Ellen Aloysia Ahern
She spent her final four years in Ottawa living quietly in a retirement home, but for most of her life, Judge Ellen Aloysia Ahern was anything but retiring. Ahern, known as Allie, died Friday in Ottawa at age 93. Prominent in Halifax, where she lived for many years, she was known for her work in business and volunteer organizations. Her husband, the late John Edward Ahern, was mayor of Halifax in the 1940s. The first woman to be appointed a judge of the Citizenship Court of Canada, in 1966, Ahern was named to the Order of Canada in 1973. In her eight years as a citizenship judge, before she retired in 1974, she took the court all around the province, said her daughter Patricia Bennett of Gloucester. ''Now they make them all go to Halifax,'' Bennett said. ''She was extremely interested in new Canadians, and she personally interviewed each one who came through her court,'' said Bennett, who was Ahern's only child. Ahern had five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, many of whom live in the Ottawa area. A graduate of the Maritime Business College in Halifax, Ahern worked before her judicial career in law offices and the insurance industry, holding a full-time job most of her life.

She was very active in the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women, including a stint as national president in 1950 to 1952. She was also on the federation's international board of directors. It was an era when most professional women, such as doctors and lawyers, weren't permitted to join associations such as the bar and Canadian Medical Association. So the federation was an especially important voice for women, Bennett said. In the late 1940s, Ahern came to Ottawa with a delegation to lobby for equal pay for women. Her volunteer work was extensive. She headed the provincial Catholic Women's League and the Liberal Women's Association, as well as serving as president of the Halifax City and County Council. She was also active with the Red Cross and the Children's Aid Society in Nova Scotia, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire and Zonta Club International. She was a member of the board of governors of Mount St. Vincent University. Despite her career, and involvement in national and provincial issues affecting women, she didn't consider herself a feminist, Bennett said. ''She was very feminine, always beautifully dressed and always quietly going about her work.'' A staunch Roman Catholic, she acted out her beliefs. ''My mother felt that you have a responsibility. You have a duty to serve your community, your family, your church.'' A service was scheduled for today at 11 a.m. at Annunciation of the Lord Church, 2414 Ogilvie Rd., Gloucester.

Coroner Who Made Headlines
Mr. Ahern: several of his findings led to far-reaching changes
A man who inquired into some of the State's most sensational criminal cases, Mr. Kevin Barry Ahern, has died at the age of 72. Appointed the State's first full-time coroner in 1974, Mr. Ahern conducted inquests into “The Family” series of murders from 1979 to 1983 and the drowning of university lecturer Mr. George Duncan, whose body was found in the River Torrens in 1972. And he conducted inquests into the Ash Wednesday bushfire tragedies of 1983.

When Mr. Ahern was appointed, his geographical jurisdiction was limited to the metropolitan area and two narrow corridors of land to Gawler in the north and Christies Beach in the south. But eventually his jurisdiction encompassed the entire State. After suffering a stroke, Mr. Ahern retired in 1993 as one of the State's longest-serving coroners.

Mr. Ahern served two years in the Royal Australian Air Force in England during World War II, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. On returning to Australia he graduated from university with a law degree. During his time as coroner, Mr. Ahern made several key determinations, some of which led to far-reaching changes, including the compulsory use of seat belts.

One of Mr. Ahern's sons, David, 37, said his father “really loved his job and would always be working very long hours”. “Despite the hours, though, he was always there for his family, and he was an excellent father. He loved his cricket and footy and was a loyal fan of North Adelaide and the Crows,”

Mr. Ahern is survived by his widow Margaret and children John, Michael, Christine, David, Stephen and Philip. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul of the Cross church at 11 a.m. today.

Janet M. (Usiatynski) O'Hern
JANET O'HERN, 67 HER CONCERN 'ALWAYS FOR OTHER PERSON FIRST'
Knowing that death was near, Janet M. O'Hern's family gathered in her East Syracuse home earlier this week. Though she was weak and barely able to breathe, Mrs. O'Hern spoke separately with each of her children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, sisters and brothers, sharing her final thoughts. "She had something to say to each of us," said Gail E. Rizzo, one of Mrs. O'Hern's daughters. "She told me that I should make peace with my sister, that it's a long life and that some things are easier to do than others." On Monday afternoon, Mrs. O'Hern died in East Syracuse, the community she called home all her life. She was 67.

Mrs. O'Hern was born in Fremont, the youngest of 10 children born to Polish immigrants Anthony and Karolina Gabruk Usiatynski. She grew up on her parent's farm and remained in the area all her life. Mrs. O'Hern and her husband, Garry E., met on a hayride while they were students at the former East Syracuse High School; he was two years her senior. They married two years later, on Oct. 14, 1950. During the next 15 years, the O'Herns had 10 children. "In the '50s and '60s, all the families were big families," Rizzo said. "Typical families in our neighborhood had four or five children and there were very few who had just one or two children." Mr. O'Hern died in 1988.

Mrs. O'Hern retired in 1994 after working for the Marriott hotel chain, Bristol Myers-Squibb and Agway. She belonged to East Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary Post 359. Mrs. O'Hern suffered from a weak heart all her life, and when she was 50 she had open heart surgery in which doctors gave her an artificial aorta. A few years ago, she caught a rare virus which severely damaged the muscles of her heart. "A heart transplant was the only thing doctors could do, because they couldn't do anything to repair her own heart," Rizzo said. Mrs. O'Hern never put herself on a transplant list. "I really believe she felt that an (available) heart should go to someone younger, who hadn't lived as long as she had," her daughter said. "She felt they were more deserving."

Mrs. O'Hern was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and cards. In autumn, she gathered leaves to make collages. "She'd take walks to search for the perfect leaf ... and keep her nose to the ground to find it," Rizzo said. Despite her pain, Mrs. O'Hern never complained, her daughter said. "If anyone asked her how she was doing, she'd say 'fine' and then she'd want to know how you were doing. She never thought of herself; it was always the other person first."

Surviving are seven sons, Garry E. and James M., both of Huntington Beach, Calif., Daniel C. of Everett, Wash., Patrick A., William R. and Martin S., all of East Syracuse, and Brian R. of Canastota; three daughters, Gail E. Rizzo of Italy, Jean M. Moore of East Syracuse and Mary E. Armstrong of Syracuse; two brothers, John J. Usiatynski of East Syracuse and Walter F. Usiatynski of Cicero; two sisters, Helen A. Marko of Cicero and Felicia A. Galuski of East Syracuse; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services are 9 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Church, Kinne Street, East Syracuse. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Forani & Cline Funeral Home, 206 Kinne St., East Syracuse. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Central New York, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool 13088.

Torrie was preceded in death by her husbands, Lex Connelly and Ken Curtis. She is survived by her son, William of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter, Danny of Weatherford, TX; eight grandchildren; sisters, Doris Gillespie Hall of Salt Lake City, UT; Charlotte Ahern Jensen; Kris Ahern Livreri and Julie Frank, all of Las Vegas, NV.
