daughters, Marilyn Panzino of Quincy and Carolyn Cafarelli of Dorchester; two more sons, William of Houston and James of Canton; another sister, Mary Mooney of Stoughton; and four grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Blessed Mother Teresa Parish in Dorchester. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.

He left an indelible stamp on Foxboro
Former FHS principal Ahern dies at age 83
Flags were flying at half-staff this week for John J. Ahern, a native son who left an indelible stamp on both Foxboro schools and community at large. Mr. Ahern died Tuesday at Caritas Norwood Hospital after a period of declining health. He had just turned 83 on April 8. Born on April 8, 1922, he was the son of the late Timothy Ahern and Annie (Desmond) Ahern, both of whom had emigrated from Ireland, and was raised on Lakeview Road, where he lived his entire life until entering the hospital several months ago.

He was a 1940 graduate of Foxboro High School, serving as class president and gaining renown for both his academic performance and athletic skills, which were considerable. He was a 1947 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, having returned to the school after serving in the armed forces for three years during World War II. As a result of the interruption, he received his master's degree in education from Columbia University that same year.

Mr. Ahern was best known as principal of Foxboro High School, a post he held for 15 years, from 1957 until retiring at an early age in 1972. At the time he spoke of being physically and emotionally tired, adding he was drained by the responsibility for thousands of vulnerable teenagers. "Each of us has just so much vitality, and I feel I have given what I can," he said. In fact, Mr. Ahern had attempted to resign five years earlier, at the close of the 1967 school year—a time when he was seriously contemplating a mid-life calling to the priesthood. However, he was held in such high esteem, both by faculty at the high school and in the wider community, the School Committee refused to accept his resignation and instead insisted he take a year's leave of absence. He agreed, and subsequently returned for three more years at Foxboro High.

When he permanently retired in 1972, more than 400 friends, colleagues and former students turned out at Lake Pearl Ballroom for a testimonial dinner. The surprise announcement that evening was that the town's junior high school, known previously as the Intermediate School, would be named the John J. Ahern Middle School in his honor. Keynote speaker was Rev. Stephen Weaver, former pastor of Bethany Congregational Church who returned to Foxboro for the occasion. Weaver that night referred to the guest of honor as "a student's principal" and one of the most respected citizens ever to walk the streets of Foxboro.

During the course of his long and productive life, few doubted that assessment. Having attended many of Foxboro's former neighborhood schools—including the Everett School at the corner of Main and Cross streets, the Center School at the current Town Hall site and the high school, now the Igo Elementary School—his first teaching job was at the Spaulding Institute in Peoria, Ill., where he also served as baseball coach. But after just one year in the Midwest, he returned to Foxboro in 1948 as a science teacher at the junior/senior high school. He also served as basketball coach and was assistant to football coach John Certuse, who was then turning out state championship squads. He was named assistant to high school principal Winfield C. Potter in 1953 and four years later was appointed to the principal's post, which at that time paid $4,100 a year.

Very much a professional educator, he also took quiet pride in his military service. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, as a radioman and gunner aboard a B-17 bomber, and flew many combat missions over occupied Europe.

In his retirement, Mr. Ahern cultivated a wide range of interests, and in recent years was a seasonal fixture at the community farm stand on Commercial Street, working to benefit the Foxboro Discretionary Fund. Deeply religious, he was active at St. Mary's Church and when the wider Catholic Church opened the Mass to lay participants in the 1960s, he was among the first lectors at St. Mary's. A lifelong bachelor, he is survived by a sister, Mary Welch and her husband, both of Allentown, Pa.; and had been predeceased by another sister, Margaret Ahern.

Calling hours were scheduled for today (April 28) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Roberts & Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church, Carpenter Street, followed by burial with Air Force honors at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to the John J. Ahern Scholarship Fund, c/o Spillane & Spillane, 83 Mechanic St., Foxboro, MA 02035.

