Jacques Prince

M, #536, b. 1646, d. 1692/93

Story* Notes on: Jacques Prince (Le Prince)

(RN=536)
Arrived Acadia ca 1671. 169O Settled @ Pisiguit (firstgeneration).
(CBL.152, E.160) (Apr 89). Jacques was a soldier in the Loubias Company of the Carignan
Regiment which arrived in Quebec 14 Sep 1665 aboard the vessel La Justice.
This company was quartered at Trois Rivieres during the winter of 1665-1666 and the census of
1666 at that location shows Jacques as a bachelor, age 25, serving as valet for the notary
Severin Ameau. He was still at Trois Rivieres 3 Nov 1667 when he was witness to a marriage.
He was in Port Royal in 1670 when he married Marguerite, for the 1671 census there shows her as
already married. However Jacques was not listed, having apparently returned to the Quebec area.
On 15 Apr 1671 and 26 Jan 1672 he appears as witness to two marriages in Montreal.
He returned to Port Royal before 1678 for he is shown there in the census of that year with wife
and one daughter on four arpents of land and having nine heads of oxen. The census of 1686
again shows the family at Port Royal, with four children. Jacques was taken prisoner at Port
Royal in 1690 by Sir William Phipps prior to the latter's unsuccessful attack on Quebec later
that year. Jacques was apparently freed in the exchange of prisoners which took place following
Phipps' defeat. Jacques then probably moved his family to Pisiguit, where Marguerite, widow
Prince is shown in the 1693 census with five children.
Jacques and Marguerite are believed to have had six children.
The first five born at Port Royal, the last at Pisiguit.

Note* Jean Beliveau 2. JEAN BELLIVEAU & (1) JEANNE BOURG & (2) CECILE MELANSON.

Explanatory Note S.A. White
The alphabetical table of Sieur Haran shows that Jean Fougere's second
marriage took place at Port-Toulouse. At the time of this marriage, old Jean
Belliveau's family was the only Belliveau family there. It may be presumed
19

that Marie-Madeleine Belliveau was a member of his family. She had in all
likelihood been born at Port-Royal during Father Durand's captivity in
Boston, which would explain why her baptismal record is absent from the
registers. She was thus the fourth girl reported in Jean Belliveau's household
in the 1714 census.

Biographical Notes
--Aug 1695 (old style): Jean Belliveau took the oath of allegiance to the
King of England at Port-Royal; he made his mark on the document.
25 June 1701: Jean Belliveau sold a lot of land at Chignectou to Jean
Pothier.

2 Dec 1705: Three pieces of his land were expropriated for the extension of
the fort at Port-Royal.
ca 1721: He emigrated to Port-Toulouse, lIe Royale, from where he went,
in 1728, to Tracadie, lIe St-Jean. The children of his first marriage
stayed behind at Port-Royal.1

Story* Notes on: Jean Baptiste Brot

(RN=556) (CBH.68, L.172) The family was exiled to Maryland in 1755 but it is not known if
Jean Baptiste was deceased already or not. The 7 Jul 1763 census ofthe Acadians in Maryland
lists Elizabeth at Portabaco as a widow with two children as yet unmarried. Five of the
children of Jean Baptiste and Elizabeth are known, but there may have been others born between
1726 and 1739. All were born at Pisiguit.
Jean Baptiste parentage deduced from a dispensation for consanguinity in the fourth degree
granted to Joseph Terence Landry and Marie Antoinette Breau for their marriage 10 Nov 1849 at
Donaldsonville, La. The only possible reason for the impediment was relationship in the Breau
line and comes about from Jean Baptiste Breau (the groom's great grandfather) and Pierre Breau
(the bride's great grandfather) having been brothers (actually, half-brothers: Jean Baptiste--
husband of Elizabeth Henry--being from the first wife, Marie-Josephe Bourgeois, while Pierre--
husband of Marie-Josephe Dupuis--being from the second wife, Anne LeBlanc).
