Grandparents -- Stanislaus GALUS and  Martha nee KUDRON

From the time I began researching my Polish roots I knew that both my Grandfather Stanislaus GALUS and Grandmother Martha nee KUDRON came from Łęki Górne / Łęki Dolne - Leki Gorne / Leki Dolne, Poland. The source document that named their birthplaces was a copy of a transcription of their baptism/birth records from the Catholic Parish in Łęki Górne. These transcriptions were recorded in Platte County, Nebraska, and must have been used at some point to prove their date of birth.

My Grandfather, Stanislaus GALUS, was a son of Andrew and Agnes SZTORC GALUS. He was born 27 Feb 1880 in Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland. At the time of his birth this area of Poland was under Austrian rule. Stanislaus immigrated to the United States from Łęki Górne, now in Podkarpackie Province. Stanislaus and his brother, Joseph, sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on 29 August 1898, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 6 September 1898 aboard the SS Switzerland. They came immediately to the Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska area to live with their Aunt and Uncle, Andrew and Maryanna GALUS PAPROCKI. Stanislaus and Joseph must not have remained long in Nebraska, as I was unable to find an entry for either of them in the Nebraska 1900* U.S. census.

When he filed his Petition for Naturalization on 29 October 1921, Stanislaus indicated he had been living in the State of Nebraska from April 1911 until the time of his Petition.  I later found a copy of an earlier Petition that was filed in Denver, Colorado, 11 December 1908.  An online Denver city directory at Ancestry.com had Stanislaus Gallus listed in 1909.  I have yet to find Stanislaus in the 1910 U.S. census. Ultimately, I found Joseph enumerated in Platte County, Nebraska, for the 1910 census.

Great grandparents, Andrew \ Andrzej GALUS and Agnes \ Agnieszka nee SZTORC

Andrzej / Andrew and Agnieszka / Agnes SZTORC GALUS (shown in the photograph with two of their grandchildren) were both baptized in the Parish of Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne, Galicia, Austria Poland.  Andrew was a son of  Jan / Joannes Cantius GALUS and Maria Anna nee PAPROCKI.  He was born 3 Oct 1848 in house 106 Leki Gorne.  Agnes SZTORC was a daughter of Jan / Joannes SZTORC and Marianna nee TWOREK.  She was born 26 Dec 1858 in house 162 Leki Dolne.  Andrew and Agnes married on 16 Feb 1876 in the Łęki Parish. I've found fourteen children born to them. 

On the baptism records of their children Andrew's occupation was given as "hortulanus," a Latin word meaning gardener and was a term used to describe a peasant who owned a cottage and enough land for a garden but not enough land to grow field crops. In Polish records during the 19th Century a hortulanus/gardener was called an ogrodnik or a zagrodnik. 

Andrew died at age 83 on 31 Oct 1931 in house 106 Łęki Dolne, Poland; Agnes, age 80, died 25 Feb 1939, house 7 Łęki Dolne.  Besides Stanislaus and Joseph, three other sons of Andrew and Agnes: Thomas, Frank and John, also immigrated to the United States.  A sixth son, Michael, was killed in Russia during World War I.  All of my grandfather's sisters stayed in Poland. During my first trip to Poland in June 2004, I visited a first cousin of my Dad, who lives in a house located on the site where my GALUS family lived.  My cousin, Mrs. Eugenia Pękala, had a photograph of the house that previously stood on the site of her current home. Mrs. Pękala said her late husband, Bronisław, built the current home about 60 years ago.


The death records for the Village of Łęki Dolne after 1898 do not appear to have been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormon) church.  In September 2006 my cousin Paweł BANDUR visited the parish priest in Łęki Górne to find the death dates of some of our ancestors who died in Łęki Dolne.

I visited the Łęki Górne cemetery while I was in the area.  The graves in many European countries are reused after a time.  The only family graves in the cemetery are my grandaunt Maria GALUS SAS and her husband Jan SAS, and their son-in-law Bronisław PȨKALA.

Josepha / Józefa  GALUS

Josepha was born 19 Dec 1876. Her date of death was noted on her baptism record -- 10 Jan 1877.

Josephus Joannes / Józef Jan / Joseph John GALUS

Joseph was born 26 May 1878 in Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland. Joseph and my grandfather Stanislaus were both passengers on the SS Switzerland that sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, 29 August 1898, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on  6 September 1898. The ship manifest showed they were going to their uncle Jerzej (Andrew) Paprocki in Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska.