Teenager mourned at funeral
17-year-old remembered for his friendly manner
Only two weeks before he was to start his senior year at St. Charles East High School, Chris Ahern was laid to rest Wednesday. The 17-year-old, who was killed in a car accident Saturday night near Charlestowne Mall, was remembered as a teenager whose friendliness was evident. The four teens who were in Ahern's car at the time of the accident were at the funeral service, held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in St. Charles. The Daily Herald covered the funeral with the Ahern family's approval.

Chris Ahern wasn't the type of teenager worried that others would think he wasn't cool. Instead, he went out of his way to say "hi" to people—even a priest who has watched many young people pretend not to know him outside of church, the Rev. Bob Hoffman recalled at Ahern's funeral Mass Wednesday morning. "Such was the nature of Chris," Hoffman said, "to go out of his way to connect and say 'hi.'" Addressing the dozens of students at the funeral, Hoffman advised them to respect their parents when they express concern about their safety. The 17-year-old St. Charles East High School student died Saturday night after crashing his car into a tree near Charlestowne Mall. "Your parents will be more anxious and more cautious with you as a result," Hoffman said. "They don't want anything to happen to you."

[photo] Alex Mata, 17, center, and other pall bearers carry the casket of 17-year-old Chris Ahern into a waiting hearse outside St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Wednesday. Mata was one of four teens injured in the St. Charles car crash that killed Ahern Saturday night.

St. Charles school district Superintendent Barbara Erwin called the accident "a wake-up call" at Monday's school board meeting. "Life is so fragile," Erwin said, asking those at the meeting to observe a moment of silence. "We need to do everything we can to help our young people." The four teens who were in Ahern's car at the time of the accident wept during the funeral service, held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Alexis Lata, 17, and Bailey Sone, 15, attended in wheelchairs. The other passengers, Alex Mata, 17, and Jose Rodriguez, 16, served as pallbearers. Rodriguez read a Bible passage during the Mass. Mata had a bandage over his left eye. Carrie Hogan, Ahern's aunt, said she placed in his casket a pair of Chicago Cubs earrings that Ahern bought her when she took him and his friends to a ballgame a few years ago.

Ahern was to begin his senior year later this month. He moved from Schaumburg to St. Charles two years ago to live with his father and spent the past few months working as a lifeguard at Pottawatomie Pool in St. Charles and bussing tables at a banquet hall to save money for college. Family members said he hoped to study architecture or engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Police are still investigating the accident. An accident reconstruction expert is trying to determine the approximate speed of Ahern's vehicle at the time of the crash, police spokesman Paul McCurtain said. "Speed appears to be a contributing factor" of the accident, McCurtain said.

Irishman found dead in freezer is buried
The Irishman whose battered body was found in a freezer in an apartment in Portugal was buried yesterday. A small crowd of mourners attended the requiem Mass for Michael 'Danzer' Ahern, 38, in the Church of the Ascension in Gurranabraher, Cork. They were led by his teenage sons Daniel and Stephen. A photograph of their father was placed on his coffin.

Mr Ahern was viciously beaten and shot four times in the head before being stuffed in a chest freezer in an apartment on the Algave resort of Albufeira on September 15. It is suspected that Ahern, who was known to gardaí and held a number of convictions as a drug dealer, fell foul of a crime boss in Portugal who ordered his killing. But celebrant Fr John Manley told mourners that it was not appropriate for people to judge. God is merciful and compassionate, he said. Fr Manley said the Ahern family had suffered considerably following Michael's death. But the kindness of friends and neighbours has eased their pain, he added.

"God is always forgiving and merciful. Family and friends are always concerned about salvation," he said. "But our saviour Jesus is 1,000 times more concerned. He would not have us judge anyone. We must not try to place limits on God's mercy and compassion. No matter what happens God is on people's side. It is not the will of God that such things would happen."

Daniel and Stephen's school friends from the North Monastery formed a guard of honour as their father's coffin was carried from the church. Their father's remains were buried afterwards in St Catherine's Cemetery in Kilcully.

Danzer Ahern was known to be associated with one of the city's most powerful drug gangs before setting up his own operation. Five men, four Irish and a Briton, are still in custody in Lisbon and Portimao in connection with his murder.

