Claude Charles du Tisne
M, #1892, b. 1681, d. 15 May 1730
Story* | | Notes on Claude Charles DU TISNE from Clarence's book Claude Charles went to Canda at an early age and engaged in the fur trade, where he showed marked ability in dealing with the indian tribrs and picking up their language. In 1708 at Quebec. he married Marie Anne GAUTHIER de COMPORTE. While he was on a visit to France in May 1711, his wife, who had remained in Quebec, died. He returned to Canada and in 1713 married Louise Marguerite. A few months after marriage he obtained a trade contract from Antoine CROZAT (to whom the Crown had granted a trade monopoly in the Louisiana Territory) and, as an Ensign commanding twelve men, left Quebec in the spring of 1714 to establish a trading post on the Wabash River. However, the project was cancelled and Du Tisne and his men made their way down to Mobile. The men under Du Tisne were sent home to Canada but he remained and was promised a Lieutenancy in the Louisiana troops. Jean Baptiste LE MOYNE de BIENVILLE had established a fort, Fort St. Joseph, at the Tonicas on the Mississippi River by 15 April 1716. Du Tisne was with him, and because of his ability with Indian languages and as a negotiator, he was sent to make peace with the Natchez Indians. A fort, Fort Rosalie, was then built at Natchez. When Bienville returned to Mobile, he left Major PAILLOUX in charge, with Lieutenant Du Tisne as second in command. In September 1716 Du Tisne was directed by Bienville to leave Natchez and head up a detachment going up the Red River to help Louis JUCHEREAU de ST. DENIS to build a fort among the Natchitoches Indians. As soon as Du Tisne arrived he won over the Indians with a three-day calumet and distribution of presents, then chose a site, supervised the building of the fort, persuaded the Indians to move their village to the French Post, and remained as Commandant. Thus he and St. Denis are the founders of Natchitoches, the oldest town in present day Louisiana.
In October 1718 Bienville called Du Tisne to leave his Natchitoches command and join a convoy going to erect Fort de Chartres in the Illinois Country. From Fort de Chartres, Du Tisnes mission was to reconnoiter the area west of the great river, contact and observe the Indian tribes, and report to Bienville. He explored what is now the State of Missouri and as far as the headwaters of the Osage River. He was back at the Illinois settlements by 19 October 1719. He went to Biloxi to report personally to Bienville and on 22 August 1720 Bienville issued an order to "Sieur Du Tisne, Captain of Infantry" to depart with seven flatboats manned by ten men each to take him to New Orleans via the mouth of the Mississippi River. He continued up to Illinois with some of the flatboat cargo and brought a contingent of slaves up there for the Company of the West, and kept one for his own use. His wife, who had remained in Canada all this time, was given a permit 12 May 1721 to leave Canada and join him in Illinois. On 30 September 1722 he closed his account for Illinois with the Company of the West and left Illinois accompanied by his wife and a son by his first wife. After stopping in Natchez, they arrived in New Orleans on 29 October 1722.
On 29 January 1723 Du Tisne embarked for France to plead at Court for recognition of his Captaincy (the title given him by Bienville had been only one of courtesy) and returned to Louisiana on Le Profond which arrived 12 April 1723. On 24 September 1723 a brevet was issued in Paris naming Du Tisn6 Captain in Louisiana; another brevet gave an expectancy of Ensign to his son. On 1 October 1723 there followed an order for Du Tisne to command the Post of Illinois, but he did not go there until a year later. In April and May 1724 he attended the Superior Council in New Orleans when his Illinois account was settled. Letters of exchange amounting to 9599 livres were surrendered to him on 2 May 1724 at the final accounting. He went to Fort de Chartres some time after, for he was at Kaskaskia on 25 September 1724. The son accompanied his father to Illinois for his first military service but Madame Du Tisne remained in New Orleans. On 30 January 1725 Bienville conveyed to Du Tisne for 4000 francs a house about 32 feet long by 21 feet wide, with floors above and below, with front gallery, and kitchen of stakes covered with bark. The house was of timber, with shingle roof, and was on a lot of about 12 fathoms front by 25 deep, facing the Mississippi. At the transaction, Du Tisne, who was in Illinois, was represented by his wife and by M. ROQUET. Du Tisne left Illinois shortly thereafter and probably came to New Orleans to join his wife at the home purchased from Bienville. There is no military record of him for the next four years but he was in New Orleans in October 1727. About June 1729, the Commandant at Fort de Chartres having died, Du Tisne was sent up from New Orleans to fill the vacant command. Madame Du Tisne remained in New Orleans. Soon after arriving in Illinois Du Tisne received a gunshot wound in the cheek from the Fox Indians. He apparently recovered, but died at Fort de Chartres the following year. After his death, his widow married Michel ROSSARD in New Orleans on 13 November 1730. Claude Charles and Louise Marguerite had only one child, Marguerite Marie Louise (Ancestor 311). |

Antoine Patin
M, #1894, b. circa 1689, d. 21 January 1747
Story* | | Notes on: Antoine Patin dit Bellaire
(RN=1894). (CBL.108) Antoine's birth place has been identified as Morillon, commune of Samoens, arrondissement of Bonneville, Department of Haute Savoie, France. He was a carpenter, and he and his wife came to Louisiana in 1719 as members of the Joseph Paris du Vernay, also known as Dubuisson, concession, the very first concession in the Louisiana colony granted by John Law's Company of the West. Men were brought over to work in the Bayou Goula area and then in the area of Pointe Coupee. Antoine had to file claim before the Superior Council in 1730 and 1731 to collect arrears due him on salary account.