His brother Frank's obituary of 22 Jan 1957 indicated that Frank was predeceased by Joseph.


Some time ago I found an entry in the Platte County Marriages book 9 for a Joseph GOLUS and Anna OLSUFKA.  I sent for a photocopy of the record from the Platte County Courthouse, but it wasn't clear if this Joseph was my grandfather's brother.  In August 2005 I learned that St. Michael's Church in Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska, had published a book which included all parish marriages, baptisms and deaths.  Since so many of my relatives settled in this area, I ordered a copy of this publication.  The following entry for Joseph's marriage confirmed that the photocopy I had was for my granduncle:

The Charles PAPROCKI enumerated in dwelling 206, would have been Stanislaus, a son of Andrew and Maryanna GALUS PAPROCKI, and a first cousin of Joseph and my grandfather Stanislaus.  Charles/Stanislaus' wife was Anna nee ZIPPER.  Joseph and my grandfather first came to Nebraska to be with Andrew and Maryanna.

The John GOLUS enumerated with Charles PAPROCKI may be the brother of Joseph and my grandfather.  He indicates that he has filed his first papers for naturalization.  I have not yet found his Declaration of Intention.  According to his age on the census, he was born about 1884; the Łęki Górne records show he was born in 1882.

In addition to their marriage record in the St. Michael's book, I found a baptism record for a son, Leo Joseph, born to Joseph and Anna:


I found no other baptisms in the St. Michael records for children born to Joseph and Anna.  Nor did I find Joseph enumerated in Nebraska in the 1920 census.  I expanded my search for him and found that Joseph was living in Chicago, Illinois in 1920.  Looking for other Illinois records I found his World War I draft registration of 1918 in Cook County.


Subsequently I found a birth / baptism record for son Frank in the St. John Cantius Church, Chicago, IL. Frank Joseph GALUS, son of Joseph and Anna nee OLSZOWKA, was born 26 February 1914 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

For quite a while the trail was cold.  I was unsuccessful in finding Joseph and/or his family beyond the 1920 census.  In May 2010 I found an image of a birth record for a Tedor GALUS on the FamilySearch.org (Mormon Church) site.  Tedor was born 26 September 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph and Anna.  In November of the same year I was searching through various records at Ancestry.com, when I noticed an entry in the Illinois Death Index for a Leo J. GALUS.  I took a chance and purchased a copy of the Death Certificate.  It turns out this was the death record for Joseph and Anna's oldest son Leo.  According to this certificate, Leo died 6 August 1963 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at the age of 51.  He never married.  The informant named on the record was Leo's sister Anna.  Leo was buried 10 Aug 1963 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside Cook County, Illinois.

I previously mentioned that Joseph immigrated to the U.S. with my grandfather Stanislaus, arriving at the Port of Philadelphia in September of 1898.  I have yet to find Joseph in the 1900 U.S. census.  In the 1910 and 1920 censuses I noticed that Joseph put his date of immigration as 1902 and 1901, respectively.  Searching through the immigration records at Ancestry.com, I found an entry in the Border Crossings from Canada to the U.S. that caught my attention.  The S.S. Neckar sailed from Bremen, Germany, 8 February 1902, arriving at the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia in March, 1902, subsequently arriving at the Port of New York, New York.  One of the passengers listed on the manifest was Jozef GALUS, age 24, single, laborer.  His nationality was Galicy and his last residence was Lęk Dolni.  His final destination was Chicago, Illinois.  He answered "no" to the question asking if he had ever been in the U.S. before.  The relative he was going to see was a cousin, John STORZ, in Chicago, Illinois. 

Based on the age on the manifest, this Jozef was born about 1878, which is the birth year of my granduncle Joseph GALUS.  My Joseph was born in Łęki Dolne in Galicia; his mother was Agnes nee SZTORC.  It is possible that my grandfather's brother went back to Poland for a while and returned a few years later.  More speculation...more mysteries....

Update September 2016

Every once in a while I would look for additional information about Joseph and his family.  I connected with a granddaughter of Joseph through information that was on Leo Galus' death certificate.  Over time, between the two of us we put together more pieces of the puzzle.

Joseph and Anna were the parents of 5 children:  Leo Joseph, Frank Joseph, Rose M., Tedor aka Floyd William aka Florian, Anna and Clara.


