Note* Etienne Martin 8. ETIENNE MARTIN & MARIE-JEANNE COMEAU.
Explanatory Notes S.A. White
i. The deposition at Belle- ile-en-Mer of Louis Courtin, husband of Marie-
Josephe a Michel a Etienne Martin, says that Etienne Martin's parents
were Rene Martin and Marguerite Landry. It would appear that Marie-
Josephe had been misinfonned regarding the names of her great-
grandparents. This mistake gave birth to the erroneous idea that Etienne
Martin's father Bamabe was the son of Rene (or Robert) Martin and
Marguerite Landry.
ii. It seems that the Jean Martin who became Marie-Elisabeth Maillet's
husband was the same one who had been married to Madeleine Richard
,' for the following reasons:
a. On the list of the Acadians in New York in 1763, Jean Martin
appears right after Zacharie Richard and Isabelle Blanchard, who
were the paternal uncle and maternal aunt of Madeleine Richard, his
(first) wife, even though at the time Jean was in fact remarried to
Marie-Elisabeth Maillet.
245
b. Jean Martin, by then the widower of Marie-Elisabeth Maillet, was
listed at Champflore, in Martinique, in 1766, along with his sister
Madeleine Martin. On the same list, Fran~oise Martin, married for
the second time to Hugues Racle, and Elisabeth Martin, wife of
Pierre Lord, appear as well.
c. After 1763, Jean Martin seems to have followed the same itinerary
as Fran~ois Martin (the husband of Fran~oise Lord), by going
from New York to Martinique, first to Le Carbet in 1765 and then to
Le Mouillage by the 1780's.
d. Two of Fran~ois Martin and Fran~oise Lord's daughters were
godmothers of Jean Martin and Marie-Elisabeth Maillet's grand-
children: Marie-J osephe of J oseph- Eleonor Gonthier (son of Louise-
Robertine Martin) on July 4, 1781, and Marie-Anne of Marie-
Victoire Gallais (daughter of Victoire Martin) on September 15,
1785 (Rg Le Mouillage).1

Birth*circa 1678 He was born circa 1678 at Port Royal, Acadie.2
He was the son of Barnabe Martin and Jeanne Pelletret
Marriage*13 October 1705 Etienne Martin married Marie Jeanne Comeau, daughter of Pierre Comeau and Jeanne Bourgeois, on 13 October 1705 at Port Royal.3,4
Census*1707 Etienne Martin appeared on the census of 1707 at Port-Royal.1