Kathy Ahern
Catalina Fleet 21 lost one of its cherished sailors when longtime member Kathy Ahern died on December 28, 2005. Together with her husband, skipper Walt, they sailed their 30' Catalina Rhapsody to countless outings, attended many potluck dinners and Catalina meetings. Kathy held many positions on the Fleet's board including Outings chairman, and event chairman for the fleet's 30th anniversary celebration aboard the Windy schooner. Walt & Kathy received the Catalina Fleet's highest honor when Rhapsody was named Boat of the Year in 1993. Always one of the first to volunteer for so many of the fleet events, Kathy pulled together one of the most successful and truly zany outings several years ago in the form of a scavenger hunt. Kathy rounded up a dozen Polaroid cameras, assigning one per boat, with the requirement that each boat had to solve a riddle, sail to a harbor and find the clue. The teams were then required to record their findings in the most creative photos possible. This particular outing found its Catalina members looking for clues in the Burnham Park Yacht Club's men's room, the wall of the locks, and the hunt also involved some mast climbing. The winning team (aboard Allegro) spiced up its photos with a few ladies' brassieres.

Kathy was a deft sail handler and managed the foredeck work with ease. Although Kathy and Walt have always been the ultimate hosts on Rhapsody, they had a couple unofficial rules for their guests: No fast food was to be brought aboard, and their sailing days must include a sense of adventure. No "tourist" sailing. We will miss Kathy's bright smile, her laughter, and quick wit. To our wonderful friend, fair winds and smooth sailing.

Kathleen (Cronin) Ahern
Kathleen Ahern worked as a librarian for the Barrington Area Library for 22 years, then volunteered her time in retirement to help open a library for Holy Family Catholic Academy in Inverness. Before the academy opened in 2002, Mrs. Ahern bought materials and furnishings, selected books and automated the card catalog for the school's new library. When it opened, she was a volunteer librarian and read stories to children. “She blew everyone's mind with what she did over there,” said her husband, Walter. “She was a go-getter in a humble way. She wouldn't take credit for anything, but she single-handedly did a lot of amazing things.”

Mrs. Ahern, 70, of Inverness died Wednesday, Dec. 28, from cancer at Advocate Good Shepher Hospital in Barrington. The library at Holy Family was dedicated in her name Dec. 8. Mrs. Ahern was born in Chicago and grew up in South Shore. She graduated from Loretto Academy in 1952. She attended Mundelin College, then a women's school next to Loyola University, where her husband attended school. They rode the same train to classes and began dating. Mrs. Ahern graduated in 1956, and they were married in 1957.

As her six children grew, she worked in the English department at Buffalo Grove High School, helping students write essays. She also volunteered in the library at St. Theresa School in Palatine and began taking library science classes. She received a master's in library science from Northern Illinois University in 1983. “She had six children, a house in Inverness to take care of, two golden retrievers and a cat, and she found time to go get her master's degree,” her husband said. “She was a strong woman.” She retired as a librarian at the Barrington Area Library in 2001 but regretted the decision, telling her husband that she flunked retirement. “She loved a challenge and always wanted a project to dig into,” he said.

Mrs. Ahern was very involved with her grandchildren and was known for her thoughful Christmas and birthday presents. “She knew everything about them and they adored her,” her husband said. She returned from library conferences with autographed books for her grandchildren and gave each of them a Christmas ornament every Thanksgiving, bought during the couple's travels to Europe. She was described by her husband as a “no-fear type of sailor” on Lake Michigan. “The waves would be high, the wind would be high, and she'd be out there doing the deck work,” he said. “In between, she'd run down into the cabin to bring food and drinks to our guests.” “She was very friendly and always had a smile,” her husband said. “Little things didn't bother her at all. She was a really cute lady and very well loved.”

Other surviviors include three daughters, Mary Ann Stubitz, Carol Thelen and Nancy Gelpke; three sons, Jim, Paul and Ted; a brother, Richard Cronin; and 18 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2525 W. Palatine Rd., Inverness.