Through correspondence with Anna Galus Pioli, I learned that her parents, Joseph and Anna, were buried in Michigan.  I ultimately learned that Joseph, his wife Anna, and their children Frank and Rose, were buried at St. Henry's Catholic Cemetery in Rosebush, Isabella County, Michigan.  Joseph died 3 Jan 1931 in Rosebush.  Anna died 7 Jan 1946 in Mt. Pleasant, Isabella County, Michigan.  A member of the Isabella County Genealogy Society was kind enough to go to St. Henry's Cemetery and photograph the grave stones for me.

Stanislaus and Martha KUDRON GALUS

My grandfather Stanislaus was born 27 February 1880 in Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland.  As I've previously noted, Stanislaus and his older brother Joseph immigrated from Poland in August 1898. Stanislaus and Joseph were passengers aboard the SS Switzerland, which sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, and arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in September 1898. The two brothers were going to be with their uncle Jerzej (Andrew) PAPROCKI, who married their aunt Marianna nee GALUS. So far, I have been unsuccessful in finding Stanislaus in the 1900 and 1910 U.S. censuses. According to his Declaration of Intent to become a naturalized citizen of the U.S. dated 29 October 1921, Stanislaus had been residing in the state of Nebraska since 28 April 1911.

My grandmother, Martha KUDRON, daughter of Thomas KUDRON and Ursula nee MODELSKI, immigrated to Nance County, Nebraska, arriving at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts on 20 June 1907. Martha was born 24 Mar 1891 in Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland. Martha, her parents and her siblings were members of the Ss. Peter and Paul Church at Krakow in rural Nance county, Nebraska. Stanislaus' aunt and uncle Joseph and Sophia GALUS ROSNO, were also members of the Krakow church. According to my Dad and his sisters, Stanislaus was introduced to Martha by an aunt. I am speculating that it was Stanislaus' aunt Sophia who was playing the matchmaker. Stanislaus and Martha nee KUDRON were married 31 Jan 1912 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.

Stanislaus and Martha were the parents of nine children:

Martha and Stanislaus farmed in Nance, Holt, Boone and Platte counties, before moving to Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska in the mid-1940's. My grandfather worked in the Stockyards in South Omaha. They were members of St. Francis Assisi parish in South Omaha. I grew up in this South Omaha Polish neighborhood, living next door to my grandparents. Stanislaus died 18 May 1965 at his home in Omaha. Martha died 16 Jan 1973 in Omaha. Both Martha and Stanislaus are buried in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue, Nebraska.

It appears my grandfather applied for naturalization in 1912, but his application was not granted at that time.

On the Platte County NE GenWeb site is a transcription of two newpaper articles dated 15 November 1912 and 22 November 1912 regarding naturalization applications:

Stanislaus and Martha were farming in Albion, Boone County, Nebraska, when Stanislaus filled out his World War I Draft Registation.  The date of birth he gave on the registration was 15 Mar 1882, which is not correct.  His brother John Peter, was born on that day.  Stanislaus' Petition for Naturalization also had this date of birth.


At the time of the 1920 U.S. Census, Stanislaus, Martha and their family were still living in Boone County, Nebraska.


On 28 March 1922 Stanislaus GALUS became a citizen of the United States.  He and his family were living in Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska at the time.


At the time of the 1930 U.S. census, Stanislaus and his family were farming in Monroe Township in Platte County, Nebraska.  Both the 1920 and 1930 censuses show that Stanislaus was renting the farms he was working.  My Dad once told me that Stanislaus was trying to buy the farm that he was working, when they lived in Ewing, Holt County.  According to the story, hail destroyed the crops several years in a row and Stanislaus lost the farm. 


At some point Stanislaus rented a farm that was located south of Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, between the Loup and the Platte Rivers.  My Dad showed us where this farm was, some of the buildings still exist.  Dad said that his maternal grandmother, Ursula KUDRON, lived with them for a time at this location.  Ursula died 29 Jun 1940 and her obituary indicated "After the death of Mr. Kudron in 1938, Mrs. Kudron made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Galus."  My grandmother, Mrs. Stanley GALUS of Columbus, was listed as one of the survivors.  I have several photos that were taken at this location.  One of them is a photo of Martha and my Dad in his Army uniform, with a Staff Sergeant's patch on the sleeve.  Dad was promoted to Staff Sergeant 9 Sep 1942, which gives an approximate time frame of when the photo was taken.

