Sally had two younger brothers, William and James, whom both predeceased her. After attending college at Wayne State University, Sally met Roy Peters whom she married on November 8th, 1938. The two moved on to the University of Nebraska where Roy attained his M.D. degree in 1943. Gertrude (Ahern) Haley
Gertrude Haley, widow of the judge murdered in a famed shootout and attempted jailbreak at the Marin County Civic Center in 1970, has died. She was 98 and died Wednesday of old age, said her niece, Maureen Thomas. Mrs. Haley was the daughter of a pioneering Marin railroad engineer, James "The Bullet" Ahern. She lived in San Rafael for most of her life. She married a classmate from San Rafael High School, Harold J. Haley. He later served as San Rafael city attorney, prosecutor in the Marin County district attorney's office and finally a Marin Superior Court judge. The couple had three daughters.

On August 7, 1970, shortly before he was to retire, Judge Haley presided over a hearing that related to the case of the so-called Soledad Brothers—a group of prison inmates, including black revolutionary and author George Jackson, accused of killing a prison guard. Jackson's brother Jonathan, 17, entered the courtroom with a carbine, gave guns to three inmates who were present for the hearing, and took Judge Haley and other court personnel hostage, intending to swap them for his brother's freedom. The inmates began shooting when confronted by police in the parking lot, and in the firefight Judge Haley was killed, along with Jackson and two inmates. Five other people were wounded.

Her husband's death was the great tragedy of her life, but Mrs. Haley endured it with fortitude, said retired Marin District Attorney Bruce Bales, a lifelong friend. "She was a very strong person and very dignified, and she was very strong in hearing the news and very strong afterward," he said.

Mrs. Haley devoted her later years to travel, golf at her beloved Peacock Gap Golf Course, and to her 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two daughters, Joan Fennone of Novato and Patricia Davis of Grass Valley. Her other daughter, Carol Atkinson, died 10 years ago. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at St. Raphael Church in San Rafael at 11 a.m. [see also: Alice Laura (Ahern) Kirby]

Jack Ahern 10th Dec 1917 - 14th September 2002
One of Marlboroughs most passionate cricketers passed away recently, writes Mick Jellyman of the Marlborough Express. Jack was a keen sportsman and played Rugby, Lawn Bowls and other sports, but cricket was his first love. He played the game and was successful. He was involved in organising and coaching school boy cricket for the Marlborough Cricket association for many years. A number of Marlborough boys who went on to become rep cricketers had him to thank for as foundations for their later cricketing careers were well laid. It was a source of satisfation and pride to see this reward for earlier efforts.

Jack was born in Havelock to William and Mary Ahern. The youngest of six, he spent the first five years of his life in the Wakamarina where his father farmed. They were special years for Jack and he never lost his love for that area. The family moved to Main St. in Blenheim where he attended Blenheim Primary School. He excelled at sport even at that early age. In 1933 he enrolled in Marlborough College. He was to make an impact in college, captaining the 1st XI and the first XV and excelling at athletics. On leaving school he went to work in JE Thomas's menswear

At the outbreak of WW2 Jack enlisted in the army. He served in the New Zealand Army divisional supply unit in Egypt, the Middle East and Italy. (He later kept up his interests with the Returned Services Association, serving on the exectuive. He was granted Life membership of the RSA in 1990) After returning from the war Jack worked in Girlings Menswear , then Farmers Menswear, finally opening his own business in Market street North in Blenheim.

In 1952 he married Memorie Hahn from Picton. Theirs was a life long partnership of 50 years. They have 2 children Ian (Australia) and Lavina White (Blenheim) and 4 Grand Daughters . [The Obit goes on the state many and various sporting successes throughout the many years he continued to be involved in sports/clubs in Blenheim] . . . We who knew him appreciated his worth as both a sportsman and a good Marlborough Man.

FINAL SALUTE
He Was Great With Dogs and Greater With Humans
Aside from his wife, Mike O'Hearne most loved his dogs. When he and his wife, Diane, got married in 1992, he had 15 golden retrievers. "I had three dogs, which I though was a lot," she said from the family home in Yacolt. O'Hearne died Oct. 25 of pancreatic cancer. He was 61. He bred hunting dogs that were sold all over the country. He reached the upper echelons in competitions that tested the dogs' ability as retrievers. A row of silver plates from the Master National Retriever Club lines his wall. The tests required dogs to find fallen birds and to find planted birds by obeying hand signals and whistles from their owners a distance away. The dogs had to swim through ponds and trudge across ditches. "He loved his dogs, but he controlled them," said his friend, Allen Thomas, veteran outdoor writer for The Columbian.

O'Hearne had a dog named Devil, who wasn't easy to train. "After a rough day he'd go out there and sit in the kennel with Devil, just to let him know he still loved him," Thomas said. Thomas bought a dog from O'Hearne in 1988 after searching for a master hunting dog trainer. "Here I was looking up and down the coast, and there's this guy in Washougal," where O'Hearned lived before he married. Sometime after Thomas bought his golden retriever, Amber, he called O'Hearne. Amber was less than stellar in training. "I'm not worried about the dog, I'm worried about you," O'Hearne said. "He thought he could do anything," Thomas said. O'Hearne never gave up on a dog. "He'd take a mediocre dog and put his best into that," Thomas said. And not just for his own animals. "He'd really give up his time if someone needed help. He'd set aside his dogs," and Thomas said he did that for him.

He was generous with more than dogs. O'Hearne helped rebuild the Wa-Ri-Ki Kiwanis camp for disadvantaged children, with a little help from his friends. He was a fleet manager for Clark Public Utilities. He retired in 2000. "He was always commandeering PUD people who know a lot about construction to fix stuff up there," Thomas said. But nobody minded. "He was just hugely gregarious," Thomas said. A big, boisterous Irishman, no one could be in the same room with O'Hearne and not know it. "He's a real man's man," Diane said. "A guy that's well respected and well loved by lots of men."

He also supported his wife as she trained dogs alongside him in a sport that's dominated by men. "There's a huge hole in my heart," Diane said. "He was just always considerate and loving, and he just always told me how much he loved." Diane met O'Hearne when she sought out someone to train her dogs. Later, he told her that when he met her he thought, "I'm going to marry that lady." That's a little too romantic for Diane to accept without skepticism. "But he did like my dogs," she said.