Yeasr ago I extracted the GALUS entries from the Omaha City Directories to get an idea of when Stanislaus and Martha moved to Omaha.  The photo of Martha and son Edmund was taken sometime after September 1942 in Columbus.  There was no Omaha directory printed for the years 1943 and 1944 due to the paper shortage during the war.  Edmund was discharged in September 1944 and gave his address as 3220 K Street in Omaha.  The 1945 directory listed a Mary GALUS living at 3220 K Street, her occupation was pkr P.F.Petersen Baking Co.  Mary is my Dad's youngest sister.  Stanislaus and Martha were not listed, nor was there an entry for my parents.  Dad's sister Mary married in May 1945.  The 1946 Omaha directory listed Laura M., stenographer at Byron Reed; Mrs. Martha, charwoman City National Bank; Stanley (Martha), laborer Cudahy, living at 3220 K Street.  Still no listing for my parents.

John Peter GALUS

John Peter GALUS was born 15 May 1882 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland. I have no other information on John, although he may have been a witness to my Grandfather's marriage in 1912. According to my Aunts, John may have gone to either Chicago or Detroit.

Frank GALUS

Frank GALUS was born 18 June 1884 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Austria Poland. Frank immigrated around 1904 and eventually settled in the Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska area; he remained single. Frank died 21 Jan 1957 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Norfolk, Nebraska. He is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska.

TARNOV -- (Special) -- Frank Galus, 72, died today at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Norfolk after a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic church. Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Duesman Funeral home in Humphrey where the body will lie in state until the hour of the service.
Mr. Glaus (sic) was born July 14, 1884* at Tarnov, Poland. Coming to the United States in 1904, he lived in Chicago for a time before coming to Nebraska. For the last 32 years he made his home with Joe Paprocki of Tarnov.
Surviving are two brothers, Tom and Stanley of Omaha, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe.

I found a 19-year-old Franciszek GALUS of Leki Dolne aboard the S. S. Karlsruhe, which sailed from Bremen, Germany on February 9, and arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland on February 24, 1905.  Franciszek was going to be with a Franciszek RIBA at Will Str. 19 in Chicago, Illinois.  I can't be sure if this is my grand uncle Frank GALUS, but several of the pieces seem to fit. 



Thomas Peter GALUS

Thomas Peter GALUS was born 1 Mar 1886 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Austria Poland. According to his Petition for Naturalization, Thomas sailed from Bremen, Germany, to New York, New York, in March 1908 on the ship Bremen. Like his brothers who immigrated before him, Thomas also went to the Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska area.

During World War I Thomas enlisted in The Polish Army in France - Haller's Army.  This army was comprized of single, Polish U.S. immigrants who enlisted to help fight for Poland's independence.  Haller's Army, also known as the Blue Army, was organized as part of the French Army.  Thomas returned after his enlistment to the United States aboard the S.S. Pocahontas, which departed from Danzig (now Gdańsk), arriving at the Port of New York on 26 July 1920.  His final destination was Columbus, Nebraska.  More information about The Polish Army in France http://www.hallersarmy.com/.

Eventually Thomas settled in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. At the age of 36 Thomas married Prakseda / Sadie MARCZYNSKI ENGLER, a widow. Their marriage took place on 21 August 1922 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Omaha. Thomas and Sadie did not have any children of their own. Sadie had two children from her marriage to Frank ENGLER: Frank and Josephine. Thomas died 4 June 1977 and is buried at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. Sadie died 18 Feb 1978 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Sadie's daughter Josephine ENGLER PANKERS is buried next to her mother.

Stephania Victoria GALUS

Stephania Victoria was born 1 November 1887 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland. Stephania's date of death is noted on her baptism record as +24/1889, but the month was not recorded. I went through the death records for the Łęki Parish and found that Stephania died on 24 May 1889.

Stephania GALUS

Six months after the death of Stephania Victoria, a daughter was born to Andreas and Marianna. She was named Stephania, born 1 December 1889. It was not unusual to use the same name of a child who had died. Stephania's marriage date was noted on her baptism record. On 7 February 1909 Stephania married Adalbert BALASA, son of Adalbert and Catharina BALASA. They were the parents of five sons: Josef, Stanislaw, Piotr, Wojciech and Jan.

Michael Andreas GALUS

Michael Andreas was born in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland, on 18 September 1893. Notes that my Mother had in her research said that Michael was killed in Russia. When my friend Grażyna visited my family in Łęki, I had her ask my cousins if they could confirm that their uncle Michael was killed in Russia. They responded, "He died in Russia in WW I. He wrote to his father that he feels that he will not see them again and that it had something to do with a politics. Keep in mind that at that times everything was political between Poland and Russia."

Sophia GALUS

Sophia was born 24 February 1895 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland. As noted by my cousins in Poland, "She married Mr. (Albert) Chrapusta who was a widower with one son, so she had a step-son. They did have one child together but it died in infancy."

Anna GALUS

Anna was born 4 June 1897 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland. Anna's baptism record noted both her date of marriage and her date of death. Anna married Antonius FORYŚ on 23 September 1926 in Łęki, Poland. She died of a heart attack on 18 July 1936. Antonius and Anna had four daughters: Maria Theresa, Zofia, Kasimiera and Stanislawa.

Maria GALUS

Maria, the youngest, was born 19 March 1903 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland. She was born four and a half years after my grandfather, Stanislaus, immigrated to the United States. To my knowledge, my grandfather never returned to Poland, and never met his youngest sister. Maria married Jan SAS on 14 September 1922 in the Łęki Parish. Jan was a son of Lucas SAS and Maria nee CURYLO. Jan and Maria were the parents of five children, all of whom are still alive. One of their daughters, Eugenia, lives in the house that is on the site of my grandfather's birth. (See the photographs near the top of the page.) In June of 2004 I was greatly blessed. I had the good fortune to travel to Poland for the first time (first of many, I hope). I met my cousin Eugenia for the first time, and her brother Marian, whom I had met many years ago, when he visited my father in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Jan died 27 October 1962; Maria died 23 December 1998. Both are buried in the family crypt in the Łęki Cemetery. Jan and Maria, and their son-in-law Bronisław Pękala, are the only family members whose graves still exist in the Parish cemetery.

Great Great Grandparents, Joannes GALUS and Marianna nee PAPROCKI

Joannes / Jan GALUS married a young widow, Marianna PAPROCKI KEPA / KĘPA, on 28 May 1841 in the Parish of Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland. Joannes was baptized in the Łęki Parish on 25 October 1818, a son of Adalbertus / Wojciech GALUS and Marianna nee KOTLARZ. Marianna PAPROCKI was born about 1819, a daughter of Adalbertus / Wojciech PAPROCKI and Hedwig nee MICEK. As of July 2005, I have not located a baptism record for her, although I have found six of her siblings in the Łęki microfilmed records. Joannes and Marianna were the parents of at least 10 children. Marianna and her first husband, Casimirus KEPA, had two children: Francisca and Joannes Nepomus.

At least three daughters of Joannes and Marianna GALUS immigrated to Nebraska in the United States before my grandfather Stanislaus and his brother Joseph made their voyage in 1898. Based on U.S. census information, it appears that Joannes and Marianna were also in Nebraska for a time. More on that later....

Leki Gorne / Leki Dolne Galicia, Austria Poland -- Records

In August 1998 I found that the birth/baptism and marriage records for Leki Gorne and Leki Dolne in Poland had been microfilmed by the Mormon Church. I ordered these films and currently have them on "permanent" loan at the Family History Center. The baptism records cover the years 1778 - 1928 for Leki Gorne and 1778 - 1904 for Leki Dolne. Up through 1833 the records for both villages were recorded in one set of books. After 1833 each of the villages had a separate ledger. The marriage records cover the years from 1785 - 1932. The microfilm numbers are 1898738 and 1898739. Death records are on film number 1898740, 1899056 and 1899057. Using the ages recorded on marriage and death records, I've been able to calculate birth years earlier than 1778, but do not have a supporting entry to confirm my calculation.

 In the process of researching my family in Łęki Górne and Łęki Dolne, I have extracted many records from the microfilms.  In December 2005 I started a webpage to share some of the transcribed records.  This is an ongoing effort.  Transcribed Records for Łęki Parish.

Since I knew their birthdates, the first thing I did was look for Stanislaus and Martha's birth/baptism records in the Leki microfilms. What a thrill I felt to see recorded there the names of my Grandparents, their parents and their grandparents. Once I found their records, I began tracking their lines back farther and farther. Of course each time a new generation is found a new female line is added. My GALUS female lines include these surnames: CISZEK, KOTLARZ, KRUPA, KUTT\KUTOWNA, MICEK, PAPROCKI, PODRAZA, NOSAL, SZTORC, TWOREK.
